For me it’s not that Hayley has grasped the fundamentals, or that she has a superb ability to get the messages across. Many people possibly have those attributes, for me it’s that she has taken the time, a great deal of time to do this that I love and appreciate. Many thanks Hayley.

@@paul191282 ...Paul, the steering system is exactly the same as in a normal cab-over tractor. But, the difference between a yard-tractor and a road-tractor is that a) the shunter's wheelbase is a lot shorter b) you have far more visibility around you when maneuvering (especially if the unit is equipped with a huge convex mirror....and I mean huge). I've had the pleasure of shunting 100 trailers on Friday evenings and all-day Saturdays for give or take 7 years,.....the last 4 with a real McCoy Yard-Shunter with hydraulic 5th Wheel lifter, as opposed to to a day-cab tractor with "Armstrong" trailer landing-gear crank. LOL......and that was not my main job, mind you, as I managed the Fleet Safety department for that 65 power-unit company/ That being said, I commend Hayley for what she's doing to help greenhorns get their feet wet. I know all they get you to do is reverse in like a S shape then reverse into a fake bay/box. Unhitch a trailer, drive the unit out an park next to the trailer then do drive the unit under the trailer to hitch up the connect it all again an it's done in one day. Most of the training then is all on the road driving forwards on the test routes. That's what mine was like anyway...

Nice Vlog Hayley. I use to use the mid axle to guide me. Great explanation. The worst thing as a new driver is reversing off a busy road. The test learns you the basics. When you get sent somewhere with a sharp reverse on a busy road it is a nightmare. People are impatient and it will stress you out. You will sweat LOL. We all went through that phase. Matter of practice. Small urban rear steer trailers are another story. Also The new LST long semi trailers with rear steer. I loved them. Longer but a dream to drive once you get it. Ended my days shunting. I hate drivers who stand and laugh at some new driver struggling. I have helped many in the yard when I had the time. Your teaching skills shine through. Respect. Deady well what can I say.

That was excellent. My dad taught me, his favourite expression is “Stop waving the unit around like a flag” and “ Don’t turn the steering wheel”. Basically as you have said get the trailer going in the right direction at the start, and take the lock off as you go backwards. One other tip if you have oversteered, pull forward a little bit, dont pull the trailer all the way out, and have another bite at it.

My tip: Ignore the armchair experts. I have come from rigids once and then came back into the industry after 18 years teaching. Both times my rusty reversing skills were mocked by warehouse staff that don't even have any kind of licence other than car. The other drivers were fine and just said nothing or offered a bit of constructive advice. It will take time, a sunny day is one thing, but doing blindsides without space at night in heavy rain will test you even more. Another tip: To reverse in a straight line turn the wheel towards the mirror that the trailer is in.

Well I think you covered that subject pretty darn well. Plenty of examples in the classroom and out. I bet it's a really tricky subject to try and explain hence so many different methods handed down from driver to driver. I think this should help a lot of new drivers. It will offer them more information, another drivers perspective, and I think the fact we all learn slightly differently will help with that pool of advice that people can use as reference material. Your live demo really explains where I was going wrong on my driver evaluation and how I massively oversteered. I also wasn't aware of the delay from turning the wheel to the trailer moving, this now explains so much as to where I messed up. I was making the mistake of transferring the steering wheel movement from my car to an artic with disastrous results....... and the cat just vanished at 07:24 !!! magic cat
@M050005833 жыл бұрын
Really good video, very well explained, its just a shame you didn't get it out 4 weeks ago so I could use it when I first passed, lol. I'm still new to driving class 1 but I found a better way to approach steering that may be useful for some people. Drive the truck, not the trailer. I stopped trying to turn the trailer, and started thinking about where the unit needs to be to influence the trailer, remember you're steering a truck that's pushing a trailer, your not steering the trailer. As soon as I started thinking like this I stopped having to think about which way to turn the wheel, because it was the same as driving a class 2 or car. This also helped me learn when to take off the steering, because I was focused on the unit just as much as the trailer. Luckily I figured this out on day 2 of my training, so have never needed to learn the rules you mentioned, although my instructor tried to teach them to me, but since then I have never had to think about which way to turn the wheel, it was just natural. which made the whole process a lot easier.

