Troubleshoot A Dead Computer PC No Power - Easily Fix A Dead PC

To troubleshoot a dead computer pc with no power, you must first start to check the electrical components coming into the PC like the main power plug and AC power cord. You should also check the front power button. If not fixed, then check the power supply unit (SMPS). In this tutorial I show you how to do all of that from basic to medium troubleshooting.

In this video tutorial I will show you the diagnostics tests to do when a computer won’t turn on.
You should follow a logical troubleshooting eliminating process. It starts with verifying the wall socket plug is working correctly. Next, check the power cord coming from the wall socket into the power supply. You can do this by either using a multi-meter such as the following:
Mastech Ac/Dc Auto/Manual Range Digital Multimeter, Ms8268, Green, Black &17.90

Alternatively you can plug the power cord into another device to test.
For this video the last test is the power supply. This can be tested in two ways. Firstly grab a different known working power supply and install into the desktop and test for operation.
If you cannot find a different PSU, then disconnect the 20+4 pin and the 4 cpu pins from the motherboard as well as any other power cables. Use athin metal wire such as a paper clip and bend into a U shape.
With the power supply switched off and unplugged, insert one end of the pin metal into a green slot and the other end into any black slot. Do not touch the pin further, plug in the power cord into the PSU and turn the switch on, if the fan spins then the power supply is working.
Please note at this stage that this test will only confirm power coming into the PSU and not correct voltage; i.e the PSU may still be damaged and not properly power the desktop.

I love you. You're the first one I saw talking about testing with spare PSU which I happened to have lying around. I did the test with the spare and the entire system worked so that immediately singled out a problem with the PSU. Turns out that I had the 24-pin connector connected on the motherboard but not the PSU itself (it's a mini SFX psu). THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Same here. Without going too in detail. I'll unplug everything, reconnect graphics card, drain the power then after that plug only the power cable in and it sometimes will boot up after trying 20 times. I keep trying til it will power back up with everything plugged in.

ok , so most pc i trouble shoot it's the power supply . but on occasion it's the case switch .!!! i order a new one i replace and its done . "A £3.87. delivered part with all the cables from far off china post later its done " but i can tell you sometimes it can be a ridiculous time searching on another pc for the part . so i got wise a few years ago and purchased a desktop button. so if your a builder or tester and do not have one of these ? get it. its cheap and so handy . just google this : 67" Desktop Computer Case Power Supply Reset HDD Button Switch £3.87.

thankyou do you know how to change all the icons and screens on linux mint to look exactly like windows 10 ? i recently watched a video on it . the bonus was it gives you all the features of linux mint without and the pitfalls of windows 10 and the excessive spying and cpu usage of the windows 10 operating system . and for gamers who use steam it is supported by a lot of games but i would say check compatability first . so for those of us with less powerful cpu core numbers or ghz such as in intel 2.4 ghz you may get a better game experience using this method . so check compatibility your steam game library and opt for a better system . granted it is a small learning curve from windows but it has a certain fredom you may not find in windows and it is pretty much a free change and an improvement on your pc knowledge base. i forgot to mention the system can be partitioned in a drive you already own . and you have the option to boot from either partition and operating system . nice video and keep up the good work .

Is your PC capable with Overclock? if so, Its a Wire Related problem.. if Not, the PC could be at extreme temperatures... But dont worry, Just leave it for a Day or so.. and the temperatures should be capable for a Nice bootup!

Hi, really appreciate that you answer comments so often, My computer shut down randomly while in use, and hasn't been able to turn on since. I've done the paperclip test to see if the PSU works; it does. When I connect the 24 pin and the 8 pin connectors to the mobo, I get no LED, but somehow the USBs work, as I can use the USBs to charge a phone. All that is currently installed is the CPU, Mobo, PSU and 2 sticks of ram. No idea what to do, Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA 970A-D3, PSU is a Corsair TX550M Thanks in advance.

I used your paperclip method, and I was able to get the fan to spin. reconnected the power supply to the PC with no luck. so I drove down to the Goodwill computer store to buy a power supply for 4.99 I figured what the heck I'll be out $5 if it doesn't work and I can't rule out that it's the power supply. and sure enough the computer is now running. I do not think that the paper clip is 100% accurate in letting you know that the power supply is bad or good. but overall your video was very educational and I learned a lot. Thank you!

This is the worst 2 weeks of my life... my pc stopped working. The fan was spinning and motherboard was working, but ports on the graphic card and the motherboard werent working... so i sent it to repair. They were fixing it and said they came to a dead end.. that they cant fix it . I got the call today saying my computer is toast and unfixable, and they voided my warranty by accident ... So im sending it to another repair center which is surposebly better and should fix it for $159 Wish me luck guys Update : i got a call that they may fix it, and may not... if they dont im on my own.
