A very definitive presentation and discussion, and I am pleased to pass it along. As a 78 year old, psychologist/mindfulness coach --I'm all too aware of the ageism that also attends the issues we face. It's helpful to hear Gartner's explanation to share with older folks in general. Thank you for helping lots of people get better educated.

For sure. I'm 62, and either extreme stress or something else sometimes makes me struggle, but for sure I'm more effective at my job than I was 30 years ago.

Great interview. Dr. Gartner brings light to some key observations concerning those in authority, age, and ageism. People are living longer now, and so these concerns are going to stay with us rather than disappear. I truly hope that these discussions continue to be made and that people continue to speak out in a environment that is accepting and free of fear.

This is true for the country at large--businesses will have to deal with an aging workforce esp at the top where bodies continue but brains are vulnerable. If seniors could job share and cut hours, work there way out of the workforce gradually...they wouldn't be free-loading on pension funds and social security while still capable of working, but they also wouldn't need to pull 100-hr took weeks and have company's well-being rest solely on their decisions. Transfer parts of jobs to others while retaining some duties... If those at the top (not the Presidency) set an example, it may spread, giving the next generation openings while allowing people to stay employed longer which many have said we need to do to cut costs after all their tax cuts...

Or you get tenure due to political reasons and coast for the rest of your life. Seen it too many times in academics.

@@suzbone " perhaps, but you couldn't keep the job for almost three decades without maintaining a high level of performance. AND publish research papers the whole time too!" In academics, after around 5 years you are up for tenure. If you get it you don't have to publish anything.

Excellent. Thank you both. I worked ground level with people with dementia for years and so much of what you say makes so much sense.
