I can’t believe the number of parts that go into a transmission, and how complicated it is, you would think technology would reduce car parts and making cars less complicated. These guys deserve the respect & appreciation equal to doctors , engineers, etc , mechanics are way under appreciated

I have to tell you Truckmaster I have watched this video about a dozen times and this gentleman who does this rebuild is like an artist of the highest caliber. I am not joking when I say I would drive in my 05 GMC truck (Duramax of course) from Georgia to Wisconsin to drink some beer and maybe buy him a steak dinner. I love to watch someone do something with the kind of expertise and precision Mark does. He is in the “masters class” of his craft. Perhaps one day I will meet him. Thank you for posting this video! I have seen many tutorials and this guy just plain knows his shit. Usually the guy presenting this much material bores the viewer to sleep. Not this guy. Very knowledgeable, very sharp to all of the things that can go wrong and will if you dont watch this video. Or if you have not all ready made all of the mistakes and learned from them. Most of the people who make the small mistakes that lead to failure seldom understand what they did wrong to cause their failure. This makes it a lot more difficult to learn from your mistakes when you dont know what they were. This tutorial has to be one of the best at calling out all of the common mistakes the first timer is bound to make. Very well done. I really hope to see more of these tutorial videos for other types of transmissions. The presenter was able to make his points in a way that made the viewer pay attention. This was an absolute professional at work and it showed.. I wasnt bored one second. You didnt waste time showing stuff you didnt need to and you made all of your points very clear and easy to understand.

I have a brother in law who is at this level of skill and has been building automatics since his teens, although he may not specialize as much in the Allisons. He has built a bunch of them and really likes them. He also builds many antique units from all over the Eastern US. This builder reminds me so much of him. And their shop is always jam packed with waiting jobs.

This guy is amazing. I’ve seen several builds on the Allison but no one makes it look so easy. You almost forget that the automatic transmission is one of the most complex devices ever invented. One misplaced part will render the entire unit to nothing more than a worthless brick of metal. However, I was disappointed when the milk crate was sent packing. When my 01’hits 300k and the engine comes out for a rebuild, the transmission is getting shipped to this shop. Great video on a true master of his craft!

I have an 03 with an Allison as well and there's no way I could rebuild it. I worked at a diesel shop but I was a welder/fabricator and autobody specialist and painter. I did do some basic diesel repair work as well but nothing to serious, I did know enough to do all the repair work on my own vehicles. Word to the wise even though your a diesel mechanic transmissions are a totally different game, there's a reason they have shops dedicated to fixing only transmissions, no offense intended. Me and my buddy both who know quite a bit about mechanical work tried to rebuild a 3 speed Turbo 350 transmission and it took us 6 tries to get everything right before we were successful and even after that when we put the assembly back into the bellhousing 2 of the 6 bolts in the bellhousing stripped even though we torqued them to spec so the transmission leaked fluid constantly. If I were you I'd let a professional rebuild your transmission or just buy a new one, thats what I plan to do since my truck has a lot of performance parts and is running 400+hp and I need a transmission that can handle that kind of power!

Man, transmissions have always been the scary part of cars to me. I’ve rebuilt engines and many other parts. Worked in a fab and tuning shop for 3 years. A trans always has been something I avoid at all costs. This didn’t necessarily make me feel confident in doing this rebuild myself. But it did make me know I need to send my trans to Kodiak when it goes!

It's about understanding what it's designed to do, what we want it to do, what it used to do, what it didn't ever do, then. how to make it do. Then, finally, ultimately, how to eliminate the weak link; clear that ID-10-T error code behind the tiller assembly. Great job, Grasshopper, bullet proof. What we've done here; pushed that driveline failure to a less expensive more easily accessible area; slip yoke, u-joint, ring and pinion, axle spline... ;)

As an engineer and amateur mechanic, I agree that both the design of the thing and the ability to tear it down and rebuild are, at first glance, mind blowing and humbling. However, at least on the design side, keep in mind a couple things. One, no one person designs something with this level of detail. Obviously it is a team of people, most of whom have a very narrow scope- all they worry about is a specific component in a specific section of the transmission, and don't need to know or worry about much that goes on outside of that. Of course I'm sure there are technical experts within Allison that have a remarkable amount of knowledge of how the whole thing works, even they likely can't design things at the component level to create a working modern transmission from scratch. Second, keep in mind that what we are seeing is the result of 60 years of design evolution and iteration. It's not like someone, or even a large team of people, sat down one day with a blank sheet of paper and designed this from first principles. Rather, they were starting with a huge amount of proven knowledge and design history that they could refine and build upon for a specific application. That makes the design side a little easier to swallow. This guy tearing this thing down and reassembling from memory, though- that's just witchcraft.

Invaluable info, you know as i watched this entire video. I thought how much more useful this video alongside a mechanic how to book. I remember back in the day, one could head to a Mechanic parts store and go to their book rack, find your vehicle truck or car by date and model and BAM most everything was there that you needed to get greasy in your garage or driveway. But a video, TONS MORE USEFUL, eliminates a lot of guessing. Sry, no, I do not drive a Allison trans truck, but I watched anyway, they are popular enough transmissions to warrant a closer look, and this guys such a pro, very clear spoken easy to keep up with.👍 Great video and happy new year 2021!

Dude your videos are some of the most helpful videos on here but this one blows everything else out of the water. I learned more in an hour of this video then I learned in 2 years of technical college for heavy duty truck repair. Nice job🤘

I spent from 1994 to 2014 in Various GM dealers and had many, many transmissions apart but never an Allison. We just never seen them fail other then NSBU switches. The size of that park pawl is incredible! I remember when these first came out GM said that the park pawl in the LCT1000 was designed to hold the full GVW of the vehicle plus a trailer at the max tow rating of the vehicle. I thought that thing must have been big but it is a huge chunk of steel along with the pin.

i like how you take about the pump because i did blow one up with 8k on it... but the spacer on the inter shaft i feel you left out the lube oil passage that should be keyed for better oil flow, over all a great video!!! i def. could have used this 6 years ago on my first and my second!!! Goerend stuff has never done me wrong happy to see there stuff still doing what it does, living!!

I always marvel at how much though, and trial and error that went into designing certain mechanical components.

You can see this engineer (Mark) has a lot of experience and using a flat screwdriver to make sure the c clip has been seated is something I and many engineers do.....great job.

I'm not a diesel guy but an Attorney and an A&P IA airplane mechanic on the weekends. I found this video very interesting but also scared for owning a truck with a diesel engine. I would think it's quite expensive. Great video!!
