My first daily driver, 1978, 17 years old, a '73 Travelall with 392, automatic, 2wd, trailer towing package because those thirsty beasts could be had pretty cheap on the heels of the 1970's Arab oil embargos. Low miles, bench seat but carpeted, AC, dual tanks, fold down rear gate with electric window, faux wood sides, and the black sprayed on "vinyl" roof. $49 a month payment but I was stupid and totaled it in about a year - fishtailed going around a corner in the rain, front end went down in the steep ditch, and when it came up out of the ditch that big old block of steel laid right up on the driver's side diagonally across the road, duel tanks just pouring gas everywhere. My buddy landed on me but when we heard the gas gurgling we and our other buddy who was in the back seat wasted no time climbing out the passenger side doors and getting away. Didn't burn but was twisted beyond repair. I miss it all the time. I grew up in C bodied Travelalls in the '60's

Great story. I was born in ‘71, grew up in Dad’s 1974 Travelall. 2wd, 392, Sunburst Yellow with wood grain siding, black interior with bucket fronts. Pulled a 27ft Terry camper on the Blue Ridge Parkway end-to-end. I’d dove to find that truck, was sold about 1990 or so.

Found your channel . Great stories, great Travelall! I have a 75 200 Travelall AWD 392 Custom, factory winch bumper, A/C, roof rack, etc plus gun racks, vintage CB etc. 285/75-16 Discoverer M/T now and original ? BFG 7.50-16's on original rims. ( I usually put 235/85-16 on trucks but have some 255 and 315's to try ) It belonged to my Dad's IH collector friend, J Wythe, so I am 2nd owner got it from his estate sale they both fought cancer till 11 years ago. It is my personal truck as well, but so are my few others. Thanks for the movie.

I had a similar vintage 1310 w/winch. Was brushfire truck. They would park it, set micro-lock and winch big trucks out of the mud. Could not be stopped. POWER in winch.

I was in the Marine Corps back in '76 when I got my first IH. It was a 1210 4 Door with a 6 foot bed and a 345 V8 4 speed. Dual fuel tanks, straight axle in the front, and supplemental springs above the main springs on the rear axle. It had 16.5 rims and I got some 16 inch split ring rims. Had to start using 1st gear to take off from a stop. Got rid of it back in 1980. When I was at New River Air Station in N.C., my Marine buds were always asking me for a ride and I would say "you guys have to chip in for gas." So I would collect all the dollars and roll up to a gas station and only put gas on the drivers side saddle tank and have the gauge selector read the empty passenger saddle tank. After I put in the gas, they would look at the gas gauge and comment that the gauge didn't even move. I would just say it was a big tank. Well, on the way back I made everybody put in more gas, I told them the tank was empty, and wouldn't you know it, I hadn't put in two dollars and the tank overflowed. Whew boy!!!! they all got out and started looking at the truck and found the other tank! LOL I didn't care. Gas was expensive back then... .58 cents a gallon. You could be driving through the country and come across a big ole red box about5 or 6 foot high with a gase hose on it. No read outs just a big red light indicator, it would take dollar bills and you just fed them in, 4 or 5 one dollar bills at time and it would just take em and the red light would come on and you'de dispense your fuel.

You have a whole yard of IHC... I have 69 1200D 4x4 with 345 that had BW T-18 4 spped Travelall...uncle bought it new in Modesto. Two time Alaskan hwy airstream pulling beast...3.73 gears Now she is mine. I bought it from him in 1992... I love my Irash. Sissy po asks me why I call her Irash... I may be irrational...for finding spare parts...always fun... Now it has 392 +0.03" pistons...and T-19.. Beside it sits the ZF-650 6 speed... Oh BTW..a 345 and 392...or even a 304 or 266....Basically the same size block... But you knew that... Some parts interchange. Yes of course bore and strokes got bigger... I actually miss the 345. She needed basically just gaskets...minor overhaul at 121 k miles.....much better mpg compared to 392... Machine shop broke the block during air impact disassembly... SOB... Hence I found a 73 IHC 392 core...and rebuild it... Ok Fred...get that OD tranny in her. I can get her up to 110 mph quick...but then run out of gears... Never give up on your irrational dreams... Pops had 62 IHC half ton 2WD...with 266...3 on tree...smooth cruiser. My first car...or when I got a job and could buy insurance... Low to the ground and smooth..plus the AC worked...I would cruise Tucson with a frosty pair...Alpine white. I loved giving girls rides home in HS...so roomy...and naturally low to the ground...easy entrance Yes a little body cancer...in the corners.. We bought it for little vacations to Mexico pulling Open Road single axle trailer.. $600 in 1973.

Dad talked about his IH trucks (late 50's?), said they were workhorses, just didn't last Michigan winters, & as a builder needed them to look good for business. Guess that might be why he was so proud of his IH Farm all Cub, lol! I had a worn '74, back in the mid 80's, as a backup plow rig, definitely was a tank. Thanx for the vids, & saving all that iron, we certainly don't have many around anymore, MI salt...

