@@fritzhaselnuss7852 He was allowed to lie, because news outlets wanted entertainment, so they let him ramble. They knew that if they pushed back, he would skip out and they'd lose their access to him. They did everyone a disservice in exchange for ratings. Trump's nonsense should have been smothered out like a fire. Everyone should have harshly shut him down, condemning every word out of his mouth in the process, giving him no platforms to spread his filth.

@@Helvetica_Scenario That's the story of his life. People let him get away with things because it was useful for them to do so at the moment. He was never really taken seriously, because everyone knew him to be joke casting by through his daddy's money the way trust fund babies always do. Except we've reached a point in time where people you can't take seriously somehow reach high offices with the power to screw up your life. He's basically the answer to the question, "Oh, let him be, let's indulge him this once, what's it gonna hurt?"

When I first started listening to NPR, I had someone tell me he can't stand listening to it because every time he turns on the radio, NPR is "only playing from the left." (It was a stereo joke.) That caught me QUITE by surprise, because they seemed so staunchly fair and unemotional about the news. The commentary might have some opinion, but even that is reserved, and reflects more the natural societal lean toward progressivism than any sort of liberal political alignment. Heck, at least my local station (and I assume probably many or most or all of them) play news clips not only from domestic sources, but the BBC as well. How do you get any more unbiased than having news reports from those who don't actually have a dog in this fight at all? After years of hearing news, commentary, and even represented debate (e.g. Left, Right, and Center), the cable news channels are embarrassingly _not_ neutral, and tend to outright tell their viewers how to feel more often than just telling the story and letting people digest it however they will. I really wish more people would listen to NPR.

Would that it were so. If the GOP doesn't pull the trigger in their ongoing coup (replacing state election officials with 45 zealots, voter suppression, extreme gerrymandering, etc) this year (and they may well do so), they are definitely going to do so for 45 in 2024. If it looks like he's winning, it'll be fine, but as soon as he looks to lose, they'll declare fraud based on nothing and appoint their own people. Not really anything to stop them.

I don't think even the Republicans believe what Trump says, but they do believe that if they keep saying that they believe it, everyone else has an obligation to treat them and what they say with respect, even though it's a lie and they have bad intentions. They're trying to use people's impulses to treat all viewpoints with respect to push their way, and they think that getting their way justifies that behavior.

Now, the vast majority of networks only care about their ratings and their profits. To hell with Joe Friday and his declarations of "Just the facts, ma'am. Just the facts". I have been a listener of NPR for many years. Part of the reason is because the news IS trustworthy but they often cover other stories that are informative AND entertaining. In the mornings with Morning Edition and in the afternoons with All Things Considered, it is a regular part of how I stay informed - no matter where in the country I happen to be. I can’t decide whether it’s more helpful to see Trump squirm when presented with facts or to simply deny him a platform altogether.
@cam4636
@cam4636 2 жыл бұрын
Helpful? Denying him a platform, absolutely. All publicity is good publicity--every time his name gets mentioned, someone will remember him but not the context of him being an idiot who tries to kill everyone around him. Fun, though? They should lock him in a chair and make him answer questions like an interrogation scene in an old detective movie.
@mickcollins1921
@mickcollins1921 2 жыл бұрын
Neither. The MAGA crowd will follow him to the depths of hell to hear what he has to say and the rest of us only listen to him to mock him, so de-platforming is useless. And the MAGA crowd calls anyone who makes diaper donnie sad a communist-terrorist-socialist so making him squirm is also useless. Either one is essentially masturbation for the sane and stable. So, do whichever one is more your kink.

@Scott Leishman It just shows how truly unpopular Trump is. His supporters loved the fact that he pissed a lot of people off, but were then completely shocked that he lost. My Republican parents didn't particularly like Biden, but they hated Trump and felt bad about just not voting in 2016. They voted this time. They voted for a democrat. Because Trump was worse in their opinion.