Thanks for sharing your explanation of your reversing your trailer. I'm not a trucker but I tow a 23 foot caravan and a similar set of rules. You do talk in a common sense way and I do love your videos. Following from Sydney Australia.
@xj3583 жыл бұрын
Mate, I have said it for a long time. Anyone who is confident with reversing a caravan, including left and right reverse turns, will find reversing an artic (or semi in Australia) a piece of cake. Its exactly the same method and understanding which is required. No need to spend months driving a rigid truck which will give you zero understanding of reversing an artic. Get yourself a caravan and practice. For example, if you were to drive a Mercedes Sprinter van or similar (which can be driven on a car licence) and stuck a similar length trailer on the back, you wouldn't be a million miles away from the minimum length required to take an artic test, yet you are gaining the exact same experience and understanding of reversing whilst only holding a car licence. 31 years Class 1 in the UK and 13 years MC (road train) in Australia.

I passed my class test three weeks ago. Last week was my first class one job with the agency and I was spoiled with a new Scania V8, which was an absolute joy to drive. Flatbed with heavy site metal supports. Also rear steering axle on the trailer, all brand new to me. I ended up in a housing estate twice looking for the site and I can assure you all, take your time and you WILL reverse it and have the trailer going exactly where you want it. Also sharp bends, just go for it and you'll be amazed what you can get it around, definitely easier than a rigid. After debating if i wanted to drive class 2 (which i do enjoy) or class 1 I definitely want to do class 1. Seeing that trailer follow you around is so cool. I also drove a pick up with a triple axle trailer and what a pain in the arse that was, way more difficult to reverse!! Although after a day of it be prepared to drive your car home still thinking you have a trailer hanging off the back 😂😂

I was doing the same mistakes at the beginning and I wanted to get to the bay in the first attempt- most of the time it was a disaster:) I felt soooo embarrassed and I was crying in the cab later on:) Now it's been a 3 years- reversing is a different story but I must admit- I'm struggling sometimes- when reversing on services or blind side. You are a really good driver - shame I wasn't that calm- that would save my hair (turned grey:))). good luck with everything Hayley!!!
@a320nick Жыл бұрын
@HanaMontana: You have my sympathy. I started to get better - then started to get in the bay in one go, then it just got steadily worse and worse. I'm developing a fear EVERYTIME I pull into a yard thinking WTF is going to happen his time - I was making a mash of it and so reversed back in a dead straight line to the ready bay. got out and asked them - they told me what the other drivers do so I had a good idea then. Then somebody talked me through it, nice chap, fellow driver, but that never works if they make a mistake like, right from left etc. So, I guess, at the end of the day it's up to Number 1 and you don't have to like it, but you have to get it done. G.O.A.L get out and look - is very, very helpful especially if you are not sure whether or not you might clip something. One thing, when reversing 45 footers, be very cagey, or they will go through the unopened bay doors 💯% of the time!

The only thing I would say other then excellent Hayley is be very careful when driving along the front of already filled bays getting too close to the front of other parked up unloading trucks when you sweep past upto the rear wheels of your tractor and then doing your hard left hand down can cause the rear end to swing into an occupied bay damaging the front of the parked truck , watch your own video and you will see the rear corner drivers side sweep into bay one as you hard left for bay two sit away sufficient distance and make your turn, 35years experience now and a few minor mishaps have taught me to concentrate at all times and have a good look round first , good luck in your new career stay safe stay sharp and never do anything faster then your guardian angel can fly ,lots of love

