All of these comments saying that he didn't empty his air bags when that's not something you do, especially if your truck doesn't have a switch to empty them. You lower the dolly legs until they touch the ground, not leave them 2 inches off of the ground so that when you pull out from under the trailer it whams down real hard on the truck, and when the next driver hooks to it he can hardly get the truck under it without having to shove hard and ram into the kingpin. If you lower them to touch the ground then it will be at the right height to unhook and hook back to easily. I've had to pick up trailers before where the previous idiot that dropped it left the dolly legs 4 inches off of the ground and it was loaded with 42,000 lbs. Even though my truck had a switch to lower the suspension it didn't help because my tires were higher than the trailer, so I had to crank the hell out of the handle to get it high enough for the tires to go under it. I called the idiot that did it every cuss word in the book plus some new made up words because there was simply absolutely no freaking excuse for that stupid shit.

@@christopherdeitz5436Well I've been driving for 13 years and I've had trucks that you couldn't empty the air bags on and it hooked and unhooked just fine. I've always lowered the dolly until it touches the ground and it unhooks perfectly and hooks perfectly. It's how I was shown to do it and how it should always be done because the next truck that hooks to the trailer you're dropping might not be able to empty their air bags and if you leave the dolly 2 or 3 inches off of the ground then they will have a hard time getting under it, plus the trailer is going to slam down on your truck when you unhook.

1. Trailer is loaded, you can tell this when he pulls away & it drops.......... he should have raised trailer height on tractor air suspension & then wind legs down so it’s higher ....because a loaded trailer sinks the tractor height down. 2. Because it’s loaded & it’s good practice.....when unhooked pull forward 10 inches or so & then lower tractor suspension to lower trailer down on to its legs gently.... this prevents trailer legs & winding gear damage, it also lets the driver know the legs are actually down & hasn’t forgotten to wind them down. 3 then pull forward & clear the trailer. 4 by raising the legs & tractor suspension at the beginning it makes it easier for the next guy to couple up & prevents more damage to tractor unit trying to get underneath. I’m the BOSS I spotted a number of mistakes here unlike EVERYONE commenting
@firefighterpk2440 Жыл бұрын
You said all that and for the most part you wasted your breath. Dolly down so the pads just touch the ground, drop the tractor suspension and pull up till the trlr clears the 5th wheel then give it a bit to make sure the trlr doesn't sink. The next guy to hook it drops his suspension to get under it, then airs it up before he gets to the pin. As close as he dropped this to the other trailer, he better leave the pads up a couple inches then drop the air, so the next guy can raise it off the ground and pull forward enough to crank up the landing gear.

One problem, some companies don't have a air system drop valve, to crank the landing gear until the tractor 5th wheel is off the trailer is unreasonable in my opinion, of course I only drove for 44 years so I know I don't know much about truck driving
@tomasperalta3961 Жыл бұрын
You really have no idea how air suspension works. It’s self-leveling, that trailer dropping is simply a result of gravity. It’s not going to drop any faster or slower, because the speed the truck pulls out from under the trailer affects the trailer drop speed more than the weight of the trailer. And that truck will sit at the same height whether there’s 30k lbs on the fifth wheel plate, or 10 lbs. If you’re going to be a fucking knob, at least know what you’re talking about.

Yeah, that hissing you hear are the bags dropping. The landing gear was off the ground because the trailer lowered onto the ground. You never let the bags fully deflate before pulling out because the fifthwheel may not drop down. The next trailer you back under will get two holes punched in the nose. You leave your bags inflated when backing under so the tractor picks up the trailer before contacting the kingpin. It reduces stress on the landing gear, guarantees contact with the apron, and nearly eliminates the opportunity to jump the fifthwheel or high hooking.

