I really disagree. We had a near miss, and we were lucky. Trump could have won, and even without winning the election, it was possible that he could have become a dictator (the supreme court hinted at a willingness to help him overturn 'election tampering' without defining what that meant nor acknowledging that voter fraud is not a common issue). We are lucky that the FBI caught so many white nationalist trump supporting terrorists who were energized by his message and behavior, and that the one governor lady was not kidnapped (and likely killed on video after a sham 'trial'). The republican party IS Trump right now. They are having to gently break away from him since it is clear he lost, but many probably will refuse to call Joe Biden the president ever. Trump didn't just appear, he is much of the worst that our society produces. Concentrating it into a man and making him president which then brings the worst out of people who had already been fighting against other people's human rights for decades. He has changed the world by polarizing people so extremely that a progressive leftist movement was refounded in the USA after decades of not really having one. Admittedly that was because they were responding to the suddenly very public and very vocal nazis (white nationalists, identitarians, race realists, or whatever else they call themselves to pretend they are not the same) who started marching with torches chanting "Jews Will Not Replace Us" and "Blood and Soil" and killing peaceful protestors with their car. We will continue feeling Trump in some way for a long time, and so will the GOP. They will refuse to acknowledge any contest where they are not in charge. Republicans trying to install Trump as a dictator (and the ones who are only enabling him by pretending their is voter fraud) is terrifying, because now it is normal to try, and the next time, we might have someone who is actually competent and doesn't hire leaky bags of sweat as their lawyer. The GOP had been an authoritarian white supremacist movement for decades, Trump just concentrated it and set it loose. QAnon belief is way up. Most political debates disagree on basic observable facts. Trump was a vaccine for authoritarian takeovers. We have to remove this kind of thinking from all of our politics. There is no need to ban the party because the Democratic party didn't lose its name when these same type of people split from the union. We are dealing with it now because we didn't stamp it out the last time they tried (the Confederacy was an authoritarian white nationalist state, and explicitly stated their belief that black people are sub human and must be enslaved). Instead, all of their leaders should be made irrelevant for at least a few decades so we can try to get this poison out of our country, or at least to fix everything up so we can actually be prepared the next time they try instead of letting them do it again next election. We really need to explore enforceable rules to deal with people maliciously spreading mis information to a wide audience. Hopefully we can find a way to preserve free speech but also not allow people on tv/youtube with no credentials telling you that windmills cause cancer, or an endless number of obviously bad faith arguments/tactics.