Excellent vid Hayley! Only passed my Class 1 2 weeks ago and on my week one on artics so the reversing is still challenging. Seen a lot of drivers 'Jack knifing' round on the RDC's onto bays. If I'm on the General Haulage and the Palletised; I am vising smaller yards with loads of obstacles on site to avoid and no marked bays so impossible to just jack it round. It's a lot smoother with gentle movements, and easier to correct. Very different to the rigids! Good tips, a trainer in the making. Shame 'certain KZbinrs' aren't more helpful but it is what it is. Brilliant Hayley😁 What a great video. Plenty of action shots with great explanation and love the demos on the table(that little truck is awesome). All broken down very mathematically. Got some great tips there. You should of been a teacher🤣 ( I know you were. It shows). Your reversing has come along nicely. Well done👍 Once again. Great video. Shalom 😁

Thanks Hayley! I pass my psv licence 19 years ago and my Class 2, 2 years ago. I only passed my class 1 2 weeks ago and have been lucky to get a night truck job! Unfortunately for me, all the years driving a rigid vehicle has fried my brain when it comes to reversing an articulated. I am using this video as gospel as I have still been finding it hard to reverse into a bay! Fingers crossed I can do it tonight. Thank you ❤

As a newly qualified class 1 driver who has yet to do his first shift alone. Thank you I have just learnt so much and will watch again and again before my assessment next week with Boots.

Thanks for the video, as a new pass I have been finding it hard to get my bar reversing right. Using your tips has helped me to reverse better into bays

Dave from Smart Trucking mentioned a nice little trick: Grab the wheel from the 6 o'clock position, and wherever you turn THAT point, that's where the back of your trailer will go. Helped me quite a bit. 👍👍👍👍

Cracking video 👍two weeks into my new role as a newly passed and I’m experiencing all what you have said. Most of what you said i can and will apply as most of my yards are fairly big so your tips are really going to be helpful thank you. I have one place thou that I struggle and unfortunately after a couple of attempts I had to get an experienced guy to get it in as I was holding people up. It was Heathrow Aviation’s and you basically have to jack knife it in as there is no room at all. What Makes it worse is that it’s so fast paced there which makes you just get more flustered

You know what ? You deserve tons of respect and compliments. Despite being a young woman to a very male profession you quickly established yourself, gained respect and followers and you always try to promote this proffesion. What can I say. You have my total respect. Pete "the hammer", athens, greece (ex brownhills walsall and proud of my midlands connection)

Thanks a lot Hatley. I'm a new driver and struggling with the reversing.i have watched many videos and by far your one is the best. You have saved a Amazon building having a HGV going through its walls 😂

Thanks for this Hayley. I'm in the system of the HGV Driver Bootcamp, waiting to upgrade to a C+E license. The reversing of trailers is what has always daunted me about previously upgrading to a C+E(as well as the cost)

Good info for starting HGV drivers!!! But no vlog,book,teacher or school can teach it like actually doing it.... one learns with experience!! One thing I’ld like to mention.... when manouvring: Open the windows. Switch of the radio. No distractions like cellphone or talking passengers. To me these are also applicable when driving in busy traffic with pedestrians and cyclists (they are the truckers’ biggest worries!!!) I wish you and everyone else safe and joyous journeys.... Driving HGV to me is one of the nicest ways of making a living!!!! Kind Regards,Henk,Dedemsvaart,the Netherlands.

Hayley you’re an absolute star for making this, I passed my class 1 last week 22nd of Oct and I’m just awaiting my licence back form the DVLA to then do my CPC, I’m very excited and a tad nervous about starting my new career as a HGV driver. Reversing is most definitely the main aspect of driving professionally that I am worried about, as you know, the HGV course doesn’t mimic a reverse in an RDC or service station which I think it should moving forward, I’m going to watch this video time and time again to study the art of reversing and soon enough be able to put it into practice, thanks again :)

Wish I'd seen this yesterday, would be delivering parcels tonight. Couldn't get it on that bay between two trailers for love nor money in that distribution centre, plus my test time for the job was midnight, think I drew the short straw there. Thanks Hayley gonna ring and ask for another go at it 👍

Great Tips and tricks about reversing in this video Hayley, ive done 4 class 1 lessons and been struggling with the reverse around the corner. My instructor doesnt really give any hints or tips like this about steering during the reverse, he just tells me im doing it wrong 😂
