True Bis Does Not Matter in Wrath

In this video, I go over why bis lists can be very misleading in wrath due to the increase in both quality and quantity of items. With so many options, many slots end up with several items with identical output.

The difference in DPS is 0.04%. the items are interchangeable. You instantly became a welcomed person to watch. It's been getting very tiring with everyone shouting "only this is best!"

in some item slots in some tiers it is true, but yes in many cases there is no "bis" and people that reee about it are silly. This is why loot council is best (assuming you have sensible ppl and it's not corrupt), so you don't have clowns with a 213 weap rolling on another 213 weap that's marginally better meanwhile the poor other guy rolling has a 200 still.

This is always really important to keep an eye on if you are on a LC as well. Some raiders will consider any upgrade a big upgrade and others will sit on old gear forever because they don't want to be "greedy".

The problem with bis lists for half the player base is they have no idea how to make their own decisions. Ive seen people give up hit/arp/exp caps etc because a new item they got was "bis" despite the fact its actually going to be a dps loss until you have another piece to cover that stat. I have always thought this way, that a lot of items have items that are close enough that it doesn't really matter it is the absolute best. Took a lot of flack through classic and tbc, for having the second or third best item in a slot. BiS and pre bis should be lists of items, not just single items. You did a great job showing this.

They've been this way forever. There is a BIS and optional items on every list I've ever used. But in vanilla there is often only 1 choice that's head and shoulders above others (ie lionheart helm). By wrath it's more about item level than anything.

The list I used on wowhead throughout TBC had multiple BiS options. And in Vanilla for tanking espeically, there was a lot of flexibility on mitigation vs. threat items to fill the gear slot. I usually just went with whatever I could get my hands on or was the easiest to obtain.

Man, this is so helpful. I played a small amount of wrath back in the day and been playing retail ever since. There's like 1 item for you in each slot as Plate wearer's doesn't wear leather/mail etc. But after playing 1 year of TBC recently, I've found it pretty hard figuring out what gear pieces are like close to the best(except looking at a "BIS-List". So this'll make my choices way easier as I know the small change between item to item, will most likely be so small that it isn't really even worth swapping. Great video! Thanks alot!

This is how I always used to pump numbers and gear ahead of the curve, bis is a suggestion not a mandatory performance check, so while others were waiting and squabbling I got the interchangeable item and slammed out the dps, and saved for that true massive upgrade. Great video and context.

BiS lists have never mattered outside of a op trinket or gear with something on it that made the spec. Even 10 dps upgrades in tbc, you won't notice the difference because human error accounts for the biggest dps loss/gain.

This is literally what I did in TBC as well, it is so smart to do as a DPS since everything is so highly contested, so I feel content getting an item 0.000000000000002% worse than BIS but that is not as well known.

You make a great point in this vid. Personally I would never roll need on an item that was on my BiS list when I have a similar/near equal item and I have a guildy using a blue or worse a green. Also after 2months of naxx runs 2 clears a week u should have all the gear u want and an offspec set built. And most likely alt carrying by that point

Edit: also to add there r some rare cases when an “equal” item isn’t really equal. Best example is a tank item with block rating/value. That item would be useless to a DK tank. Unless it’s best they can get and u don’t want to shard it. I hate seeing useable gear being sharded

true alot items for healing that are listed as prebis are not as good as the creators of those lists make them to be. Id rather go for the kirin tor spirit ring for example over the haste, because you cant heal without mana. Also being skilled at healing means you dont need the haste if you know perfectly well when to heal and when you expect them to take small or big damage.

i help with the LC typically so i try to advise everyone to take a worldly view as much as possible. Biggest relative upgrades or really apparent class advantages might typically have the most weight up front but after that I really appreciate people realizing that getting the most high ilvl upgs on people as possible helps the most rather than anyone trying to double down on hyper min max pieces (like the .04% you mentioned here). Like you brought up with the tanking chest “maybe this one if you need more defense” the BIS lists are created to compliment the other pieces of said list. So say for melee you’re getting all the minimum hit/exp pieces, while maximizing your AP/crit depending on build. So if you swap out an exp piece for a crit one because it’s half a %worse and easier to get, you’re losing expertise that is required for cap, losing your ability to essentially hit the mob. At the end of the day 90% of pieces of higher difficulty bosses and raids will be better than their previous counterparts, that’s only in a bubble not considering what is too little or too much to do your characters basic functions.

