Made one of these mutes for my Besson Sovereign 955 Baritone horn. I needed a practice mute, “long story short”: works amazingly well. With a bit of tinkering I got it to actually play in tune, some manufactured practice mutes can’t even do that. Also being home made you can adjust the back pressure by cutting a small triangle out of the corner of the cardboard top. Increases the decibels only slightly but makes it so much more free blowing. You can alway slap painters tape over the cut if you need to play whisper quiet again. Fantastic video! You saved me from missing my practice time.

Hi Matthew - so glad this helped you and I love that you were tinkering/adjusting to make the mute fit your needs. The whole intent of the video was to help students be able to practice when volume of sound would otherwise prevent them from playing. This makes my day!! Please share the video with friends (or enemies) who may benefit. :-)

Definitely will share this video with anyone I know who is in need of a practice mute. Thanks again

You are more than welcome.... knowing that there are students who have viewed and made these mutes makes me happy!

Coming from the trumpet mute video, it's marked as for children so I couldn't comment there. Just wanted to say thank you!❤

Thank you for your wonderful good will, but I made the mute for my baritone horn just as you described--and it mutes the sound so little as to be practically useless.

Good idea, thanks for sharing. The Baritone mute are very expensive, and making one on your own sounds very economical.

What about just loosely tossing a towel over or into the bell on the euphonium? How would that work out?

Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! I have heard that water bottles work as well, but have not had a chance to try it...

Hi. I made the Baritone mute and it has saved me around £70 (UK), but it does alter the tuning quite a lot for some notes. Should I move it slightly back with larger spacers.? ( out of the bell mouth)
@jefferyjacox84442 жыл бұрын
I have not experimented a lot with the baritone mutes in particular, but yes, in genereral the placement and size of the spacers really affects the amount and quality of sound produced. I would be glad to know if you did experiement a bit and how that turned out for you!

Funny how they changed the shape of the renuzit air freshner that had that gel stuff inside the conical 'egg' like shell. I bet mute companies lost a ton of money when people started bying these, throwing away the scented gel and making trumpet mutes.
