1. Find dedicated spot to put potty pads that is easily accessible for the dog, preferably tiled for easier cleaning 2. If they chew on something they’re not supposed to, do not make it exciting for them by yelling, hold the item and stay still until they let go then reward them for letting it go 3. Surround potty pads with playpen/crate to make area more designated, make sure it overlaps a few inches of the playpen 5. Introduce them to potty pad area, reward when they show interest or sniff it 6. Walk dog to potty area every hour and after they eat, sleep, or play and use a command like “go potty” 7. Practice leash training while walking them to potty area 8. While they are doing the potty (not after) at the potty area, use a marker word, clap, and do positive reinforcement like give them a treat 9. During accidents, don’t scold, pick them up and put them in the potty area 10. Always watch out for potty signals like sniffing or pacing around, immediately bring them to potty area and wait until they go potty 11. Leave a little pee or poo so they can smell it first before you clean it up, they will most likely pee/poo in the same area 12. Start reducing the size of the potty area by gradually limiting it to a single pad and make them go potty in that small area, this can also be a segue to get them to go potty outdoors 13. Gradually move potty pad nearer to the door and start taking them outside to potty. Walk them outside every hour. Consistency matters, since you put a command to it they will understand what go potty means then reward them when they go potty outside 14. Consistency is key.

Everyone told me not to train my dog to use pee pads because then they will pee inside anywhere. My dog lived 13 years and never went anywhere but the pee pads (or outside). When he went blind he would UNDERSTANDLY sometimes miss the pads a little, but a kennel trey kept it all contained. It was the best decision I made, as I always lived in 2nd floor apts. It was also a life saver during storms and hurricanes when going outisde is impossible. I used LOTS of positive reinforcement for him as a baby and it worked.

Omggg thank you so much. Been practicing with my golden doodle for about 3-4hrs. He’s four months the past two months before we walk “let’s go potty” I leash him we’d go. I watched your video today and tried the puppy pads. “Let’s go potty” id point at the pads. He understood sometimes other times I had to walk over with him and point to the pads. By the next hour I was able to just point & say “go potty”. He didn’t actually potty he’d just walk over and sit on the pads. Which means he understood. I gave him a treat each time he successfully did that(we did this for quite some time be patient) . I Gave him a break. He had an accident near the pads. So I walked him “let’s go potty” and tried again an hour later. This time I seen he was anxious and pointed at the pads he was confused I walked over with him and he peed!!! Still lots of work and practice to go but I’m super excited we got it on the first day within a few hours thank you so much. Was not looking forward to taking him to training!

Thank you for normalizing puppy pad training. Our puppy will be arriving in the dead of winter. Today is minus 15 Celsius and too cold for our other dog to go out. I’m also disabled and not always able to get the dogs outside. I’ve always used this option and our current dog knows, no matter where we go, to go on her pad. It makes it really easy to travel with her, especially in places where there isn’t an outdoor area for her to pee in. I hate when trainers insist this isn’t a good idea because sometimes it’s the only option.

My fur baby was trained 1st to use pee pads, and then I trained him to go outside. Now he uses both (outdoors when he's outside, pee pads when he's inside). I believe that's healthier for his kidneys, less stressful for us (the humans can go out without worrying or giving our house key to a dog walker, etc), and infinitely more practical. He gets daily walks and playdates and visits to dog parks to sniff around and exercise, as well.

Omg yes I agree about the bladder problems it can cause. If humans don’t want to hold in their pee for hours why in the world would a dog want to. It’s so uncomfortable. Most trainers bash on potty pads. But honestly it’s so convenient. I work from from home so I’m able to take out my puppy every 1-2 hours to potty But my pup is a notorious peer so He will not hold in his pee for more than 3 hours. he will have accidents on his pads. Better than the floor 😅 the only problem is that sometimes the pee goes out the pad when the pee is too much.

@@larissa1770 can you please help me? I'm at my end with boyfriends dog. She's no puppy (4yrs old) but was trained improperly. Before I met him she would uncontrollably pee on my foot if excited and it would be super uncomfortable. When we moved in together immediately she started marking our apartment. Even if we lay the pads out she would pee & poop on the rugs which are cream white but now it has stains. She's a chihuahua. She rarely plays😢. Tugs on the leash , and just does everything but not nibble? She jumps on people and tries to eat their food. I think it's taking a toll on our relationship because the smell is unbearable. And the pee is so inconvenient. She pees on pillows and etc. The thing is I'll train her and he'll come back and do the counter opposite of the training. I just need to know is there a spray that kills bacteria in certain spots so she doesn't use it there? Because she's smart. Soo she'll poop by the pad or if I catch her she poops in the air going her cage. I had a pit before and she was an easier dog to train. I was in college so they forced me to give her away. She was the best. I want a dog but it completely turned me off to me not wanting another one. I'm constantly stepping, smelling, or seeing pee. She started peeing on the rugs so it's harder to detect the pee. But the smell is just the same.

