Hyperbole is exaggeration, and exaggeration entails at least some degree of truthful core to the statement; "It was raining buckets" is not hyperbole if it was not raining *at all* because then it is simply a lie. By the same token, it is simply a lie to call someone a liar when they speak the truth; there is nothing rhetorical about it. A lie is a lie, it's not a means of conveying thoughts and opinions as in the case of, for instance, rhetorical question ("do you *see* a truck parked there?"), rather a lie is a tool for misrepresenting reality and deceiving any listeners. It is a crutch in politics that should be rather more harshly regulated, unless we want to keep bringing in politicians who never mean most of what they say. The issue lies in that, if the judge allowed this to proceed forward, ANY insinuation of less than stellar character in political discourse could be considered defamation, silencing most political discourse. What you said about the judge, and about Kavanaugh, would be fair game for them to sue you for defamation. I don't like Trump, but the judge made the right call, especially since Cliffords, through Avenatti, has become established to some degree as a political rival of Trump. This is just one specific defamation suit, as well. It's not the NDA suit that's the primary lawsuit that has been allowed to go forward

I disagree, although you make a lot of fair points. I think there's a difference between not letting the case continue and ruling there was no defamation. I also think there was no defamation, but that's not the point. The key point of argument is the normalization part. There is a difference between accusing someone of lying, etc. and just arbitrarily adding liar to the list of insults used against someone. As I said, I don't think that case was defamation, but tossing it out without looking sends the message that you can make up whatever you want with no repercussions. If most political discourse is just accusations and insults, it's not even political discourse worth having.
