There's a Harvard professor who did a whole explanation of the balls being deflated because it was so cold. It's mathematically impossible for any deflation to have been done aside from the cold weather deflation.

The fact that a cold environment causes a drop in pressure is well understood. Every autumn, I have to add air to my tires, and every spring release some air. The question is why not just add more air to the balls?
