Every time I hear a lawyer say, "We'll hold him accountable at the ballot box," I'm more and more convinced that our justice system is completely dysfunctional, if not irrevocably broken. It is NOT the duty of the voters to hold criminals accountable, and simply losing an election is NOT a proper consequence for a man convicted of multiple felonies, if he even loses at all. Sounds like we need to hold some judges accountable along with the criminal.

@@lyndamedley543 I see you're not adept at taking good advice, and decided to embarrass yourself further. But, that's what will continue to happen if you insist on getting your info from the purveyors of perpetual propaganda, aka the mainstream media. They lie, I don't. Trump was found liable for sexual assault in a civil court. Civil cases/courts DO NOT determine guilt or innocence, hence, they DO NOT convict or acquit. Convictions or acquittals are ONLY adjudicated in a criminal court where the standard of proof is much higher/"beyond a reasonable doubt", whereas a civil case only requires a “preponderance of the evidence" meaning it was more likely than not to have occurred as the plaintiff alleged. Trump was not even formally alleged, or charged to have committed any sexual abuse. Sexual abuse wasn’t even a liability alleged, nor was rape. Initially Carroll’s legal team alleged defamation. The only civil matter was defamation in regards to Trump saying he had never met the woman. They later added the battery allegation, not sexual misconduct, not sexual assault, not sexual abuse, nor any of the other 20 allegations of a sexual nature that could have been alleged. They didn’t even allege forcibly touching. Trump was not found guilty, or liable, for sexual abuse, sexual assault, or any other sexual crime of any kind. He was found liable of defamation and civil battery, which is a tort. Neither allegation constitutes criminal activity. As soon as you're done apologizing, go learn some FACTS.

If Trump loses the election, then I think the chances of him not going to prison are very low. He will continue to delay the cases with frivolous appeals. The documents case is solid and that would get him a minimum of a few years if not more. The other cases are winnable but not guaranteed. If Trump wins election, the federal cases will go away, and that includes the documents case. The state charges and trial will likely be postponed because he will claim that he cannot be prosecuted while he is a sitting President and with the Supreme court that we have, they will probably agree in his favor. That would mean no justice until his 4 years are up. That is why, this election is more about whether Trump will be going to prison or not, rather than who will be President.

Am I missing something here about the justice system? To my understanding, anyone who has been convicted for a crime and it's a felony, that person looses his rights as a person in society and becomes a convict and is sent to prison for whatever time the state gives them,but this didn't happen to trump, and I'm sure the public wants to know why?
@karenwhaley8635Ай бұрын
He was convicted of 34 felony counts each one up to four years of jail time. His sentencing date has been moved until after the Presidential Election. Judge Merchan will sentence him accordingly. I don't know if he will be able to avoid it
@markzuckergecko621Ай бұрын
Yea pretty much all of that is wrong. You lose certain rights when you're convicted of a felony, but most of it is restored after you complete the sentence.

@jaytc3218Ай бұрын
Nope, you're not missing anything. I'm not directly familiar w/ NY state criminal law but most states place major restrictions on convicted felons between the time of the verdict and the time of sentencing. It's usually things like you have to surrender your passport, you have to ask permission to leave the state, no firearms, you have to report in to the court//probation dept., etc. But judges have a lot of flexibility in those things so I'm sure that Judge Merchan would have given Trump some latitude as far as traveling due to the campaign. He probably would have had to surrender his passport to his attorneys. On a personal level, the kid glove treatment he's gotten in all of his court proceedings is offensive. He repeatedly violated Judge Merchan's orders to refrain from talking about court personnel in social media. He did it over and over and nothing happened to him other than a small fine for contempt. Now there is one glimmer of hope on this point. Judge Merchan CAN take those flagrant violations into consideration when he sentences Trump. Hopefully, between the time when Trump was found guilty up until now, Merchan will have been using this time to put a sentencing package together that reflects those contempt violations. Fingers crossed. 🤞

I just finished the book. The book is really about power dynamics that most of us never hear about. Tristan Snell has seen how the powerful exercise influence and he gives us examples -- some of which he has firsthand knowledge -- of seemingly upstanding people being beholden to corrupting influences. But, of course, Trump is the current elephant in the room. And Tristan has dealt his fair share of pain to the Trump empire. He shows how Trump in particular leverages his fame and political power, and how it is either kowtowed to or denied. Snell shows how even if all the facts are there, politics wins the day in many cases. It's fascinating to read about how cases are pushed or dropped based on this. Snell managed to navigate the gauntlet and brought a successful prosecution, against numerous odds. Snell has a keen understanding of how power works in this world. It's worth buying just for that knowledge, doesn't matter where your politics land you.

My conclusion, given the magnitude of his crimes, the crushing amount of evidence and the enormous consequences of his actions, is that the US justice system is both corrupt and weak. I find it troubling that no one or very few people (Tristan Snell and a few others excepted) see this a part of the problem.

The rich criminal in America can get away with practically anything. Practically anything. This is precisely why a long list of mafia chieftains could never be successfully prosecuted for their most serious crimes-- only for much lesser things, like tax evasion. Trump is a would-be mob lord. He uses exactly the same tricks of legal evasion that the mafia used to such successful ends.
