This shows that she deserved it. People don't just become selfish scumbags overnight. What she did to rust shows she puts herself before and above all else. In 17 years with marty there is not a single chance that this personality trait didn't rear its head from time to time. She is selfish, egotistical and heartless and people like that don't deserve happiness. Marty is a scumbag too, but that doesn't mean that people should feel sorry for maggie.

It was crappy, no doubt, But let's not pretend that wasn't a grown ass man in his thirties deciding to sleep with his friend's wife. It hurt him because he was really in love with her , and she e was only reciprocating because of how horrible Marty was. That IS awful. But we can't exactly pretend that matthew mcconaughey is a victim here either. That's part of why the scene is so good and an example of the writing in this series. Nobody comes out with their hands completely clean or is just a good or bad person. They are all really complicated and all do bad things
@tonyc73013 жыл бұрын
I certainly understand she wanted to get back at Marty and most would say she was entitled to do that. Also, she felt a connection to Rust and knew this would hurt Marty far more than sleeping with a stranger. But she really hurt Rust badly with this move. He gets in a fight with Marty, quits the police right when he had realized there was still another killer out there, becomes a drunk and lost whatever semblance of a life he had. She did him wrong plus more people died because the killer remained free ten more years.

What makes this so shitty, aside from the fact that she used him, was their chemistry was genuinely building up in the episodes before this. I get her character was mad at Marty, but she chose to ruin everything they had built over the past seven years (1995 - 2002) for one little bout of revenge.
@metsrus11 ай бұрын
Both Maggie and Rust had high emotional intelligence and it was why they got along so well operating mostly on the same wavelength. However because Maggie was so damaged from her relationship with Marty, she needed to prove to herself that deep down all men are the same. Even someone like Rust who was the perfect knight and had the integrity, strength, intelligence and awareness, was capable of doing something morally culpable as banging his friend's wife. Besides it being a plan for revenge, maybe it was an avenue for her to lessen the hate for her husband as she moves on.

I don't think Maggie used him for sex in this scene. There was clearly romantic tension ever since Rust first had dinner with Martin's family. Even Martin could sense that tension ever since he caught Rust over to help Maggie mow their front lawn. They clearly both wanted an intimate relationship but buried the desire deep within themselves. But finally Maggie had enough of Martin's cheating and got her lick back by letting in on her desire with Rust. If Rust truly didn't want it then he wouldn't have been so passionate with her. The only reason he got angry with her at the end is because he knew it would only end in disaster, which *spoiler alert* it did. However, I am disappointed in Maggie for going straight home and telling Martin all about it as a way of regaining her power in their broken marriage. If she were smarter then she would've either said nothing or divorced Martin right then and there.
@tonyc730110 ай бұрын
The reason she told Marty was because she had tried to leave him seven years before and he pursued her relentlessly instead of accepting it. In this case her goal was to have Marty want to leave. She knew that fucking Rust would accomplish that, and it did.
@sammyreider95410 ай бұрын
@@tonyc7301 that's very true, but I don't think it's mutually exclusive with the fact that Rust and Maggie still desired each other nonetheless
@tonyc730110 ай бұрын
@@sammyreider954 For sure there was some attraction, but I think that is so secondary to the overall point of this scene. It is clear from what Maggie said that she was faithful to Marty (Up until this of course). Like she said: "17 years is a long time. I didn't even know if I could do it". She was a good woman that threw it all away to get Marty out of her hair. The fact she had a good connection to Rust was just a small icing on the cake. She wanted to Marty to leave and even more importantly, wanted to Marty to want to leave. Had Rust been Marty's pal and she had no attraction to him, she still would have picked him so that Marty would want to go. Another reason Rust is so pissed after he finishes with her is that Maggie was one of the very few people who ever got over on him.
@zdude1110 ай бұрын
I would go as far as to say Rust was raped here... he was drunk, emotionally unstable, and has never truly stopped seeking human attachment after his marriage, such that he longs for intimacy but also pushes himself away from it. The fact that she did it just to spite Marty, as well as causing a rift between them that took a decade to mend, makes it hurt all the more for Rust. Marty was his biggest ally for years, and his wife was someone who I would go as far as to say "understood" Rust, and she betrayed all of that just because Marty couldn't keep his hands off other women. Obviously this is a whole cascade of bullshit but it's really telling how much this messed him up.
@Thathumanoverthere17015 ай бұрын
@bbmb4by seducing/coercing a drunk person into sexual intercourse is rape. His reaction afterwards drives that home. Just because it's a man, doesn't mean it is consensual. If he was down with it before he got drunk, then I wouldn't say that was rape.

That's missing the point entirely! Rust was extremely detached from humanity, he had and was nothing except his work. Not one thing more than that. The 'world' was something he was in but not a part of. Knowing Marty and knowing his wife was a way of reconnecting with society, with people. He had trust in them, valued them, shared experiences with them. He was deeply attached and they amounted to his only faith in humanity. Maggie comes along and flat out seduces him while he's in a drunken stupor expressly to wound Marty as part of their marriage breakup thereby proving to Rust that people aren't meant for him and society isn't meant for him. It's after this one point where he gives up. Throws in the towel on the whole world. He gets so angry with her when he realises the deceit on Maggie's part and that his own worst fears/instincts of other people were right all along. As much as this was the end of Marty and Maggie's marriage it was also the end of Rusts attempt to become part of humanity again.
