This is awesome!!!! I live in south Florida and have a few acres of land which I recently purchased to build my 3,500 sqft. home. I already planted a few fruit trees but I will try this method on my Mango trees. Thank you for educating me🤙🏼

Chris you are a great teacher as evidenced by the free flowing little points about looking for bumps and curves 👀 on scion are priceless and made so much sense. Tips on the fact that the tape won’t stick to anything but itself. Made me go 😱 ok. Then why to do a longer and a shorter side with the slices to the scion- amazed. Don’t put the elastic right like a tourniquet...I left this video feeling like I could do a graft. I’m growing some seeds from mangos I got outta Merritt Island and hope they will give me good enough rootstock for lemon meringue and Pickering scions I plan to buy from ya!! Please don’t forget the follow video on this and your cocktail tree graft project👏👏👏👏👍👍

Thanks for your positive comments! We have done a follow-up video on grafting onto young shoots. It's the 'Orange Sherbet Top Work Project Update' We will try to do an update on the cocktail tree soon.

I wanted to take a minute to say thank you. You demystify grafting, and make it look simple enough for us amateurs to give it a go. I am not new to fruit trees and edible plants, but have never tried grafting. Thanks to you videos and a few others, I have fifteen mango seedlings growing waiting to be grafted.

It would be nice if you give us a closer look of the cut on the shoot . So we can learn how deep we need to do it . Friendly subjestion. Thanks for the video.

I've done grafts on seedlings using soft wood and I've been successful. I've used grafting tape and stretched it so that it looks like string and after that I wrap it with parafilm.

After your graft takes, do you cut off the remainder of the "host" shoot just above the graft, or do you let them grow together?

How soon after you cut the tree to become a stump can U expect shoots. I realize this can vary with the season, but more or less???

Very educational video, i wonder if you can use this method for a hybrid for other types of plants such as house plants or outdoor flowering plants, id like to try it just to see what may happen, or not happen just for the fun of it. :)

Could you cut half of the shoot off then do a top "wedge" type graft on the shoot instead of the side of the shoot?

Hi Chris, I grafted four different varieties onto my mature tree and it's been about two weeks now. I haven't seen any new buds perse but the scions are still green on the bottom half and brownish on the top. Should I make a slit on the grafting tape on the top to let them breath?

sometimes the top part of the scion dies, but the lower part will eventually sprout out when the bottom of the scion is green, there's hope

new subscriber, thank you, Ms. Zell. your quite a good teacher. My newly planted Ma-Ha-Chanook is only less than two feet high. It is grafted, and I am wondering if I should cut it back to make it wide and short, at this stage. It seems to have lost its "rush". On both stems where the leaves are maturing at the very tip where there should be green, there's dried debris, what I would call the crown. Thank you again for sharing your expertise.
@TrulyTropical
@TrulyTropical 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subscribing! As for your question, it depends on what your vision for the tree is. If you would like it to be short and bushy, then cut it back. You could also 'tip' the new leaves to encourage more growth and branching.

Thank you so much, great video!! How do you feel about air-layering ? And also from rooting cuttings, i’ve seen a lot of KZbin videos on people who have successfully rooted cuttings, after a few weeks in A humid environment they show signs of sprouting but I’ve never seen them show the roots, and if so with this tree bear fruit and be successful as a clone?

Chris has also heard of people planting groves or ones for cutting. Here we need the tap root to anchor the tree especially during hurricane season.

Great video. Im just wondering where you get your budding tape from. In australia i think it might have a different name. Budding tape here is just grafting tape. Horrible hard stuff.
@TrulyTropical

Buddy Tape is somewhat new on the market. It's made by a Japanese company, so it seems very likely that it would be available in Australia.

I HAVE a question? must the heart of graft rest on the heart of the receiving plant?
@robertgreenwalddvm
@robertgreenwalddvm 5 жыл бұрын
There is no heart, and I am sure U did not mean that. What U must do is match cambium to cambium, and so it is best if the scion and the rooted plant have the same diameter, but it will also work if U just match one side if the two R not of equal size.The cambium R those cells just below the bark

With the OS being so young, is if fair to assume that taking these cuttings will not affect the original tree's growth?
@jaydoug1973
@jaydoug1973 6 жыл бұрын
The Grateful Gardner it actually encourages branching. Watch Dr. Campbell's tips on pruning. He calls it tipping.

Jay Doug I've watched his videos, didn't realize you started this process when the trees are so small. Thought they had to be larger.
@jaydoug1973
@jaydoug1973 6 жыл бұрын
The Grateful Gardner it won't hurt the tree or it's growth as long as it's above the original graft and you have buds left above the original graft. After that it's more of a preference when and where you want your tree to start branching. I encourage branching at just over two feet tall. It helps keep fruit within reach and height more manageable.
