Thanks a lot for making this. I have been bass and catfishing for about a year now, and have gotten my techniques to a reasonably productive level. When I heard a nearby river was going to be stocked with rainbow trout, I figured I would give it a try. I was using berkley powerbait rainbow. The water was so clear I could see the fish become interested, but fail to bite every time. I was using a 15# mono line (apparently wayy too big, they see it.) Your suggestions of line size, dough shape, and weight placement are all very helpful tips. I will be attending a trout fishing tournament this saturday, and will be employing these tactics, hoping for some luck! Thank you!

Thanks Blair. I don't kill and gut the fish unless I can keep them chilled (the meat can start breaking down and lose integrity) . I sometimes carry a small cooler for this. I gut them before icing them and fillet them when I get home. I use 8# test fireline since it is so thin and limp and smaller is not necessary. I also guide and I need line strong enough to keep my clients from losing too many spinners. Check out my most recent trout excursions on my channel. Keep on fishing.

Would some soft plastic shads work well to catch trout?
@swmplvr5 жыл бұрын
if you are going to catch and release trout be sure to wet your hands before touching them.. the slime on them is critical to survival for a trout.. unlike pan fish bass, crappie , bluegills that have hard scales trout rely on the slime and are much more fragile than pan fish.

I like the video, it's very educational, but I already know a lot about trout fishing, being a fly fisherman. I just wanted to point out that if you release a trout, you need to wet your hands, or else you will mess up the mucus layer that protects their skin. It's basically the equivalent to getting burnt. I don't want to be negative, just thought I should point that out.

Love the video, but fair warning to the new fishermen out there, it's not always this easy. He has been doing this a while and knows where to get for that "guaranteed" catch (if there is such a thing). Starting out I used to tell everyone i was cleaning the lake because i never caught fish when i was by myself, but i must have pulled every weed or piece of trash out that was in that lake... i have once pic where at first i thought it was an eel... yeah it was a bike tire lol

Some of the best power Bair I've ever used is a thing called honey worm power bait it works wonders and this is coming from a guy who used to swear off of power bait because I thought it didn't work
@field2feast11 жыл бұрын
The line will lie on the top if the wind isn't blowing. I watch for the loops to start sinking quickly in a jerking motion. Sometimes the line will start to move to the left or right indicating that a fish has picked up the bait. The goal is to keep the fish from feeling any tension before you strike to set the hook. Windy days are hard but I still watch the loops close to the tip of my rod. If they start to straighten out, I set the hook.
@field2feast11 жыл бұрын
In this area the rainbows are stocked at about 1- 1 1/2 lbs. These are eater size. It's definitely not Lake Michigan fishing, but the video is intended to help beginning fishermen/women catch fish.
@justin-db7hw9 жыл бұрын
After about a month they grow wise to bait, had a bunch of fish jumping right beside by float and no bites. Took up fly fishing, you'd be surprised how close fish come to shore. Just got the hang of it caught 7 trout in 2 hours when no one else was getting anything. It's like it was just stocked just for me.

@field2feast11 жыл бұрын
The line will start to straighten out or will start to move to a side without the wind moving it. Some people wait until they feel the jerk from the fish taking the bait, but the fish will often release it before you can set the hook if you wait that long.

Great video and thank you. It is always great to watch informative, and interesting, videos instead of the "run of the mill" clips on youtube. Speaking of information I noticed that these questions still appear to be unanswered so I hope this helps. viker77 - what is a streenger?? A stringer is a "string" to keep your fish on, hence the name, and it is usualy a pice of thin nylon rope or string. Leo Panason - Could you tell me what the "teardrop-bait" was named? The excact type? Not sure if you get Berkley Powerbait in Norway but it is most popular in Salmon Eggs or Dough Bait. The Dough Bait is like putty, or plasticine, and the teardrop mentioned is simply a ball of this tapered, or narrowed, at the top so it is shaped like a teardrop.

@patrickleggitt951710 жыл бұрын
Finding it hard to pull in any of the brown trout we've stocked in our pond. Been fishing them for 3 weeks and no luck. I will definitely try these methods tomorrow morning. I've tried the floating dough bait trick, but the weight of my #8 hook always seems to pull the floating dough down to the bottom. Do I just need more dough? Great Vid.
@field2feast10 жыл бұрын
I use a short shank #8 with relatively thin wire. I form the dough into a tear shape. It doesn't take much power bait to float the hook. If you need to go with a tiny dough bait go to a #10. I like a worm for browns. Float it with a small marshmallow.

Use a barrel weight over a swivel and the leader with the hook attached under the swivel to make it easier to see when you get a hit and the fish will not notice the weight.

um..the video ended before you cooked the trout meal. I was looking forward to that as you seem extremely knowledgeable about trout. 2 points, I was told you shouldn't release stocked trout as they are not native to the lake and are there to catch and eat. secondly, the trout seemed to bite on anything you could possibly throw out there. Reminded me of Lake Franz in Colorado, every cast within 5 seconds you got a strike. Nice video though.

The deeper the water the harder to fish. You want to use the smallest split shot that will get the bait down.
