He forgets to consider the unseen results of not purchasing a product. Say you buy chocolate that is produced from cheap labor, the individuals laboring to product the chocolate make some money (although not much), if you do not purchase the product the individuals make no money. If this happened on a massive scale it would get rid of an entire labor force's jobs, leaving them with nothing. Now if you can find a company that pays employees at a higher cost in the same general area and you purchase that product that would not be bad for the economy, although you might have to pay more which means you're going to be consuming less in other areas. The best way to increase labor value is to consume/purchase the products. This creates a higher demand, more companies want to get involved, they are forced to compete for labor, and the value of the labor increases.

So, this means that the workers in inhumane conditions should be grateful to us, western consumers? Because, if we wouldn't exploit them, they would be dying of hunger. I don't think so ...
