One of the reasons I watch you guys is it bring back good memories of growing up on a dairy farm. I remember every day after school it was my job to shovel out the mature from the gutter. Our dairy herd was somewhere between 15-20 cows. The good part was getting to drive the tractor to spread the mature. My day alway had a day job and it was my job to get the hay down along with corn silage and straw for bedding. The best part of the day was going in for supper after the chores where done. My mother was a wonderful cook and always fed us really great. I share do miss her cooking.

When you take good care of your cattle and treat them as well as you do, then things like leaving a gate open are not a catastrophe. They have been taken excellent care of and don't take of for parts unknown. I have known people who yell and holler and abuse their cattle, and they end up with an all together different outcome. As usual, another excellent video !!

Patz, love them & simple to work on! I worked with my Bro-in-law on his farm. He wanted to put a barn cleaner in, I told him put in a patz- well he put in an Agway, nothing but trouble- 5 guys to clean the barn- one on each corner , & 1 out on the chute- so, I got the bright idea that if we took out the barn cleaner, it would only take 2 guys to clean barn instead of 5! each one with a shovel, and the other 3 could be doing something else, so that's what we did! Barn cleaner layed in a heap!

I got to do that too but our gutters weren't that deep, we milked in a double 6 flat parlor with stanchions. Cattle lived in an adjacent barn. Still, being the barn cleaner wasn't much for fun.

We had a Patz cleaner as well. They were very popular here in SE WI at the time - 1950's. Rarely ever broke down but always when it did, the gutters were full, as others have mentioned. It was always a good feeling when the barn was clean, straw laid down and feed laid out and ready for the evening.

Hearing your Dad talking about hitting gates reminds me when you hit a gate hinge last year when your parents were away on vacation Aaron. I'm guessing that didn't happen to you again. We have a Patz barn cleaner with the hook and eye chain. Out chute is metal on the incline and its been welded up and patched on the bottom too because it has worn through.

It helps a lot if the cattle are easy handling and a couple manage to slip out. Glad your gutter cleaner was an easy fix...amazing how many years some things will last and can be repaired via scrap pile engineering.

My barn is 140’ long, with 2 rows of stalls head to head. The barn cleaner is a Berg , and it sits on the end of a 40’ split chits stacker. I like the split chute because there is no reverse corner. Takes 20 minutes to make a full revolution
@bryanginder5903 Жыл бұрын
Usually when the barn cleaner broke it was terribly cold out! I'm fortunate to have a manure pit to pump everything into, just flip three switches and let it clean and pump out, o but it would brake down also!

Our barn was set up a little different. We only had 20 stanchions. The cows faced each other. Ten to a side. Mangers with an area where we could roll a feed cart and shovel feed to the cows. The gutters where just right to fit a ten tine silage fork down and so we pushed it out one fork full at a time. Quite a few barns in my area were set up the same way. There were a few tie stall barns built in the sixties that were set up like yours with the gutter cleaner and one of my friends dad had a big chicken barn that they converted to a tie stall barn that held 80 cows. Sadly that friend was killed when we were 11, ironically because he was asked to take the manure spreader down to the neighbors because theirs was frozen. He didn't make it.

My Dad's barn was 40 X 80 with a 40 X 40 addition and a 40 X 20 barn cleaner shed on the end of that. I can remember the bc shed going up but I was just a little guy. The barn cleaner was a Patz. The chute in the shed was wooden as I recall. I remember helping to do some repair work on two of the corner wheels, but no other breakdowns. The bc shed was also used for heifers.

When I was a young man we milked 45 head but our cows only came in the milk barn to be milked they went out another barn the rest of the time or out to pasture and we cleaned the milk barn all by hand. We used milk cans back then and they went in a water bath milk cooler and the milk was picked up every other day and some times every day.

I'm 52, grew up on the farm and it's been mine since '95. Never had a twin have twins. Can think of 7 sets of hand, may be more. 80ft long, mines 90. You milk 35-40 then? So wish my chute went out flat. Lots of run back especially in the summer. Replaced my motor couple years ago, same hp half the size. The gutter chain sprocket's getting wore good and it's coming off quite a lot. It's a patz Do the girls have their stall? I'm happy w them going on the right side, one side has slightly bigger stalls. Tie stall w 1 1/4 pipe. Left my dry cow gate unchained once and 2 got out. Neighbor called, got over there and ole Roebuck was standing in the opening keeping the others in. Called her Roadblock after that

Always enjoy your videos! How do you manage the bailing twine? That orange twine seems to last forever...even our Florida sun doesn't break it down. If ingested it raises heck with a cow's digestion, usually a "leak" between the rumin and the reticulum. Also wondering if your cows have magnets to prevent "hardware disease." Keep 'em coming (we'll watch mos' ANYthing...even including manure handling....)

Regarding George having that spare belt handy, I knew a guy that carried spare alternator, belts, tools and water pump in his car. He thought that was better than putting the new parts on as long as the old were still working.
@leahmollytheblindcatnordee3586 Жыл бұрын
My brother-in-law does that. He has a pretty ancient auto that he has fixed up and refurbished and he doesn't want to take chances, especially since a lot of the repair shops probably don't carry parts for an old car like that. Michigan

You ever have gutters fill with water at all when it rained? I remember that causing difficulties in barn cleaning. We had a trench going across the barn so we could pause the barn cleaner and let water drain

Curious why you don't use mats instead of straw where the cows kneel. Also my Uncles used a small lime spreader to put lime down, might be easier

I used to work for an implement dealer that's old badger equipment we had a farmer that packed into his chute of course it was on the northwest side of the barn the coldest place it could ever been and that was one hell of a job to get that back up on its legs and then it always seemed like the chain always broke when the gutter was completely full of manure the barn cleaners that had a cam on them and they would go forward and then back and then forward and back and the paddles would would bend and then they scoop up manure and then push it back up the chute that was an old-timer and you talk about how old that burn cleaner is