Keep telling us the stories. Toyo also makes 255 85 16 tires, M55’s and a mud tire. I love tall skinny tires. They fit on my Ramcharger and Jeep TJ with no lift.

I just found your channel I love international my 2nd car was a 61 travel all had a 345 with a 3 on the tree I went into the USAF in 1979 and we had a lot of IH trucks learned a great deal over the years I have had around 20 or so internationals trucks travel all s and scouts will be watching more of your channel

My father loved international trucks. Later in life, we collected quite a few. They all got sold while I was away. Regret that horribly. Hope to have another some day. Thanks for sharing these memories. Takes me back to happy times

I had a 79 rally scout back in the early 80s and at that time I was told parts would be getting hard to get so I let it go. I kick myself for listening to others that just didn't want to take the time to look up parts in the book for a vehicle they didn't see a lot of.

My dad when I was in Jr high and part of highschool he had a ex South Carolina Forestry revenue service truck 72 ih 1210 forest green/green white and black factory interior vinyl floor mat front to rear travelall manual brakes, manual steering, three spd column shifter transmission 304 2bbl Holley factory dual glasspack muffler exhaust dual rear side exit except for the 12 inch long 4 inch stainless steel slant cut exhaust tips good God it was loud!! And it was a good running great work truck it pulled trailers hauled firewood in a 68 Ford ranger f100 trailer and pulled vehicles out of the ditch drug tractors around with the hay wagon attached to the hitch, and also yanked a county dump truck snow plow truck out of the snow Bank it was stuck in,it was impressive for what it was the truck had the manual window tailgate, the truck dad had after that one was a rusty 78 GMC high sierra k15 Dana 44 front and rear 3.70 gears was bought because he squared up on the travelall which always had no brakes 400sbc th350 full time 203 tire fryer transfer case, and he worked it too but that IH made that GMC look bad all the time.. it's actually the same truck I have said my dad had that had american racing 9.50 16.5 white spoke steel wheels on BFG mud terrain tires 31.10.50 16.5 all the way around the GMC high sierra had chrome spokes with 12.50 15 33 inch gateway gumbo wide mudders

I had a coworker give me 68 VW bug with a blown motor. I trailered it home and cleaned it inside and out. Lots of elbow grease and detailing. It was pretty straight. One dent. I left it on the trailer and parked it with a for sale sign. The guy that bought it said he used to own it. He put the dent in it. His wife made him sell it. He’s divorced now and happily restoring it.

It's cool how things work out l like that. My dad sold his 76 bronco in 82. Ever since he got rid of it he wanted another one. In 2001 we went to the Smoky mountains on vacation and saw one parked outside a gas station with a for sale sign on it. He bought it immediately! It had a spray can camo paint job, a 6 inch lift, boggers and the finders had been cut. 4 years later we were looking through some old stuff in a box and found some paperwork with his old bronco's vin number on it. We went outside and turns out he bought his old one back all those years later! Amazing!

I love your old IH stories, only one problem, you make me hate myself for selling my old Scout. I must be getting old because now I can't remember if it was a 67 or 68. I thought it was a 68 but I remember it as being the first year with a v-8 so if must have been a 67. 266 ci Pale yellow with 3 spd and a twin stick transfer case. oh yeah it had 488 gears and it slow drive from Bend to Salem to see family

My parents had the same 1971 travel haul including the honeycomb grill and wood grain panels. The electric window motor in the back would break at times which was fun. Best memory was my folks driving us three boys to Newfoundland for Christmas 1973 for our first Christmas with mom’s family. Worst memory was the following years rust had ate through the wheel wells causing who ever road in back to cough from our rough dusty roads leading to our farm. Ours also had the duel fuel tanks. Thanks for memories.

My mom was quite handy in our 62 Travelall...and take us places.... The AC..with that Tecumseh compressor...put out a nice chill....if you sat in front seat

Love it. My 69 1200 had the same interior package except in blue. No barn doors, that would have been awesome. 392 ¾ ton 4x4. It was a brute and I love it.

That's a great story about this truck. My oldest brother got a "68 Travelall when he returned from Vietnam. I was only about 10 years old at the time and he used to take me fishing and camping. These were the first 4x4 overlanders. I have loved the Travelalls ever since.

I drove a 1956 corn binder hoopie with a 4 spd floor shift ,2 spd rear-end 20 ft. Enclosed bed no power steering so it had a huge steering wheel drove it in downtown Seattle with all the steep streets and stop lights for many years ill never forget that truck was the most solid driver ever

Barn doors are the way to go. I had a tahoe with tail gait and lift up glass, to put any thing in or out of the back you had to reach over the tail gait. Ugh ! Tall skinny tires are the how these era trucks should look. As for the back door maybe just prep it to keep from getting worse? I d k

Great video about an amazing truck. I really respect your honesty about changing original parts (seats, repair and repainting to match original). You always respect the story of the truck more than anybody, but make it okay to tweak things when necessary. Better to fix something or it will rust to nothing. And then your decision becomes part of the story for a future generation. Great video.

No it had the barn doors when it was new but the door was damaged the 1st week they owned it
