Damned good analysis, comprehensive and concise. I've been using mixed sets for a while now and personally feel they give the best all-round boni but, as you pointed out, higher difficulties might change that metric somewhat. Eventually I will do some proper experimentation and figure out parry breakpoints for various enemies on different difficulties, but for now I think this analysis is a great reference for newer players, or those who just haven't experimented much, good job Mr.Waffles!

Idk if ive ever made bronze armor in a Valheim playthrough. Trolls aren't *that* hard to fight, and by the time I've gotten enough bronze left over to make armor my troll armor is pretty well-upgraded. Bronze is expensive and grindy, and the armor rating increase is small enough that I'd have to upgrade it a lot for it to outweigh being a lot slower than troll armor. At that point i might as well go on and get iron

Yeah the mix is the way to go, Also one point is by the time you can make level 4 troll armor you will need iron and Obsidian for the workbench. Something to consider with both troll and bronze is that by the time you get to about level 3 you most likely are in the swamps and can work on root armor (very OP). In my opinion I would stick with troll level 3 with bronze helm and then go for root. Just my 2 cent. Thanks , And as always good stuff.

Hey there ! I agree with the Conclusion honestly and I think you are correct in it. Just one thing I managed to see as a sort of "contradiction" is that you mentioned if you were playing on a higher difficulty or no death that you'd have to fight dangerous trolls and such. However I feel like that does no take into account that for Bronze. You would have to go in to get surtling cores first. Though experience differs for each of us. As trolls are only usually in singular doses you can handle them a lot easier than when the dungeon decides to give you multiple skeleton elites. Which I feel like contradicts the "its safer to get bronze than troll hide" A part from that. Great video !

Yeah fenris set is definitely the superior option but quite a bit more difficult to get.
@xantishayde-walker459310 ай бұрын
Great video. Haven't even gotten thru it yet. Still, you've done a great comparison here. I'd like to say, you don't have to choose one or the other. I know there are at least some people who mix and match pieces. That's a valid strategy. Just use to Troll Hide for the chest and legs so you don't loose you movement speed and just use the Bronze helmet for extra noggin protection. What I personally do is, for starters, I make sure I have Portal mats on me and a spare portal, preferably with no name for quick escapes. Secondly I wear my Troll Hide full set and have Eikthyr for increased Stamina. Then, when I find something interesting or useful, or my bags fill up from being the equivalent of a Loot Goblin who is picking up everything not nailed down and coming back with a hammer to take out the nails, I plunk down my Portal, take home everything but the Metal, drop it in my drop chest(s), then come back. If I find a dungeon, spawner, village, etc I want to clear out or get rid of, I portal home, put on my Bronze Armor and get ready to rumble. When I'm done and I want to explore more, I go home, switch back to the Troll Hide, portal back to where I left off and keep on trucking, either until I'm done or I need to fight or drop off my sweet, shiny loot again. Edit 1: Removed comma for clarity. Edit 2: Apparently Waffles mixes it up. Sounds a lot easier than Portaling all the time, yet that only matters if you're a Loot Goblin, like me. If you are, the Portal strat is also viable. Just depends on what you like. Cheers!
@WafflesGamesProbably10 ай бұрын
Hahaha loot goblin!! I love it! Very solid advice here. Yeah mixing it up is probably the most efficient, but it all depends on what's going on and how one likes to play!

@sera728410 ай бұрын
I prefer troll armor, no need for mining, bronze, tin, forge, furnaces, wood for coal, cart to haul all those metals. Just kill some trolls and skeletons, then you will have a set that has no movement speed penalty, no need to haul metals, has set bonus (15+ sneak). I usually accompany with my troll armor to the plains (where it's about to retire) and prepare to make padded set. So i can save all that bronze for other crafting recipes.
@WafflesGamesProbably10 ай бұрын
Damn troll armor in the plains...that sounds like a rough time.
@Marwington10 ай бұрын
The reason why I always go troll vs bronze is honesty weight and diminishing returns. Killing trolls is rather easy 1v1 after you get a hang of it and get a piercing weapon (if you get an abyssal razor, it's a joke honestly), so I won't even mention that. The way the damage reduction is calculated makes armour less useful against lower damage enemies (meaning if you have an enemy that deals 12 dmg or less you get diminishing returns from even base bronze armour), which is most of the meadows and black forest, excluding trolls. So unless you're struggling against trolls, full troll is good enough, mix and matching probably being best option if you REALLY wanna have that extra less dmg, for example when learning new enemies. In general, early on the better food does the heavy lifting.
@WafflesGamesProbably10 ай бұрын
Yeah that makes sense. Food is definitely very important. And trolls aren't THAT difficult. Most of the time.

I played this game last year and went the bronze route at first, a lot of mining. I came back to game recently and went with troll armor, it was much easier to get. I still got bronze, smelting for pick/axe and harvester/nails for boat etc, and then kited trolls with bow when ever I cam across them. It was no real effort and ended up with full troll set with tunic/pants/helmet at level 2. I also use skeleton shield+spear which is great for tanking. Shield knockback+spear 2 is easy killing for most mobs (skele tombs etc), and unequip shield when/if running for speed, swapping to bow if kiting trolls etc. Maybe its playstyle, but for me the large shield+X gives more than enough armour so that bronze is overkill, along with the constant speed reduction.
@WafflesGamesProbably9 ай бұрын
I have still never found much love for any of the tower shields. But hey maybe this is what I need to try them out and give them a real shot! Thanks for the comment!
@ceebotf29 ай бұрын
@@WafflesGamesProbably Yeah you can just equip/unequip for tank or mobility. It blocks significant damage and the push back is great with spear right click, can't miss, and done in the right way it instantly picks it back up.

Nice armor review. Comprehensive. Hybrid for me - bronze helmet with troll hide shirt and pants. No speed penalty, with increased armor protection compared to troll armor alone. Also allows leveling up the troll armor faster. Speed also includes backing up with a shield equiped. Heavy armor often won't allow you to backup out of reach of an enemy. Normal speed often gives you that option.

I see what you mean. Backing up instead of just blocking or taking the hit is a relatively new concept for me! Haha

When I first started playing this game, I was heavy armor, all the way. But for a while now, I have been a convert to the light armor camp. On subsequent playthroughs, I feel much more confident with troll armor, though I will add that troll armor in the mountains is not for the faint of heart. Also, this lets me use all my bronze for my favorite thing: Weapons! You should do a vid on the viability of fully upgraded bronze weapons. I was actually surprised by how much damage a fully upgraded bronze spear can do, which of course, makes it easier to acquire more troll hide.

tbh i agree with your conclusions but sneak when levelled can be amazing, especially for ranged attacks. being able to get a sneak attack x3 shot with a bow, go back into stealth and actually lose aggro on a creature cannot be understated. you can 2 shot some big enemies with a second sneak attack (depending on bow quality). i still tend to use the troll set for corpse recovery later in the game, as being able to sneak up on your corpse to recover your stuff that's next to a fuling camp can be very useful.
@WafflesGamesProbably10 ай бұрын
Hey maybe sneak is better than I feel it is and I just haven't played with it enough. I haven't found it to be too effective for really much at all but maybe I'm not leveled enough or just using it wrong
@SoaringDrake9 ай бұрын
I have run with both full bronze and full troll armor in the swamp. I had fewer deaths with troll armor. You are more mobile and can escape better in troll armor. Due to the wet debuff in the swamp, your mobility is already reduced by low stamina regeneration. You also draw less aggro from enemies. The clanking bronze armor draws enemies from further away. Killing trolls with ranged bow attacks is much safer in troll armor as you run much faster.
