I know this is an old video, but it helped me get my oil burner going tonight when the temperature outside hit zero. In my case, the oil pump seized. I took it apart and cleaned it when brake cleaner and pulled out the shaft and removed the rust deposit, then greased it up and put it back together. What I didn't know was the reset on the back side of the motor tripped. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

GFM, I just need to tell you your oil furnace troubleshooting steps have saved my family and I from freezing tonight and times before. I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your knowledge and time spent making these videos. I had ran my tank dry and just got oil today but could not figure out why the gun was not getting fuel. I guess I needed to purge the air out of the pump and suddenly I had pressure at the gun again . If it wasn't for your tips I would not have heat tonight.

Thanks for the video! Came home to the indoor temp at 61 and the heat was set to 63. Thermostat would click on but the furnace never fired up. Cut power at the fuse box, opened the motor to rotate the blower (which rotated smooth), pressed the red button as mentioned in the beginning, flipped the breaker, turned on thermostat, and it fired right up.

I want to THANK YOU! Oil burner locked out and did not restart. Did the normal maintenance - filter, cleaned gun, changed nozzle. Still nothing. Realized no oil to the gun, so took the whole thing apart looking for something clogged. Nothing. I thought maybe the pump was not working - flummoxed. Called for repair guy, but it's New Years Day and the guy said it was $300/hour. I decided I'd wait for Monday. Then saw that Home Depot has the pump so I figured it was worth it to try and just swap the pump. $100 and 1 day later, but this did not fix it. Then I thought maybe it's sludge in the line and the pump just can't pump it. Cleared out the entire line by disconnecting from the tank and the burner and literally blew it out with my own lungs - lots of crud, but still didn't fix the problem. Ran clear from the tank to the burner, much faster now, but still would not fire. Then I remembered you said something about the coupling and I pulled that out and looked at it more carefully. It would spin if I put it on by hand with the pump out, but then I had an "ah hah" moment. The thing was partially reamed out and would not spin the pump when it was assembled. Tried to find the part on a Sunday, but no dice. Bought some crazy glue, cut a tiny piece of plastic from the packaging and glued it in where it was supposed to have a flat edge. Banged it on from the blower motor side and reassembled. Tested it first by disconnecting the gun piping part and held a big plastic cup to that side - it spewed out oil like a champ! Reconnected everything and now the house is nice and toasty again. You need to have a special video devoted to those stupid plastic couplings. I wonder how often they fail? My instincts were right but I did not even suspect that thing.

Love your videos! I am having this issue: I have an oil fired boiler. I have to press the red reset button to start the burner. It then runs fine until it reaches the high limit temperature (180) (low is set to 120).... Then the boiler shuts off and trips the red reset button. The red light illuminates. If I press it once the burner will start again until it reaches temperature then it trips the circuit once again. I've replaced the CAD sensor, electrodes and set the electrodes with the Beckett gauge, replaced the fuel nozzle, all the filters and the Honeywell R8184 relay. The aqua stat is a very old Honeywell. Not sure of the model. Could it be the aquastat causing this problem?

Wow - great video series - i've been watching your vids, and just came across what i believe to be relevant to my situation... it's an oil boiler, not furnace, but the problem seems analogous. an elderly aunt's boiler has apparently not worked properly in years. As witnessed by me, she presses the reset button, there's an electrical hum - then she taps the side of the burner motor with a rubber mallet she keeps down there just for this purpose. Sometimes it takes a few moderate whacks, and eventually kicks over. It'll run fine until it's no longer needed (thermostat up to temp) - and then she'll repeat this process the next time she needs heat. I'm finding a tech anyway to come in and service the system, but at this point, i'm suspecting i should be ready for a new burner motor - was this a common need "back when" - because she seemed to act like it was no big deal, and she's always done it like this, lol.

