Seriously he doesn't seem like a bad guy and I don't think he should be in prison. He had the opportunity to take the lives of a handful of men, but they changed their mind, didn't want to be killed and eaten, and he respected them and their wishes. He has a fetish which I find very messed up, however, he has morals, and would only carry out his desires with someone who was completely consensual.

Because if they are mentally ill, as most people would see them as, they can't consent or be a willing participant in this act. I think at least one of the two, if not both, are mentally ill.

He's also called 'Der Kannibale von Rothenburg'. It's nice he got consent from the victim. The problem is, that anyway to obtain "the meat" is illegal or punishable here - the Cannibalism in itself isn't. We're obligated to call emergency services if we know someone is about to kill themselves or is hurt. If we don't respond to an accident or when someone announcing suicide, it's punishable by fines or even prison. So the victim couldn't just off himself and have Armin colle t the meat. Then he would be punished for not helping and desecration. The only legal workaround would be if you have an appendage amputated. But even then hospitals aren't allowed to give it to you. The court also said that the victim was so masochistic and suicidal that he was not able to consent.

Honestly I don’t think it makes a difference that the victim consented. He could have been mentally ill and with therapy could have had a different mindset. When you have a person who is suicidal and someone convince them that taking their life is the only thing to do, they are seen as doing something very wrong for giving that advice to someone having a hard time and I feel like it’s a similar situation.

He was very polite and considerate. Although it could be argued that baron must have had some type of mental problem to want to be eaten. And Armin too I guess. I don’t feel he poses a risk to community as he did allow them to change their minds (the ones who back out) in a caring and respectful way. I guess the German authorities figured it wasn’t a risk worth taking. If only it were the same for child abusers!

It's about competence. Rational people capable of making even-keeled, mature adult decisions just don't look for another rational thinking adult to kill/eat them. "Consent" isn't possible for SOME folks, if we're being honest about this.

This is a slippery slope. What are the parameters that would justify removing someone's right to their own consent? Just saying, the people described in the story seemed to be capable of rational thinking in other areas of their lives. They just had a *very* peculiar "kink". Without consent, some forms of BDSM are torture. If we change the wording to "Rational people don't want to be hogtied and whipped", it turns into a totally different argument. Further, would we go on to say people with mental handicaps cannot provide consent? Playing a bit of devil's advocate here, but outside parties deciding who is capable of giving consent is more dangerous to humanity than cannibals.

@@erika2995 this was the argument I made. I don't personally want to be killed and eaten but at long as it's got consent then I can't say that anyone's legal fetish should be the laws business.( I don't even want to get into other things but for example an animal can never consent so if someone's fetish is to have sex with an animal then that will always be illegal. The law has to get involved there. ) But a adult human can consent to acts and should be allowed to consent to acts. And as long as that consent is documented then I think that should be considered. I do think it should be, in the case of something this extreme, documented and planned much more officially (because in a perfect world it's legal and can be done that way) to ensure there's nothing shady. But what consenting adults do really isn't our business.

Agreed. Obviously animals and children cannot give consent. I think my big issue is that we don't have the right to start nitpicking who is of sound mind to give consent. That is part of the reason I'll never support human euthanasia. All it takes is a greedy kid with power of attorney (therefore making decisions for, ie consenting) for grandma to pay off a doctor. Now if you are in a ton of pain or just want to tap out of life, I won't judge you. BUT, someone else being given the final say is opening the door to "tidying up", if you catch my drift.

@@erikapitts4272 I do support euthanisa because there's already the ability for family to "pull the plug" so to speak in many ways. Euthanisa would only really be used in cases where someone has a clear frame of mind and can say "I do or don't want this". If someone is not able to consent then their family unfortunately already has that control over them

I believe Armin did nothing wrong. He didn't have a victim. He had a willing participant. I believe everyone has a right to die. If someone wants to be eaten I don't see the problem with someone else aiding them in their pursuits. That's just me and my opinion. Don't come for me.