Easiest way to crank the gear is to make sure you leave it an inch off the ground when your dropping the trailer, that way when you hook up you couple your glad hands, pull forward then crank the gear all the way. We do this all day at our yard. It’s courteous to leave an inch.
@wendellherndon77392 жыл бұрын
I would beat his ass cuz if a driver doesn't have respect for another driver you ain't supposed to put the trailers real close on the crank side of the landing gear of the trailer you got to be able to get in there to crank the landing gear so the fact that he put it so tight over to that side is wrong not no great job we got in a tight spot he didn't consider the next driver
@parentsbasement77342 жыл бұрын
Our yard is all like this maybe 6 in between we drop em low so you can hook air up and then pull forward to crank gear. It's really fun in the winter or some jackass leaves it high and us go to move a trailer to get a trailer

@timerickson7056 Жыл бұрын
@@jhask64 well the most memorable was a Bradley fighting vehicle laying on it side at Maersk Tacoma WA . Memorable beyond that lots especially in newer industrial areas during the first hot summer asphalt gets soft. So soft motorcycle kickstands will sink another biggy is when the shear pin either falls out or shears due to dry landing gear the driver lowers the landing gear and not look pull out with one landing gear not down. Ive been in about every area of the trucking industry for a lot more years than you and owned a trucking company and was able to enjoy reading accident reports too often. Things like leaving landing gear only retracted a couple inches to save time then ripping the landing gear off on the first railroad crossing . A too common practice in local trucking where a driver can handle a dozen different trailers every day. Landing gear shit happens way to often. Landing gear fubars are very very common. And EVERY DRIVER INVOLVED MADE THE SAME MISTAKE. THEY DIDN'T STOP AND WAIT FOR IT TO SETTLE. Your argument reminds me of a "experienced" driver that didn't want to listen about specific laws and requirements for his runs. A few weeks later thank God I didn't own that company because that guy got the company a BIG FINE $750,000 BECAUSE THE DRIVER WAS HAULING HAZMAT WITHOUT THE HAZMAT MANUAL. THE FINE WAS REDUCED TO UNDER $50,000 UNDER CONDITION OF TERMINATING THE DRIVER. A little knowledge is dangerous when experience causes dangerous shortcuts . A new driver is most likely to have a accident within their first 6 months and decreases each month until the 2 year mark it levels out until the 5 year mark when there is a sharp increase in driver error accidents . Experience can and. Often does cause complacency . Be careful out there

@TheOpendoormedia2 жыл бұрын
The only thing I would have done, at the 35 years of experience, completely dumped airbags empty before pulling out. But at least he did lower his land gear and then raised it just high enough so that when he picks it up later or when somebody else picks it up, the weight of the trailer would push down hard enough on the truck as it is backed underneath the deck plate to actually lift the landing gear off the ground. In this tight situation All he has to do is hook on the airline and pull forward and his pads would be at least an inch off the ground giving him clearance of the second trailer when he gets landing gear past the nose of the trailer to completely roll up the landing gear and complete his pre-trip of the equipment. So many of these inexperienced fools will have the landing gear scrape the ground as they backed trailer up in this tight situation, unhook the lines and pull forward but when backing back underneath it, there is not enough play to get the pad off the ground so now you're screwed. Always leave about an inch between the pad and the ground and drop your airbags. That way you're not screwed or screwing somebody else who comes in to pick up the equipment.
@karlcooper34272 жыл бұрын
I stood back and watched a driver in a company truck try to muscle the tractor under the trailer, fail !! The driver broke a shear pin in the tractor's driveline. The landing gear was pressed into the asphalt tothe top of the wheel on the landing gear and tearing up the asphalt. Roll on Tri-state Trucking, Joplin, Mo. 🙏👍
@TheOpendoormedia2 жыл бұрын
One thing I've learned while I was running flat top was always have boards to go underneath the landing gear so the landing gear would not sink in asphalt. That little piece of experience while watching somebody else not do this paid off over the years. 8 2x4 cat approximately one and a half feet long is all that is needed. Bottom boards facing one direction, next set of boards facing 90° angle to the bottom board. No sinking, no embarrassment, and no calling boss/ former boss of how stupid you're really are and how expensive it would be so he will have proof of how stupid you really are. 😁

He started to pull out without the pause and my first thought was, "Oh, sh**! Landing gear." Having seen a lot of both very skilled and not so skilled drivers drop trailers it is definitely something that goes through rhe mind. I have seen landing gear they were SURE they had placed and locked correctly completely collapse. Not necessarily the driver's fault. Sometimes equipment fails. Old, new, doesnt matter. Sometimes crap happens. As someone who worked in a scale house at a manufacturing facility I was more aggravated by a driver forgetting to raise their landing gear on my scales or adjusting their axles while on the scales. Fastest way to get Mama Bear to come out (not counting in defense of kids). Dont break our scales.
