Some extra details about George's original guitar (as a Beatles gear nerd): - The offset strap button wasn't done at the factory. The guitar originally did not have a vibrato, and whoever installed the Bigsby didn't drill it out properly for the button. - Duo Jets normally have a natural mahogany back, George spray painted his guitar black at the same time John Lennon spray painted his 1958 Rickenbacker 325 black. - This was George's primary guitar, alongside his Gibson J-160E, that was used on the band's first album, Please Please Me. The album was recorded in one day on February 11, 1963.

Ten new songs needed to be recorded though, so the band came into the studio and recorded their current live set list. John Lennon had a nasty cold that day as well, you can hear him really straining his voice on the tracks where he's singing lead vocals.

This person is correct. The cherry back is better IMO on the 6128T-1957. Those were temporarily discontinued in the 2000s to release this GH version that initially sold for $10k plus, which is absurd.

The staple pickup was gibson’s attempt at a dynasonic type pickup. Les fitted a dynasonic in the neck position of one of his early goldtops. In true Les fashion, it was hidden under a diy hacked up p90 style cream cover. The story goes that Les preferred the dynasonic over a p90 in the neck position. Gibson saw this and ordered Seth lover to come up with their own version, as they couldn’t have their biggest artist playing a rival’s pickups. Therefore, the staple pickup was born. But it was so expensive to produce, it was reserved for the most expensive guitars before ultimately being replaced by the paf pickups.

Congrats David, what a beautiful Gretsch, George Harrison's music is amazing. Those Dynasonic Pickups were favored by Les Paul the man, and he actually installed a set in the early '54 Les Pauls he played. Gibson used the Dynasonic design to design/create the AlNiCo V Staple pickups. The Dynasonic and Staple pickups have an expanded range of tonal profiles. You can adjust the pickup close to the strings with the pole magnets adjusted flush for a thick full tone, or, you can lower the pickup body away from the strings and raise the individual pole magnets closer to the strings for a more single coil/acoustic tone. These pickups (Dynasonic and AlNiCo V Staple) are among my favorite types of pickups.

The Duo Jet is a prime example of an interesting Paradox from the first two years that the Beatles were performing under the name. Until at least 1962, none of the thinline, hollowbody or semihollow electric guitars and basses they played had any openings in the top. That went for George's Duo Jet model, Paul's violin bass from Hofner and John's Rickenbacker 325. It wasn't until George bought his second Gretch model, a country gentlemen, that any of their electric guitars had such an opening in the top as an f-hole.

I bought a new G6129T89 VS Silver Jet last year and, although it's a lot of money for an "import", these Japanese guitars really are beautifully made. I got mine on a whim but, considering it's a kind of Chris Cornell/Soundgarden model, I had to check it out. Those DynaSonic pickups on that Harrison model seem to take gain well - perhaps even better that the FilterTrons in mine! The middle to neck positions don't vary as much as, say, on a Gibson and it's interesting point made about the tone controls on the Harrison one. And finish-wise, I'm assuming the black is a plastic wrap like I have on the sparkle top, which comes from the Gretsch drum wrapping? Anyway, here's to more Gretsch videos on Trogly's!

Not sure if someone already mentioned it, but the strap button was offset on the back because it was stripped out and, because they weren't terribly concerned about there gear back in the day, George just drilled it into the spot above. Also, it was originally a rosewood body on the back and neck, and not black, but it was more "rock & roll" to have it a uniform all black. John followed suit later with his 325 maple later on.
@Glicksman1Ай бұрын
Nice vid. Just a few things, though. A P-90 IS a single coil pickup. The bridge you showed when you said it was a "Melita" was not so, but actually a Gretsch "Space Control Roller Bridge”, well known for being a tone-sucker and is often replaced by... whatever. The Gretsch Space Control Roller bridge, designed by Gretsch's Jimmie Webster, was introduced in 1957. It gradually replaced the Melita Syncro-Sonic bridge produced by Johnny Melita in his own workshop and was, for a while, the standard bridge on all Gretsch electric guitars. It features movable string saddles for precise intonation that are locked into place with small finger screws that stick up from the top of the bridge which can be somewhat uncomfortable for the player’s right hand. While the earliest examples of guitars with adjustable bridge saddles that allowed for individual string intonation were found on a very few early classical guitars, particularly those made by some Spanish luthiers in the 19th century, the Melita Syncro-Sonic bridge was the first mass-produced individual string intonation bridge, later imitated by Gibson’s “Tuneomatic” (ABR-1 or TOM) bridge which Ted McCarty invented and was first installed on the Gibson Super 400 in 1953. The Tuneomatic, while not the first, is, IMO, a better solution for an individual string intoneable bridge. Melita bridges, while interesting and historically accurate on many old Gretsch's are also considered by many to be tone suckers and are often replaced. The Duo-Jet’s slim headstock shape is deliberate and a more practical design for a three-on-a-side headstock than wider ones such as Gibson’s or other Gretsch’s. By positioning the tuners closer to the centre of the headstock, the horizontal string break angle behind the nut is made shallower which tends to foster better tuning stability when a string is bent and/or when using the Bigsby. The Harrison Duo-Jet’s rear strap button is offset because it was like that when George bought the guitar. It had a regular Gretsch solid tailpiece, but Ivan Heyward, an American sailor, the original owner who sold it to George, wanted a Bigsby on it instead, bought one from Gretsch and changed it himself. Apparently, the Bigsby’s centre screw was not long enough to the strap and its screw button, so he installed it off the centre as we see. Accordingly, the re-issue of George’s DJ accurately replicates this. The chambers in the DJ give it a distinct acoustic resonance which informs its electric tone so that it sounds “airy”, "open and bright" as you said, and different from a purely solid guitar, particularly the original single-cut Gibson Les Paul which ii superficially resembles. The Harrison DJ’s tone control is non-linear as was the tone control on George’s guitar. It would have been inaccurate to install a more linear tone control; however, if this is a problem it could easily be replaced with a more linear control. Also, DJs had mahogany brown-stained sides, backs and necks. The Harrison DJ is black all over reflecting the paint mod that George had done to his back in the day.

