Homer in the Iliad and the Odyssey speaks only of Danaans, Achaeans, Argians and not of Greeks. The Hellenes (tribe of Southern Thessaly also called Argos Pelasgians), at his time, did not constitute yet a people or a Nation (Thucydides I,3). He affirms in the Iliad that "Zeus is Pelasgians and dodonean" (XVI,234). Precisely these Pelasgians (🇦🇱) were considered by all the ancient Greek authors as "the first inhabitants of Greece" before "The arrival of the Hellenes (🇬🇷)"! Another word that was misunderstood or glossed over. Indeed the Greeks arrived from somewhere because they were not indigenous. As they did not come from the North ( one wanted to make us believe the opposite), they could only be foreigners coming from elsewhere. It is this elsewhere which is difficult to define very precisely. But the legends, which are only embellished, idealized or metaphorized historical facts, give us some precious indications on the first foreign ethnic groups having occupied the country of the Pelasgians: the Danaans (Egyptians from whom the Dorians descend), the Cadmeans (Phoenicians) and the Pelopides (Assyrians). Among the peoples of archaic Greece the Ionians, Aeolians and Arcadians were descendants of the Pelasgians, indigenous populations conquered by the Hellenic invaders: they could claim to be indigenous populations. Now Herodotus explains very well that the Ionians were Pelasgians who, after having rubbed shoulders with the Greeks and learned their language, became full-fledged Hellenes... The Ionians were thus a fraction of the Pelasgians people (🇦🇱) having adopted the civilization of the Hellenic invaders (🇬🇷), assimilated their culture and integrated their ethnicity ( Herodotus I,56,57,58/VIII,44 ). Etc .

In this age the best you were getting in terms of siege equipment is a poorly made ram. Now take into account they came by sea not a lot of options for building a ram especially since the trojans were using fire in the start so it wouldn't of worked out well. Then the final point the greeks couldn't even get close to the gate. Bronze age was pure brutality fight to the last man.
@hfar_in_the_sky
@hfar_in_the_sky 2 жыл бұрын
@@joecobb5520 "Bronze age was pure brutality fight to the last man." This comment gave me a headache. No, siege warfare in the bronze age was not "pure fighting to the last man." The most common tactic was to simply starve the defender out, with battering rams and scaling ladders being employed if it was deemed necessary to scale the walls. And we have found depictions of such equipment being used as far back as the Old Kingdom of Egypt, not to mention the apparent siege trenches around Gath dating back to the 9th century BCE. You say that the greeks would not have had time or the resources to build siege equipment, because they just landed. Except if they set up for a siege, YES THEY WOULD HAVE. Which is also reasonable because if this was actually the original story of the Trojan War, it would have gone on for TEN YEARS. It's fine to enjoy this scene. But it's important to recognize it for the pure Hollywood action schlock that it is and not an accurate depiction of bronze age warfare

None of that siege equipment other than MAYBE ladders seems to have been recorded ever being used in war at that time. Which doesn't any make sense to me. They have bronze things, they mastered the rocks, built sea faring ships, rode on chariots, the simple battering ram wasn't invented until 500+ years later?

@@b.sylphaen The reason there aren't people fighting in the city and on the walls is because the Trojans decisively defeated the Greeks in this battle. It would have been very difficult for the Greeks to get inside because the Trojan war takes place before siege engines existed in Europe. Agamemnon, was overconfident of his army's capabilities. Instead of cutting off Troy and starving them into submission he acted out of emotion due to Hector killing his brother. Helms Deep is a great battle but the final charge is bull crap. Stefan Stadler the trench had to completely encircle Winterfell. If they dug it further out it may not have been competed in time. The Unsullied nor the siege equipment would have fit behind it. Archers were already in position by the time dead broke through. Honestly this battle has its flaws, some of which I choke up to poor directing/writing, while other parts suit the situation they’re in and the leadership they have, but for the most part what’s great about it outweighs the negatives. These days the hate bandwagon is the hip thing on the internet. The way I see it though is we’re going to get the book version of it eventually anyways. Plus the payoff for what happened in so 3 has yet to come.

