You could put 4 persons in a room with the same problem to solve, and when they were let out there would be 5 different answers! It has become impossible in these days to come to an agreeable solution it seems! Our government entities, from local on up to the federal level our officials seem to relish in disagreeing. No matter what business your in, to the best of your abilities, you have to look to yourself for the answers. My wife and I are retired from the agriculture field, we've seen a lot of different administration's come and go, and the best advice on life's decisions is to think with your head, then decide with your heart. You seem to be a well informed young farmer Zach, with a lovely family and a wonderful way to make your living. the problem with the government isnt that you get the best solution. its that you get a solution you can't deny. at least in the free market you can take your money somewhere else. but the government already has your money, and will continue to have your money as long as you continue to produce and consume

I agree, whenever government injects money into an industry, it might have some temporary boost but the ramifications usually result in higher costs for the producer. We too want to farm without government aid. It seems whenever you accept a handout it always comes with strings attached. The less government regulation and control within a farm the better. This is one of the reasons we have taken out our CRP acres. Anyways we're all in this together and there is a lot of uncertainty within agricultural. Farm on!

Brian what's next... eliminate minimum safety regulations for airplane maintenance, let me know how that does. So what about the family of four that were killed by a sleepy truck driver and whose truck brakes were below minimum safety standards..... Which by the way didn't matter in this case, since the driver was asleep and never used them... YUP government regulation really screwed that truck driver...... www.wltz.com/2019/08/20/trucker-testifies-he-wasnt-negligent-after-killing-family-of-5/ Lets remove more government regulations so we get get killed on the highway by poorly maintained trucks and drivers with push the envelope and fall asleep behind the wheel. So you might say to me: "You're not a driver you don't know what it's like." And I will say, Actually I am a truck driver and say thank god there are regulations limiting drivers hours and mandating minimal truck safety standards. IN FACT, earlier this year I had to call the FMCSA on my employer because my co-workers including myself were falling asleep behind the wheel of fully loaded trucks and being threatened with our jobs if we didn't work the scheduled hours. FMCSA came in and gave our company a $300K fine for Hours of Service violations and gave a very stark warning to the owners. Clean it up or loose your DOT Cert. Since then NOT ONE driver has complained about being too tired to work........ AND drivers are making more money because there are more shifts. Funny how that works when, the laws are being followed. SO in my opinion thank god for government regulations.... It's saved my life and I'm sure many other peoples/family's lives.....

My belief is that most farmers know that they are providing for the masses and have that same sense of pride. Your analogy of a bandaid on an arterial wound is accurate. Well from my perspective, I don't care to much for politicians and bureaucrats to be messing in a person's business. Needless to say, if they are going to mess in or with someone's business. The politicians and bureaucrats should find a way to keep those businesses from going out of business. However, I still don't trust politicians and bureaucrats to do right by the people, they should be serving. Moreover, I would not count my chickens before they hatch, with regards to getting anything from the government. Due to the fact that there are aways strings attached as well as the fact that this is just another tactic from my perspective to divide the people of this country and have them going at each other, verses focusing on what I have always seen as the problem and that is the politicians and bureaucrats that are doing whatever it takes to stay in office. Which is one of the larger reasons, I have been a registered Independent voter since I was 19 year's old, which I am 44 now. furthermore, I have always made a conscious effort to be a Independent minded person on issues such as this one.

I was raised to work for everything. I wish the government stayed out of my business and let me do my thing, that goes for most of my neighbors as well, and that's what was one of Trump's campaign strategies in the case of downsizing government... I really hope he can keep his word. Really, the $12B is a drop in the bucket compared to what the government has done with money in the past with getting to the $20+ trillion debt.... We cannot continue to support so many countries without any return and it's really showing on the backbone.

You were talking about the government Farm subsidies of the 1950's. You need to ask yourself? Why were they giving money to Farmers not to farm? My dad used to farm and he said the problem was the farmers could grow more food than was needed. I think that's the problem we have today as far as corn and soybeans maybe other Foods. Far as the government manipulating things. The government is always manipulating something somewhere somehow. Many people think the Federal Reserve a government agency. In the Federal Reserve manipulates the money supply. China manipulate their money. Manipulation is everywhere. But look again at a corporation like Google who has a 5 billion dollar fine yet they blew away there analyst expectations a few days ago and Google stock jumped again in price. Even After figuring in a 5 billion dollar fine. Google might be in competition with their neighbor as you might say but not as much as a farmer growing corn.

I hope you will keep us updated on what impact you see once these subsidies start getting distributed to the actual farmers, and if they really amount to much of anything. Also keep us updated on the impact it has in your local community as far as how most of the farmers end up using the subsidies - pay off outstanding bills at local businesses, buy new/used equipment, buy/lease more land, leave the money in the bank, etc. I know these are touchy subjects, but you have a great way of just presenting the information and letting the facts fall where they may (just like the water & field tile issue).

