Last Story: At this point, I would sit back, look at the DM, who is probably drooling with joy because of his ‘clever plot twist’, and then calmly say: ‘None of this affects me. Whether the paladin loses his oath or I lose my friends and family - it doesn't pull me into your story because I didn't make a mistake. It wasn't me who made the wrong decisions, it was you who let us make the actions that led to this point. It wasn't us who messed it up, it was you who forced us to mess it up by not giving us the opportunity to prevent it. ...therefore: nope, doesn't affect me emotionally.’ If the DM is worth even a speck of powder, then that'll bruise his ego as the storyteller and he'll think about whether he can do better than railroading. ...and if not, as always: no DnD is better than bad DnD. And after that he can start writing a book, because that makes more sense than if real players are involved.
@jampine82682 ай бұрын
Also his "Twists" are visible a mile off, he wants them to team up with a guy who's blockading a port of presumably innocents, has proven ties to a villain, and further ties to a possible villain? And then instantly starts asking for malicious actions like blood pacts? If the DM wrote a murder mystery, the murder would probably be standing in the room covered in blood still holding the murder weapon, whilst the narrator is like "oooooohh, whooooo could it beeeeeee, it could be anyonneeeeeeeee?"

On the last story, the GM may have the most experience of the group, but that doesn't mean he has experience being a good GM. The player came from a history of thrust upon betrayals and the GM does not accept their lore reasoning of being suspicious. Given the narrative, "Jake" is sure to betray the party. I also dislike the GM making ingame threats to OP with "Oh, I'm going to kill of "some" of your friends and family now...". To me, all actions from the GM looks like red flag behaviour and the group is better off leaving that GM behind. It is my opinion that OP should take the rest of the group and build a new campaign. Maybe even try the GM role in that.

@FRALLE22 ай бұрын
I have my own little Warhammer Fantasy mild-horror story: I have a friend who really wants to DM more, and the only people he has to play with are my boyfriend & I. But he's very, very railroady - not to the point where he's impossible to play with, there's a lot who's enjoyed playing with him in the past, he's just too railroady for my personal taste. So, the bf and I tried to figure out what to do, so he could get to DM and we could enjoy it. He really likes nobles, heritage-stuff & dwarves. So we figured we'd tailor our backstories to that, and then pitch it to him. What we came up with was that we were a pair of dwarves whose kingdom had been overrun by orks, and we were now out to make allies to gather up an army to take it back & kill all of those orks. The bf was my bodyguard, and I was the lost queen, cuz that way there could be arranged marriages & children etc. When we pitched it, the DM absolutely loved it! And when the day finally came to play ..... ... .... He informed us we'd be running around with a grudge collector (basically dwarven debt collector), and that that was what we would be doing. Whenever my dwarven queen tried to initiate politics talks with other dwarves, they would look very oddly at her, and the DM would just kinda blow it off, and then talk about the next grudge we needed to collect :/
@jampine82682 ай бұрын
@FRALLE2 like many other people said, if the DM wants to railroad thst hard, just write a book. And then if no one reads your book, maybe you're a bad writer? Also isn't like 100% of the fun in Dwarves grudges them "repaying" them? It seems like has a hyperfixation on the mundane aspect of WH:F.

That last DM isn't the witty, clever guy he thinks he is. People like him remind me that "Veteran" doesn't necessarily imply skill. Going all offer-you-can't-refuse on people doesn't say you're an especially cunning sort. Where's the trickery? Is forcing people into situations really the best he can do? The players are not making decisions they can actually regret, since they have no control in this game. They are just along for the ride.

@darby23142 ай бұрын
Last story: if a veteran DM is running for a full table of brand new players, this is usually a red flag. While there are exceptions like running for a group at a game shop, or a Dad running a campaign for kid and their friends. This is likely a sign that the DM can't get experienced players to play in their game due to a bad reputation. Or even worse, they're trying to use the game to 'write a book'.

Massive Railroad Story. There is always more than one way to the top of the mountain. Many places to start from, a few good ways to go up, but only at the very last leg of the journey is there truly only one way. And that is because of all the choices the players made along that journey lead to that path.

That last story...horrible execution. That could have been a great storytelling of the heroes fighting an uphill battle but when the characters realizing that thr BBEG has a lot of agents, the DM forces the players to make bad decisions and punish them. I would of just left. I can play a video game like Bloodborn or Dark Souls. At least I have a better chance to succeed than that DM's game.
@justinmargerum25592 ай бұрын
Massive Railroad: Forcing players to cooperate and punishing them for doing so? It's not "paranoid" when a player's character is betrayed by NPCs 100% of the time and only ever punishes trust. At this point, the DM is demanding trust he's already repeatedly squandered both in and out of the game. It's only going to get worse, so OP should cut losses and bail.

The last story was very similar to me. So my version of railroading is I create a few different options, and the players pick one or another. Don’t care which. Unfortunately they all seem to need accomplishing… so maybe that’s bad. I’m new enough so I’m learning still. But I’ve done the “this is what I want so you’ll do it” thing. It was during a ghost town moment. I had a particular outcome I wanted, and until it happened nothing changed. Now that’s bad dm behaviour, and I outright apologized after I realized what I’d done. This dm seems to be doing that but without apology. I don’t like that.

When will people learn. The DM/GM is a player in the game too. TTRPGs are not about defeating the DM or the Dm defeating the players. It is much like a football game not being about defeating the officials and the announcers. As for the second story, that player only has one story in him, and it is a pretty crappy one for a cooperative game. His inevitable and very stupid betrayal in both instances is sad, annoying and frustrating and if he keeps pulling that crap, he'll run out of tables fast.

Bard might be a problem player, but Bard might just be a more pro-acrtive, acting instead of waiting for others to react. In the game I am currently playing in, my Drop Trooper is the highest ranking soldier, but a reluctant leader. What he is is Curious and pro-active. The GM never has to ask what I am doing as I push the action in the direction that my character wants if no one else is actively doing anything. If the other players don't like it... Well they have already been told to be pro-active by the GM. In this case, the other players might need to just be more pro-active to for stall Bard in the 1st place.

They came across as somewhat pretentious and a little too into their own narrative. But I suppose it just comes down to the players weren’t looking to play the kind of game the DM presented them with.
