I see now on aliexpress some versions of the radio do not show DSP so could be analogue without tuning mute. The R-304D seems to be non dsp.

Unique look for a Tecsun. Headphone jack is not in the best place. Seems to have similar performance to my Kaito ka390. Nice radio. Thanks for the review.

The KA-390 is one I’m not familiar with - except for it has been around for some time. Most of these DSP- based radios perform very much the same, depending on setup. Thanks for watching. 📻🙂

That muting when tuning is a real shame and typical of many DSP radios such as the PL-330 it would drive you insane when scanning the bands especially the ham bands. I think it would have been better to keep it pure analogue but it's so cheap now when most of the actual electronics of the radio come on a chip! What I can't understand is why none of these radios have BFO, it's only a few dollars worth of components and it would make a big difference because I love these analogue radios. I have the Tecsun R-9700DX and I just love tuning around on it and I love the way the display lights up at night, a BFO would make it a lot more enjoyable for just a couple of dollars worth of components, I just don't understand the logic. It would be good if the R-304P display lit up. I suppose you can use an external BFO but it's not as fun as having one in the radio. I know Tecsun have the 880,990x, S-8800 and the H501x but their sound quality on SSB is not good especially the 880,990x and S-8800, it's not just Tecsun most manufacturers use the same flawed DSP chip and the audio is poor on SSB which seems to be an after thought. These analogue radios sound so much better on SSB this is why I'd love a BFO on the analogue radios. The PL-660/680 really do sound great on SSB and of course SSB is essential to the serious SW DX'er because you can use SSB/ECSS on commercial stations to knock out interference or a stronger close station which can work much better than DSP filters.

Funny thing, just for kicks I bought an Eton Elite MIni, something I can walk around with and just have in the pocket. It was $35.00 and seriously, it is not a bad radio. It performs well and it is tiny. Just a comment to those who are in the market for a $30 something dollar radio.

Tecsun PL-660 is a fine radio. Not the greatest, but does everything quite well. A good choice. 📻🙂