The European community has no tariffs on soya at the moment. The import is depending on the prices on the world market. So at the moment Argentinian soya is cheaper than US soya, so the European companies buy there. In the "agreement" was stated that the European community would import 5 million metric tons of soya, but that is nonsence. The European community does not buy soya, companies buy soya and they buy where the price is low. The European community can not oblige the companies to buy US soya. Trump made a fake deal pleasing his voters in the soya producing states and in the end they get nothing of it.
@Crewsy6 жыл бұрын
Private Eye That is how all of his “deals” work. More people need to fact check his statements. Maybe we see it clearer here in Canada because our media isn’t as polarized as the US media is.......yet. The POTUS made a statement about Canadians buying shoes in the US and scuffing them up and wearing them home to avoid our HUGE shoe tariffs. People do buy shoes in the US and wear them home but it’s because the day trip tax free limits don’t allow for a pair of shoes along with the rest of what they want to buy. Besides a tariff would only apply to shoes made in the USA and I doubt there are many shoes made in the US now.

I don't farm, I'm a county ag agent. I work with farmers of all kinds and it's very tough right now. Most of these guys don't do this to get rich, they do it because they love it. Most have other jobs just to be able to justify farming. The economics of farming are a fickle beast, and right now many are raising products and selling them for less than cost-of-production and have no control over the market prices. The landscape of American agriculture is at a very fragile crossroads right now; with principal operators aging out, many new farmers are going to look at the current farming economy and opt out. Then where do we get our food and fiber? We could very well be put in a position to have to import a lot of our food, or force corporate farms to take over (which most consumers are opposed to). It's going to be interesting to see how all this shakes out.

Nice honesty and commitment to a free market. Farming aught to be a risk that requires competence and good decisions to be profitable like every other business. I’m concerned that isn’t always the case between subsidies and crop insurance. Great Video!

Here’s my thoughts: Past administrations have let the world fleece us through unfair trade. The world charges us high tariffs and subsidizes with government payments while the charge very little. President Trump says there should be zero tariffs and subsidizes period. That is fair trade! I and all Americans should be ready to tighten our belts as needed to help President Trump fix this and in the long run we all will be better off.
@ckm-mkc6 жыл бұрын
If you thing the US would be better off with zero tariffs, I have a bridge to sell you. The fact is that the people in the current administration would be happy to see a wage race to the bottom. Only large corporations benefit from that sort of policy, the people who will pay are the working class.

Trading partners of the USA, like any country, want consistency and reliability in supply and contracts. China has been slowly op[ening up to western economies and continues to do so and US agriculture products have grown in part because of that. That's taken years of work to establish. It's just plainly stupid to cut that business off to try and achieve an outcome..that may or may not mean a return of that custom. Some, a lot..of those cli8ents are just not going to come back because Trump has made the USA an unreliable trading partner.

2008 financial crisis ring a bell? Caused by massive, shady practices in the banking industry that any sensible human being would deem illegal. These practices were made possible by years of deregulation by the government, where they removed constraints put in place after the Great Depression to prevent such a thing from happening again. Absolute free market ecomomies are too fragile, correct government regulations are absolutely necessary to prevent or at least mitigate a collapse of the economy. Government direction of the economy however, like that of the Soviet Union, are just as fragile.
@ghavila17666 жыл бұрын
The 2008 financial crisis was caused by government interference in the banking system not by the free market.
@kylecasetta40916 жыл бұрын
2008 had more to do with American and world citizens way over borrowing. 2 and 3 mortgages. Government forcing banks to lend to unqualified borrower's. Yes several banks held shady deals and were punished. The majority of the blame is false markets from borrowings not government. Bill Clinton or gw did not force anyone to get 2nd mortgages to buy vacation houses or toys that was all us the American consumer we lived outside our means we paid the price.
@ghavila17666 жыл бұрын
Kyle Casetta All true, but also democrat legislators did push banks to loan to unqualified minorities at rates that the banks new the loanholders could not repay.
@woutvandenbossche60046 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't a simple restriction from the government that prevents you to take 3 mortgages if you can only afford one go a long way towards solving that problem? I don't trust the common man to think about economics and the financial system and the repercussions his actions have on them when he's just trying to get some extra money for a new car. I would like to see some evidence though, on the claim that "democrat legislators did push banks to loan to unqualified minorities at rates that the banks new the loanholders could not repay."

Something to think about...Germany has run a trade surplus EVERY year since 1951. The US has had a trade deficit every single year for the last +/-43 years.
@wiserguy72576 жыл бұрын
From what I recall from long ago classes, the important number to run the economy is the capital balance which also counts the flow of capital for investment, bonds, dollars, etc. The US has always done very well with their capital balance despite the trade deficit in some sectors. Trade and the type of trade is vitally important, but if you believe the academics then just looking at the trade balance is too simplistic.
@MikeCris6 жыл бұрын
Could that be because we have the ability to just print dollars into oblivion...to the tune of $20T? Most people don't understand the concept of a trade deficit...it's akin to printing $700B+ every year that circulates in other economies around the world. Imagine if that money was put to work circulating in our economy.
@ckm-mkc6 жыл бұрын
Every country in the world subsidizes the US - they buy dollars and our debt. @wiserguy is right, just looking at goods deficits is schoolboy naive. Every time the US does things that damage trade relationships, other countries move away from the US. It's a long, slow decline of power that we've been in since the end of the cold war. The world doesn't need the US anymore but as long as it wasn't rocking the boat, everyone was willing to leave well enough alone.