@@forrestpenrod2294 it's valid criticism. Everything you said was nice, but it still doesn't explain why they would even think about putting their troops behind a barrier which supposedly could hold the dead off. And why do the defenders even have siege equipment? The only fired once and it didn't even do much. Pretty cynical that you brush off any criticism as hate bandwagon, I could just as easily say that chug everything D&D makes down like it's a glas of water on a hot day.

i think it is the commanders fault in this movie.. agammemnon was no military commander and he thought brute number can win this fight instead of discipline and shield formation. achilles's troops use their shields well during the beach battle.. odesius didn't use much of his personal men in battle and he wanted agammemnon's men to be demolish first until weakened.. ajax was just mindless brute giant who has no signs of ever commanding an army. at the end of the day, it is trojan disciple that wins over number.

As a Southeast Asian myself, allow me to make an example out of fun intention from the badminton world. Achilles is like Lin Dan - Strong, proud, fast and extremely ego, whereas Hector is Lee Chong Wei - Resilient, determined, caring and humble. Both Achilles and Hector were legends of their time, but so are Lin and Lee! Anyway, just for fun. Cheers all! 🇲🇾 🤟🏽😂 🔥 ❤

Siege engines largely didn't exist at this time with mostly the Assyrians being the first to innovate and implement siege engines with little evidence to for other bronze age civilizations at the time. But its possible that they could since this was late in the era and that practice could've been adapted and the directors really just didn't make one or two because they already planned for the greeks to lose in this battle.

@warhawk9566
@warhawk9566 5 жыл бұрын
I think it's because this war in general is not well documented. The official documents of the war were written hundreds of years afterwards and involved so much mythology that it's kinda difficult to know what actually happened during the course of the war. In fact last I heard a theory that is becoming more widely accepted is that the Trojan war might have been a myth to begin with
@TheDrunkHamster
@TheDrunkHamster 5 жыл бұрын
@@warhawk9566 as much as I hate to admit it, it probably is a myth. That would explain how something so seemingly monumental could go without hardly any history behind it, even by the standards in those days. The city of troy is real though, that much is certain. It was just called Wallusa
@theamorphousflatsch2699
@theamorphousflatsch2699 Жыл бұрын
@@warhawk9566 well that theory is bullshit because we do know troy/Troia/Troja existed, known to the mycenean greeks as Ilion. And we do know there was a massive war in western anatolia that involved the greeks, during which Ilion was sacked and possibly destroyed. We know the Hittites documented such a war and the archeological findings suggest there were several military campaigns over decades all around the anatolian costal cities causing migrations into the western Mediterranean and north africa. Wether or not the heroes and duels really took place as mentioned in the Iliad can be disputed but in the bronze age Mediterranean it was infact a custom for well known warriors and nobility to challenge each other in chariot and foot duels before battle so it's maybe not that far fetched after all.

What's interesting is that Troy somewhat gets Hoplite warfare correct to a certain extent. However they didn't fight like Hoplites in the Bronze Age. But, then again, this type of warfare is how it was written in the Illiad but only because of the Dark Ages where Greeks had lost the ability to record history and by the time they were writing again everyone had forgotten all of the details like how they fought in the Mycenean Era. So the question is when you make a movie about the Trojan War is it better to depict the type of warfare Homer described or the type of chariot dependent warfare that people of the time would have still been using?

EDIT: Those of you rebuking me in the replies, I made this comment four years ago. I don't even remember making it. Pretty sure I was happy that archers were shown earning their salt for once instead of being glorified set pieces.

Here's some free advice, Hollywood. If you want to make money off of sequels, spin-offs, etc . . . DON'T completely destroy the franchise with a nonsensical ending, one so disrespectful of fans that the level of contempt it showed for them was beyond belief. If you do, don't expect anything BUT salt and shade from then on. Letting those two idiots destroy the franchise and blow BILLIONS of dollars in future revenue will go down in history for being as epically stupid as attacking Stalingrad in the winter, or telling Mike Tyson he talks funny to his face.
