@Lauren_2104 жыл бұрын
@TearingMeApartLisa As much as I hate Illumination, at least I already know that their work is typically mediocre and forgettable fluff, so I don't really bother with their work and wouldn't be surprised by their movies being crap. With Dreamworks, it's like they end up betraying my trust half the time because on the one hand, they can make amazing and passionate projects like The Prince of Egypt, the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, the Kung Fu Panda movies, Spirit, and Rise of the Guardians but on the other hand, they turn up either mediocre movies like Madagascar 3 or absolute shit like Trolls, Shark Tale, or Boss Baby. It's like they can't choose to be passionate as much as they should be able to and I have to be extremely careful when watching their library. Pixar are not perfect everytime, but they do at least care about the movies they make and they are more consistent with their film quality than Dreamworks has ever been and if they don't improve their quality consistency, they won't ever reach the levels of Pixar, Disney, Laika, or even Studio Ghibli.
@Lauren_2104 жыл бұрын
@TearingMeApartLisa That wasn't me saying that Illumination is better because believe me, they're far worse imo. Dreamworks does take risks and I like that, but my point is that if Dreamworks does have the creativity, passion, and capability of putting emotion and good writing into their works, then why can't they do that on a more consistent basis? Why do they decide to do the bare minimum and pander to little kids half the time when they have shown that they're more than able to make their films for everyone like some of their good movies I listed?

I’ll admit, when I first saw this movie and Branch said “Singing killed my grandma, okay?!” I laughed because it was just random and came out of nowhere. It would have been better if there was some buildup to it instead of just randomly throwing that line in at what should’ve been an emotional moment. It was as if the directors were like: Director 1: “oh we need an emotional backstory for this character!” Director 2: “What about killing off his parents?” Director 1: “No, Disney already do too much of that.” Director 2: “Okay. What about killing off his grandma instead?” Director 1: “Eh f**k it. Just put it in and we’ll call it a day.”

Honestly I felt like it did build up to that. Clearly he'd suffered something traumatic to make him so paranoid about singing and partying. Losing his grandmother to singing made complete sense. @briemcclose90464 жыл бұрын
@Caleb Mayfield Yes, Creek was her crush. I am unsure if Creek returned her feelings, but according to the series, Creek considered Poppy his friend. There is a speculation with one scene in the film, when Creek betrayed them, that he expressed very passionately to Poppy that "he was doing this for her," while holding her cheek and gazing at her in a look that meant he considered her more than just a friend. Creek's feelings are a mystery whether he truly loved Poppy or was just with her because she was a princess ( which came with perks) still remains unknown. We do know naturally that Branch truly loves her and puts his life on the line for Poppy, something Creek never did.

I busted out laughing at the whole “singing killed my grandma!” When I first saw this. Not because of the tone difference, but because it’s SO cliched, I couldn’t believe they went with that. It reminded me of the Robot Chicken skit where Bruce Willis played a cop who had to team with a pair of pants to solve a crime, but they didn’t get along at first because, and I quote, “a pair of pants killed my uncle!” It’s so cliche that it’s literally a joke now, but the fact they did it and did it seriously made me laugh at the absurdity.

Before I watch the review I want to say: The movie is is no way ground-breaking. I think there was one original song? The music they did use was relevant for it's particular scene, and not a hodge-podge of "2016's Most Popular". As an artist though, the visuals are STELLAR. I love the textures in the Troll's forest and the grim grime in in the Burgen's town. Is it cute and fun? Yes! Was it visually interesting? YES! Was is ground breaking? No. It's a good "feel good" movie.

As a former film design student, I wholeheartedly agree with the charming animation, but I'm not sure what you mean by 'relevant for it's particular scene'. Is there even a music scene for children? It kinda hurts me physically to see good songs pushed through a pop filter to make a quick buck off some kids, which makes the emotional dissonance in some scenes simply jarring.
@iSkeleton4 жыл бұрын
@@Ananasbringer By "relevant for it's particular scene" I meant that each song suits it's particular scene very well. The remix of "Move Your Feet" / "D.A.N.C.E." / "It's a Sunshine Day" perfectly encapsulates the fun and care-free nature of the Trolls. "True Colors" suited the "reawakening" of Poppy's colors and an adorable little love song for Branch. The music was wisely chosen, not a hot-mess of 2016's "greatest hits", which is something Illumination would make bank off of but I'm glad Dreamworks chose music relevant to each scene.

The one we've been following in the first movie are the pop trolls. Some of the other tribes have abnormal anatomy. The techno trolls look like sea angels (the mollusks) and the country western trolls seem to be centaurs.

