It really warms my heart to hear metal musicians talk about old In Flames in that way... I don't know where the whole Melodeath scene and just Metal in general would be without the greatness of Jesper Strömblad's musicianship and sense for melody.
@nemesis86262 жыл бұрын
Yeah unfortunately in flames aren't the same without him, I still don't think they as terrible as people say but he definetly added that extra kick to there sound that there missing now
@metalkid29232 жыл бұрын
It wasn’t just Jesper in that time period. It was also Bjorn and glenn ljungström. That is what made jesters race perfect.
@philb74312 жыл бұрын
@@metalkid2923 Bjorn is credited on 3 songs from that album. Glenn too. The bulk of it was written by Jesper, as is the case for Whoracle. That's what Gepic's point was about: without Jesper, melodeath would be nowhere, just like it would be nowhere without Jonas and Anders Bjorler from ATG and Henriksson from DT

Bjorn was just as much responsible when he moved over to guitar from drums in IF, he doesn't get enough credit IMO. He has an insane sense of melody as well as being a great songwriter. You really see him shine through in Colony and Clayman. The Gothenburg scene was just a perfect storm of talent in all of these bands at a time when metal was somewhat in it's prime in the 90's. I'm stoked to see IF back to form with Foregone, I think we could see a bit of a revival.

In Flames!!! INCREDIBLE sound. I was listening to But-Rock (Creed, Nickleback...)in the early 2000s. Then I heard In Flames Trigger. Opened up my mind to real music.

Ember to Inferno wasn't even out yet when I discovered In Flames but I had the same experience as Matt, after pretty much only listening to Metallica and a handful of other bands from American metal growing up my mind was completely blown when I first heard in Flames. Dialogue with the Stars, Episode 666, and Zombie Inc were the first songs from this band that really truly grabbed me and never let go. In Flames showed me how metal THIS heavy really could have melody and it was amazing. Then I found Trivium and they brought me to even new levels of appreciation. Amazing amazing amazing
@MetalockieMusic2 жыл бұрын
In flames has always been my favorite band for the same reasons. Soundtrack to your escape was my introduction to them when I was like 15. I remember before listening to only American bands like Godsmack,Metallica,soad etc. Once I heard how they connected melody and melody like that it instantly became my favorite metal sound.. eventually it led me to trivium and I could hear the influences. Embers to inferno i believe was the first trivium album I had. But whoracle, jester race, colony and clayman i believe are the very pinnacle of this sound.

There's also a big Power Metal influence on that era of In Flames. Heck, Jesper was part of HammerFall when they started. I can hear traces of Helloween/Gamma Ray in some of the instrumental parts of this very song.

I would suggest another Gothenburg band that really captures that 90s-00s melodeath sound. They're called In Flames and they just released a sick single. If i'd listened blind to the instrumentation i'd guess halo effect was in flames and in flames halo effect.
@SpookyApparition2 жыл бұрын
a lot of the Halo Effect album sounds like modern Dark Tranquillity + some '90s-style In Flames melodies, except way more slanted toward DT's sound. I still like it, but it's not as amazing as some of the singles made me think it would be.

I’m a huge IF fan (though paradoxically one of the rare IF fans that doesn’t really like the early stuff that much compared to newer stuff like Sounds of a Playground and I, The Mask. My issue with the early stuff was never instrumentation but the all-scream vocals. Once Anders started really learning to actually sing my love for the band took off. The sing-to-scream ratio of 50:50 or so is one of the reasons I fell in love with bands like Trivium, A7X (WtF) and Killswitch. Really appreciate hearing Matt’s thoughts on IF as he is so well-versed in the metal scene and a tremendous guitar player/writer/vocalist!