Fantastic set of videos and great info on your website. Thank you very much for doing this for us DIY guys. I'm hoping you can help me out with a question though. I've gone through the diagnostics you've shown here. I ended up replacing the motor just in case as it was spinning very freely and I figured why not. After changing it though, same issue. Heater kicks on, sparks, but the fan/pump motor won't turn at all. I'm thinking the fan should kick on to pump fuel into the chamber, the ignite. Do I have that backwards? Is possibly my cad cell relay is the issue?
@grayfurnaceman10 жыл бұрын
Chris Davis Sounds like the cad cell relay may not be sending power to the motor. If you can use a voltmeter, check the wires going to the motor before it safeties out. GFM

I have a Becket that just stopped. I isolated the motor, the motor works. Since the gray box has a black (hot), white (neutral) and redish wire (switch leg) coming out of it, it must be this box. Why would i have to reset the trip on cad cell relay every few weeks now. I paid for a $200 service call for the first time it happened. I have the boiler cleaned and serviced every year. Basically they couldnt find anything wrong but replaced the nozzle anyway. They also said the arc on transformer was ok but not the best, but still they though it was sufficient. The motor wasnt tripped off, but when i hit the reset it instantly fired up. I did however notice after observing it fire up the on occasion when motor comes on it instantly fired up but sometimes it took a second or 2 to fire up. The boileris a beckett AFG. I dont want to start throwing a ton of money at it if i can narrow down the cause. I have watched almost all of your videos and your very informative. Any information you can advise me on would be very helpful. Thank you sir Henry

grayfurnaceman Thank you for answering my question. The problem wasn't what you said. I opened the gun pipe oil to burner and turned the power on. But just for a few seconds it sent the oil and that's it. Do you think its an oil pump problem or a fan motor problem? But sometimes the fan was running smoothly, but sometimes it wasn't. And I checked the fan by hand and its easy to rotate, which means i think its okay , but still i'm not sure.

I will continue seeking out your videos to see if I can't pin it down... between property taxes and income taxes I'm about all tapped out until a month or two after April and my truck decided to break down just yesterday TOO! I need to try to tackle this myself even though I'm scared to death of blowing up the house. How do I know that the oil is coming in and not igniting? (as I suspect) If that is the case what do I do? They all cost about $100. - $125 each. The first two lasted less then a year. The next one I purchased never worked and the shop would not take it back. Now I have to get another one. What do you think the problem is? It was installed by Viano Heating and Cooling, of Poughkeepsie NY. and the main owner who worked on the boiler has passed on. I called another company and they want $125. to come out that is applied to the first 15 minutes!

a pin hole leak in my standard water plumbing pipe squirted water into the box that has the reset button and tripped the burner and now the indicator light is on. If I dry it off, is it safe to press the reset button? Thanks

SuperJV4x I would not trust it. Big time safety hazard. Replace it. GFM

Been watching your vids, but can't seem to see my problem. My boiler will start and run when I hit reset switch and it runs fine. When it shuts down it won't restart on it's own. I can hear it making a humming noise, but it won't actually start unless I hit reset again. Then it runs for a while and heats up until it shuts down again. When it's running it seems to run fine. I'm not sure what to check. you have any videos on that?

My thoughts are that you could have an oil supply problem. A plugged oil filter or supply line blockage are common. GFM

@@grayfurnaceman Ok. I just changed the filter and nozzle about a week or so ago. Filter is new and when I bled it it was a strong flow. If I hit reset it fires right up and runs like it should so oil seems to be flowing. It's just when it shuts off it doesn't start back up. Like it doesn't even attempt to. If oil flow was an issue, wouldn't it at least try to start then lock out? I was hoping I could fix it because I like to know how to maintain it, but I might have to call a guy in. I just rebuilt the burn chamber and it ran great for a week before this problem. Great videos BTW.

Hi, when i push my red button box, the boiler does not stay on, i am wondering about 3 loose wires in this box. I will check out the colours if you think you can help, thanks.

Very informative on start up of my system I hear electrodes sparking but the motor does not start. You removed the motor is that so it doesn't pump oil into the system. I think the motor is bad
@grayfurnaceman10 жыл бұрын
Harvey Millner That's just a last check to be sure the pump is not wearing out. Be sure the manual reset limit(if it has one) is not kicked off. Hope this helps. GFM

Thanks I pulled the motor and found that the motor runs when I plug it in but not when it's hooked up to the furnace so I assume I'm losing power somewhere. I hope you can give me details that will help . I previously had a service call and the prob was the clogged orifice it worked fine and now it's not powering at all ...the motor that is