So all of Gretsch's mass production guitars are made over seas. If the model number starts with 6 (your falcons, penguins, top of the line Nashvilles and Jets) it was made Japan. Top of the line Gretsch guitars have been made in Japan since the 80s I want to say. Anyway if the model number starts with 5 (mid level) it was made in Korea. And if the model number starts with a 2 (entry level) it was made in China. They do have a USA custom shop and the lead builder is Stephen Stern. And last but not least the Gretsch family bought the company back from Baldwin in the 80s. And entered in a manufacturing and distribution deal with Fender in the early 2000s.

Unfortunately, Gretsch guitars have always been pigeonholed as country and/or rockabilly axes. In truth, Gretsches with any one of the 'Tron humbucking pickups (Filter'Tron, Super'Tron, etc.) are likely some of the most versatile sounding electric guitars out there. They will do hard rock, punk, jazz, blues and yes, country and rockabilly. (Actually, the DynaSonics on this GH model can crank out a variety of tones, too.) As proof, Bono, Neil Young and the late Malcom Young all play(ed) Gretsch. No rockabilly there!

I have one. It’s a Great guitar. Something different from my usual Gibson/Epi and my acoustics. He neck seem narrow for my liking, but that only takes a moment. My s/n# is only 8 numbers different from yours. Someday I wish you would document the Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion. I have one as well as a ‘66 Howard Roberts oval hole jazz guitar.

All in all, a lovely instrument. But $3,700? I think that's way too much. Who doesn't love George Harrison... But, still...

But, but, but . . . George's one didn't have multi-coloured string endings peeping out from under the tail-piece - oh nooooooo 🤣Despite that utter failure in authenticity I would love to have one of these, I have a terrific Japanese made Gretsch solid-body and it's quite similar in terms of 'the jangle' thru a Vox. And, of course, the Fender Rosewood Tele . . . I'm more of a Les Paul player (1968 Custom) but I'd settle with the 'Get Back' one as a my first Tele anyday! 👍😅Thanks for the great overview of this one!

I have a G5427T Electromatic Hollowbody and it's fun to use pedals with cause it get very talkative by itself then you start to play it.

Staple pickup is a Gibson copy of a DeArmon pick-up; Which, Dyna Sonic is.

Is that a .047 tone cap? It does get quite dark in the low register.

It's weird, Les Pauls are my least favourite guitar, but I absolutely love the duo jet, like, one of my dream guitars would be the Collings Julian Lage signature.

Out of all the demos I've seen on your channel, IMO you sounded the best (tonewise) on this guitar.

It sucks about the SG, David, but what a great replacement guitar is this Harrison Signature Gretsch Duo-Jet!

If he's using the same rig that he plays every other guitar through, this guitar is among the best sounding I've heard. I don't know about the rest of the guitar but those pickups are super clear.

I’ve owned two Gretsch guitars, and loved them both. BUT…not for everyone.

Maybe change the tone caps to render the tone pot more functional at least varied.

You said Melita bridge, but showed a space control bridge. The Melita is funky. You also said master tone for the master volume. lol Sorry, I'm a Gretsch guy, you're a Gibson guy. I still appreciate your video.