To an extend it has always been like this. I appreciate your effort Zatar, but the the majority of classic Andys are just way too lazy to use a sim. Source: Been on LC for the whole of TBC in a semi-hc guild. Even a lot of the more tryhard players often have no clue what's their 2nd BIS or even temporary upgrades. We literally had to force people to take some upgrades cause they initially passed on them and it would have gone to OS/DE; just because it wasn't on their BIS list. I don't even wanna go into different ways to itemize your char like using hit on bracers instead of the belt for example. I wanna be optimistic, but I sadly don't see it happening. I would love to be proved wrong though.

You're correct that uptime and APM is important but gear is equally as important if you are trying to parse. In phases 3 & 4 I got geared out extremely fast. By the first month of release I was the most geared Enh in the world and was a top 30 parser. This tier I didn't get geared out as fast any my rank dropped a lot. Once I got gear I started creeping up in the ranks again.

I can recall alot of issues in Wrath with massive levels of expertise on certain items, just one example. If your BiS list revolves around one such item you going to be screwed. I picked up an inevitable defeat as Fury off trash. Huge upgrade, but I was facing gemming expertise to cap if I replaced it without finding another expertise piece first.

Most players don't even have a proper keybind setup, they have bindings all over the keyboard. You should have a setup where you dont have to move your hand in the slightest to touch a key, or your'e losing more DPS. I really dont know how people can play without a 12 bind mouse where you can have 36 abilties/buttons under one thumb. Its not about these tiny DPS increases from gear but more from rotation, movement and actual physical equipment you play with.

These are good points but you also should look at hit rating etc. People come up with BIS lists but I've seen these lists all consist of cherry picked items for each slot and they assume you will get your hit rating from other items. Except since the items are all picked individually instead of as a whole set, you don't. I still want to look at BIS lists but then realizing that there's more work to double check and make sure it really is BIS - for me.

You are making alot of sense for those examples except for the tanks, if you are tanking alot of mobs that don't hit too hard you'd want the block rating items most likely for 5mans or aoe tanking trash in raids etc, but for bosses i am sure the dodge/parry is much better stat then block rating, block rating and block value have almost been almost useless for bosses in any expansion, i guess you could make the argument in wotlk if your raid has insane pumpers, block rating ( gives block chance + value) is esentially threat, but you WILL take more damage with block gear compared to pure mit gear ( parry/dodge)

The argument would be to just never use block rating gear because dungeons are a joke. I personally will experiment with gear regardless of if matters in the completion of the content just for fun. Threat being much easier to manage in wrath makes gearing very basic, you can just gear for pure survivability.

The point you are making is what I’ve always told my guildies…just because a BiS list says it’s BiS, it may not be true. You basically need all the pieces they list to make it true, you may never get that, so you really need to pay attention to your rolls, sometimes you roll on an item and can’t use it until you replace something else due to the stat change…sometimes let someone else win a big upgrade

I'd like to see the sim's settings. You took a bracer off with hit rating and replaced it with a bracer without. Shouldn't you lose DPS if doing so put you under hit rating? Makes me think the sim settings + the rest of your loadout is over hit cap for whatever interaction is being simmed.

You are completely right. IF you go under hit cap it's a dps loss, but the point in this video is to show that there are so many alternatives to a BiS list, so many variants to items in WotLK which are so close to "BiS". If he replaces the bracers with the hit rating and he goes under the hit cap, he should of course find the hit rating somewhere else. A lot of items has gem slots, so it's really easy to gem the required hit rating needed instead of going for 1 list of BiS items. I hope that summorized it :)

I actually think this was how it was in TBC as well, for most classes. There were important breakpoints (example - armor pen) that you needed to reach but that didn't mean you'd stack all the armor pen you could. So it was really important to sim your gear constantly and see what was an upgrade for that moment in time.

"BiS" is somewhat subjective & may result in poor mana-regen/longevity & other specific shortcomings related to your particular spec, & might not even be particularly synergistic with your particular spec/aim if you are venturing outside of the strict e-sport parsing mentality. I get that SOME people would do that, there are always top end guilds, but why the fuck does everyone sudden;y think they're from Method just because it's not retail?

I remember mentioning somewhere that I want to play an undead warrior, for the aesthetic of the class and because I don't care this much about minute stat boosts being an orc could give me with that pitiful amount of axe expertise the race comes with. I got comments that I should pick orc anyway, because those five points of expertise apparently make a huge difference "later on" as it allows for more crit gems. (which is nonsense, since crit caps are easy to achieve with ToC-level gear already and flat slotting armour penetration or strength in all gem slots would yield more of an effect than colour coding gems for socket bonuses anyway) Videos like this are why I do not care to listen to min-maxing munchkins - I do what I like doing, play characters I like playing and if somebody demands a full BiS, full synergy build to invite me to a raid, they're not a person I want to be led by anyhow.