One thing to also consider: The sequel apparently has the infinity strings. so there’s that to worry about. And while Branch is portrayed in the beginning as paranoid in the beginning it’s more that he knows that if they make too much noise they’ll be caught, which is what happens. There were a few jokes in it that I did find myself laughing at mostly involving Branch being (justifiably) angry at somebody. And I will not get over the dark humor that goes on in the “get up again” song.

The movie starts off with "we get eaten by Bergens" so gonna have to disagree with the whole "dark elements out of nowhere" thoughts. I'm not saying the movie's super complex I mean I kind of feel like it could potentially be seen as a "who needs Xanax have you tried just being happy" message but for the most part it's enjoyable. It was amusing and clearly the "traveling together so must be a couple by the end" trope was there. Seriously most movies where two opposites attract characters have less development than they did. They at least made her take shit more seriously and him take stuff less seriously both finding a happy middle ground. How many other movies are just "boom now they're a couple" I'll be the first to admit that some of the movies I like are considered high end art and others are considered trash. I think they're all just good movies.
@tisvana184 жыл бұрын
Okay so my daughter is a toddler and thus I am somewhat of an expert on Trolls now, having seen the movie hundreds of times and all 7 seasons of the show at least as much. Branch and Poppy are NOT a couple by the end of the movie, in fact it’s a plot point in the sequel. When he says “That’s why I love you” she took it platonically. (At least my head canon is that afterwards she lightly shot him down since they’re definitely not a couple in the series or at the beginning of the sequel, and in fact they’re barely really friends. Poppy is an asshole to Branch on many occasions and I think he could do much better than her borderline emotional abuse.) Also please save me I have spent way too much time thinking about Trolls.

It's the reason Preppers are so paranoid about their neighbors. They know for an indisputable fact that as soon as the economy collapses or there's real danger out there, and they're the only ones with security and food, everyone who knows about it will descend like rabid animals. I mean really, if your kids were about to starve to death and you knew the guy next door had food and wasn't sharing, you'd be a monster _not_ to try and get it from him. So you'd have to become a lesser monster and fight the guy for it. Desperation isn't some myth believed by mean, selfish people. It's the very real consequence of disaster. Poppy is who everyone will become if the economy truly collapses because of this pandemic. Except Poppy's the main character in a movie, so she saves the day in 2 hours and every decision she made gets justified. In real life, sabotaging or forcibly sharing someone's wisely, painstakingly prepared survival plan is a horrible thing to do that will get you _all_ killed, because instead of the wise one outlasting the years of catastrophe, both the wise _and_ the foolish will make it halfway and then die.

My friend joined me for this one and honestly, we both had a great time. It's not groundbreaking, except I would say some of the animation scenes, but it just connected really well. Think what really sold me was Poppy during "Get Back Up Again." I've always wanted an adventure song where the adventurer is facing actual danger and threats, so seeing her go through all that and still smile just cracks me up. Plus, her and Branch are such obvious opposites that it's fun seeing them play off each other. Even my coworker and her kids enjoy the movie and were legit excited about Trolls 2. I agree. That is such a poor message to send out to kids and one that would piss off people who deal with depression. You can't just say "Stop being so depressed!" because it doesn't work like that. Inside Out is much smarter movie that teaches people that it's not healthy to be just happy all the time and that you need sadness as well as the other emotions to fully function as a human being. It teaches kids that it's okay to feel sad and that emotion can be helpful in situations that's called for.

@@Swiftest_sketches I took the message less literally as in, "you can't consume your way to true happiness." In western society, a lot of people try to buy happiness by spending money on luxuries. Those often give you a quick rush of happiness but it quickly fades. I think the movie was trying to say, "external things don't give you long term happiness. You need interpersonal relationships and self satisfaction for that."

This is nitpicky and not something Doug would necessarily know without reading the synopsis for the sequel, but Branch and Poppy don't actually end up as a couple in this one. It's hinted at (I personally didn't even catch it the first time), but doesn't become an actual plot point until World Tour.

May Page which is such a cop out. Sure true relationships are a slow burn and this film more shows the beginning of one than a resolution but to say there was nothing between them feels like a retcon.

Even then World Tour was just resolving some issues they had in their friendship before Branch could reveal that he liked Poppy.

16:19 They actually address that in the second movie. Its funny how NC brought that up.

I guess whenever he reviews world tour he can bring that up.

I’m going to be honest when I read sometimes I zone out and can’t hear anything, and before I know it an hour has past. So Branch getting lost in the music is kind of believable
