One of those cooling towers blew down in the wind in the 70s? took 20 years to build that station Taylor Woodrow main contractors ,Higgs and Hill Yorkshire Henebique done the towers, and Tilesmen built the chimney a bit of interest for anyone in the construction industry !

I can remember a young lad starting on the cooling towers , it was all barrow work and as he tipped the concrete into the shutter, whatever happened he went over the top with the barrow , he'd only just started that morning .

It was the 80s, my dad owned a car sales place down the road and I remember it as a kid, they rebuilt it and if you look it’s always been a lighter shade! I reckon it was 84 or 85, it came down in high winds.

The village is Cuerdley Cross, not Sankey - I live about a mile away. It's known locally as the 8 towers, and there's a pub of that name up towards Widnes nearby. One of the cooling towers collapsed during a storm in 1984.

It was probably the highlight of their week. One of those cooling towers blew down in heavy wind in the 80s. It's replacement is a slightly different shade.

I live very near here. And in the early 90’s I woke up in the early hours for a glass of water. I looked out my kitchen window and the sky was SULPHOROUS YELLOW. The next morning, all of our cars were dusted in a yellow substance, sticky and powdery. We went there to ask for a meeting with the top people, and were dismissed and told to leave , with the threat of police action. (We were frightened by that, back then) So, too afraid to pursue the matter...FEAR OF REPRISAL.

I would suggest that their land boundary may be in keeping with the fence line at the edge of the road, and the inlet it to allow vehicles to queue, not causing traffic restrictions on the highway.

The moment you drive into that road it is owned by SSE I worked at Fiddlers Ferry in 2006-2008 on the FGD plant and stripping out the asbestos…The place is absolutely riddled in it which is an extremely dangerous risk if you venture in there whilst it’s being decommissioned…..I do think they were being power tripping arseholes that you can’t take photos but they are right that land is private behind those gates was the security huts where you signed in when I worked there. It’s a dream for URBEX explorers but it’s also a massive death trap with deep water troughs next to the towers and if you fell in you ain’t getting out live cables and asbestos all over the place so it’s best to stay well away

0:18 Not so long ago, the plant wasn't producing a huge amount of pollution. There would have been scrubbers on the smoke stack which cut down the level of particulates. The CO2 is actually plant food, not a pollutant. The cooling towers only produce steam.

1:09 Those 'chimneys' behind the building are Cooling Towers for the Boiler Feed Water. Giant heat exchangers giving off steam. Only crime there was not using it to Central Heat homes like in New York. There's only one chimney.....the tall one in the middle of the 8 Cooling towers. 😔

I delivered coal to Fiddlers Ferry years ago and removed fire bottom ash when I was an owner driver,it’s a shame it’s now been decommissioned,I’m sure it could have been used as a back up during hard winter conditions where the grid was struggling to keep up with demand. Why it hasn’t been converted to burn waste is amazing when there is one just down the road at Runcorn,who actually owns the land it stands on ??? I wouldn’t mind betting it either belongs to or will be bought by Peel Holdings,they seem to own everything else around there including the land between the railway and Arpley tip.

Enjoying your audits Mat :) One thing I'll say though regarding things like power stations - they are hazardous places - even disused ones. Fear of unauthorised entry and then injury is the main concern believe it or not. I'm not trying to defend the his-vis power trip crew though. Kind of shocked the front gates were open too be honest.

Once a year they must close the gates, due to the, Anti Public Photographic Access Legislation. Extreamly upset, the security never warned you, about the siren, to warn the public, squirrels and other local wild life, that the gates were about to close, and were closing. Mat you were extreamly lucky, to witness, this amazing phenomenon ho ho ho.

Hi Matt ,, I have PPL & fly PA 28 (& drone) , I have checked my CAA chart for that area ,, Fiddlers Ferry pwr stn is a VRP on the chart , it is reporting point for GA aircraft for EGGP ,, outside of class D airspace of EGGP (liverpool ) if there was restriction , my CAA chart would have a red circle 2 nm , there is none circle , and you can fly a drone in the in the A1/A2 cat, below 250 g (Cap 722) I presume that sign is a policy not CAA ruling under CAP 722