Question for you. We’ve talked in the past about the first mobile oil furnace that I have made a video of. The question is I’m installing a second one to heat my greenhouse. This one is a around 85’000btus compared to the one I first installed that is 63’000 it’s going to be in its own little shed attached to the greenhouse, on the one in my dad‘s workshop there is no barometric damper on the 4 inch pipe that is basically directly leaving the building and going out about 4 feet from the building with a T fitting then going up another 4 feet with a cap. On the one in my greenhouse the building is 8 x 8 and I plan on going out the flat wall 8 feet from the furnace and doing the similar T fitting and probably 2 feet of pipe up with a cap, do I need to get a 4 inch barometric damper or do these furnaces not require them? Thanks again for the help in the past Ben

I'm wondering if I need to replace my motor to my furnace..I added oil yesterday, I bleed about a gallon worth, and I constantly have to push the reset button..sometimes it starts right up other times I can spend an hour+ pushing it. When it started and stays on consistently it's fine but if I lower the thermostat about 10+ for a while then I have to start the pushing game again..a big headache..please help
@grayfurnaceman10 жыл бұрын
if you get a steady stream when bleeding and no air bubbles, you could have a pump failing. You should check pump pressure. Also, you could have a partly plugged nozzle. Hope this helps. GFM

Hello , I am getting blowbacks on my beckett fuel oil furnace. i put new filter on and replaced the pump screen and gasket. I have a new nozzle here. The furnace is not lighting sometimes but If I lightly tap the pump on the side with a small wrench it kicks right on . Now I am left wondering , is it the nozzle, the pump, or the coupler....
@grayfurnaceman9 жыл бұрын
John Peterson I would be looking at the pump solenoid if it has one. Could also have a spark problem. Shorting to ground, or a failing transformer. Hope this helps. GFM

my burner is doing nothing at all. checked the motor and works fine. the red button never tripped but I can manually trip and and the red light will come on. there is power to it. could it be my thermostat? again no noise nothing at all. also could it be my Honeywell r8184g intermittent ignition oil primary? please help! !
@grayfurnaceman8 жыл бұрын
+dandanzoo You can jumper the thermostat by connecting the T-T terminals. You can also disconnect one of the terminals connected to F-F. If it starts when disconnecting one of the F-F terminals, the cad cell is shorted. Check on the side of the burner motor to see if there is a reset button. Just a few things to try. Hope they help. GFM

My oil burner will run sometimes for days, and sometimes only for seconds after I push the red button. It is completely random and I have put a new filter on the line and a new nozzle. Why does it keep shutting down? Great videos btw!
@grayfurnaceman11 жыл бұрын
First, does the flame come on when you press the reset? If the flame is coming on and it still shuts down during the 40 second trial for ignition, There may be a sensing problem. Clean the cad cell first. If that does not help, check the resistance of the cad cell dark(20000+ ohms) lit(less than 1000 ohms). If all checks out, the cad cell relay. Hope this helps. GFM

I can’t figure out how to get my oil furnace running. I checked the igniter cleaned it off good, changed the filter in the line before it gets to the furnace, replaced the igniter transformer cause it’s bad. Replaced the CAD cell last year! The filter right before the pump had a little grime but I cleaned it off and it looks pretty good. The relay was replaced last year. When you try to run the fan kicks on for about 40 seconds then it shuts down so it still seems it’s not getting flame. Does anyone have any suggestion? My motor for the fan turns very easily I saw in a video it said it should have a little resistance. Wish I knew what the issue was it’s getting colder here and we don’t have money to pay someone to fix it. Could it be the nozzle it was replaced last year? I’m not sure what else to even try.

Thanks for the video.i have a question regarding my burner,it randomly lockout and it needs a reset frequently.what could be the problem ?(usiong siemens control) ...thanks again
@grayfurnaceman8 жыл бұрын
It could be a number of problems. Oil supply blockage is first. Change the oil filter. The cad cell could be dirty. The nozzle could be partially plugged. The cad cell relay could be failing. These are a few of the possibilities. GFM

my furnace is very similar to the one in this series. mine has power, but when I press the reset, the button goes down, nothing happens, then after about a min the reset will pop back out. I took the motor out and connected it directly to power, & it works great. so now I'm stuck, not sure why it's not doing anything.
@grayfurnaceman8 жыл бұрын
If you try to press the reset before a few minutes have passed, it will not reset. Sounds you may have an oil supply problem. GFM
