Another great review! I bought my 2018 ZR2 3 years and 50k miles ago based on a review you did with TFL. I was considering a Tacoma TRD Pro but had dismissed it after reading and watching reviews and comparisons favoring the ZR2. I want to thank you for your honest reviews and not favoring badges. Car guys enjoy vehicles for the way they perform and handle what is thrown at them, not because of what company makes it. I have made so many lifelong memories with my friends and family with this truck. It has never gotten stuck, has pulled several stuck vehicles (snow), towed over max capacity, hauled way over max payload, and has never let me down. It's been off roaded and jumped several times and has handled everything I have thrown at it with ease and grace. It hasn't been perfect, it had 2 shocks, 4wd shift actuator, and a/c blend actuator replaced under warranty. These things were replaced while it was in for oil changes, so I've never been inconvenienced. During a recent snow storm in PA, I helped fellow motorists get unstuck. I locked both diffs and had full confidence in pulling anything. There's no other vehicle I would have rather been in. I hope to make many more memories with my ZR2. Sorry for the book. It's the long way of saying: My family and I thank you for the recommendation and honest reviews!

@@wipatriot510 Perhaps I should have been more clear...I have wanted one since I first saw the package. I owned two S-10s. A 1985 with 2.5ltr Iron Duke and a 1989 2.8ltr. The 85 was my first ever vehicle on my own. 2 months after I graduated HS. The old 89 had the engine removed and replaced with a 327-350 with a Ford 9inch rear end. My father in-law had an auto salvage yard and was a playground for me. The ZR2 was, well, is still one of my favorite looking and performing packages for me. 700 miles on it now, and I take out back on the 90+ acreage here in Maine. No regrets.

I would love to see someone get their hands on a ZR2 with the long travel shocks and suspension, just to see what changes. GM oughta throw one together and send it out, the lack of ground clearance is the truck's achilles' heel and who knows, maybe they could move even more if more people knew they sold a long travel suspension kit for the truck.

I am glad you mentioned the lack of towing mirrors. In the 80s, I remember that some 1/2 ton trucks had large rectangular towing mirrors and I still love the look of rectangular mirrors. It is annoying that these automotive manufacturers are bragging about how much their trucks can tow but do not offer a trailer mirror as an option. If you want a trailer mirror you have to buy an aftermarket mirror and install it yourself. If the towing package doesn't come with factory towing mirrors and a trailer brake controller then when you receive your truck it isn't set up to tow safely and more importantly legally then what is the point of the Towing Package? I know you guys have said before that the trailer brake controller should be standard equipment on a truck with the towing package, but the lack of towing mirrors is also a big oversight by the manufacturer. I have towed trailers in city traffic, and without trailer mirrors, you can't see the outside edge of the trailer fenders, and it makes navigation in tight spaces dangerous. If you can't see the outside edge of your trailer or load, you don't know how close your trailer is to other vehicles and could cause an accident if you misjudge the amount of clearance.

Man, I'd love to see you review one of the Rocky Ridge Silverado's (2019). I have one with the 5.3 and have taken it on some minor off road excursions, but I'd like to see someone who can really beat on it before I decide to do so to mine, lol.

I'm always back and forth about the switchable front locker. If you're going straight, it's wonderful, but you can't really steer with it on. Then there's also the aspect of having to switch it on and off while trying to pay attention to what you're doing (usually with a rear locker you can turn it on and forget about it off road). I tend to prefer either an autolocker on the front, or a torsen. Just so that you can still steer modulating power, or when you inevitably get a wheel off the ground. I lean more towards a torsen as it is in fact a differential all the time and not either open diff or spool. You can tap the brake to get the torsen to lock up enough to get power to the grounded wheel. That being said, it at least has some sort of front differential device.
@Dnh-Bear3 жыл бұрын
But I think I would want something better than the G80 in the front, something way more responsive.
@BeanoNoir3 жыл бұрын
@@Dnh-Bear The G80 wouldn't be that great of an option in the front not because of the responsiveness, but because it might break your wrist and/or your inside CV axle when it locks up and you are full power half turned in. For all the racket they make, Detroits and Grizzlys at least have some give. G80s are a neat clock work, but the new Infinite variable hydraulic LSDs will end up being a more elegant option for that crowd. But those are all expensive, so most will still run a device that costs $800 or less. Lunchbox is also a good option for around $3-400. I do find it odd that they didn't put a front Torsen on the Ranger Tremor like they did with the Super Dutys. The Ranger is 100% dana, so it isn't for lack of an existing supplier.
@Dnh-Bear3 жыл бұрын

I like the exterior of this truck. I recently bought a ranger not 4wd. The 4cly and interior of the colorado in the same price range is lackluster to say the least. If I wanted to spend more money maybe the colorado would have been it. The ZR2 is pretty cool. If ford wants to compete they'll have to step up their game and not over price it because they put a raptor sticker on it. I wonder if the 4.3L would have been a better option for this at 285hp and 308ft/tq

It's a great truck. But I think you are selling it a little short. It's a good rock crawling truck too. Add some metal guards for the rear shocks and no problem. The diesel is perfect for overland trails too. I live on Vancouver Island and we have thousands of KM on back logging roads. The diesel shines there. I've put around 5000km on a diesel Z71 Colorado . I really enjoyed driving it. I would have bought one if it could tow my trailer. Ended up with a trail boss instead.

I know my Honda was 80% North American (mostly Ohio and some parts from Canada) with the 20% being the drive train from Japan. When I was shopping for a new auto I was shocked to find the "American" made cars were 80% or more China and Mexico. I wish they'd show the country of origin percentages.