@@iamchristelleh I understand how frustrating it can be because I have a 5 month old who is stubborn. I would never ever get a puppy again lol. There’s always ways to help but it takes patience & consistency. Because it genuinely sounds like she has no idea that she is only supposed to potty on the pads. Jumping : I recommend to not greet her all excited. Don’t even talk to her/look/pet her until she is calm. Even with your guests, tell them to ignore her cause she will end up peeing. If you have a leash on her, before she attempts jumping.. a small tug saying “off” Peeing: does she have a play pen or crate? If she’s being everywhere have a limited space for her when she’s unsupervised. Do not give her the privilege to be on your couch or beds. That’s earned within time. In your situation you would have to take her outside to potty every 1-2 hours until she gets the hang of it. If you still want to use pads set up a designated area. Physically take her to the pads the minute she eats/drinks. Having a leash & gently showing her that is where she is supposed to go. When she starts potting say “good potty”. Praise her for her action. Also no food or water after 6-7pm. So her bladder won’t get full. Take her on her last potty before bed then back to her crate or play pen. Also, a lot of dogs will continue peeing on stuff because they can physically smell their pee/poop there. Even if you cleaned sometimes the scent still lingers. Which is maybe why she continues peeing everywhere. I use vinegar and tea tree oil to cut off the smell. When you wash bedding put in vinegar & baking soda.

Thank you for acknowledging that sometimes potty training indoors is the best solution for ones particular circumstances, ie, hours worked, wildlife in yard etc. I have a Maltipoo who’s becoming pretty good at using her potty pads ( in a grate), but she also goes outside when needed on walks, outdoor playtime. Thank you for this! I’m getting a puppy tomorrow. And while I’m working from home now. I won’t be in about a month. By that time she’ll only be about 4 months. And my biggest concern is her not having access to outside to relief herself while I’m at work. A ton of people on KZbin videos say they go home during lunch or hire a walker. My lunch is only 30 minutes and there is just no way I could afford a dog walker every day. My plan is to have a grate around her crate and get some fake grass. So when she’s able to hold her bladder a bit longer. I can take away the pad and it’ll be an easier transition since it’s the same texture. To be honest it’s my biggest worry as I also live alone so this video saved me.

I've never struggled potty training a dog till now. I have a mixed breed dog, honestly we rescued her from the streets lol. She looks like golden retriever mix with a bunch of stuff. Anyways, she doesn't show signals of having to go to the bathroom. I was able to train her to go outside, she's very smart and learned to do that (she always only liked going on grass or something soft/texturish, so she even went on this bathmat I have that was soft and textured indoors). But i can never tell when she wants to go, even indoors she just loves to smells stuff out of curiosity after getting inside. I would do it every hour, but my schedule doesn't allow for that, it was a miracle i was able to show her to go outside.

Always used puppy pads to train my dogs. My current eldest was the easiest to train to use these then transition to outside. I took in a puppy 2 days ago which someone decided they didn't have time for now work has opened for them again since covid started. I feel they didn't even try and this puppy is potty anxious. She hides to do her buisiness and then becomes extremly anxious. I've done nothing but reassure and no telling off to try and help her lose the anxiety. This morning she used a puppy pad on her own and I went OTT with praise. She still ran away and hid bless her. I think the people who had her before may have scolded her every single time she had an accident. But 2 days in and she used the pad alone is impressive in my eyes. I thought this wouldn't happen for the longest time because of how she is with going. I expect plenty more accidents but I will follow your tips of taking her to it every hour to try and reinforce positive security and safety in learning for her.

Hi there, thank you for this. I bought a very posh toy poodle puppy. By the time I received him, I had taken ill and my son offered to keep him until I was better. A week later I had to take him and since I was very weak, I struggled with this puppy. I didn't want the rest of the family to notice how frustrated I was, plus since we live on a farm in South Africa, we have a small doggy door and we cannot physically take him out all the time. I had to make him follow our other dogs, a golden retriever and a Jack Russell. I put down the pads for a long time and now he is 4 months old and he still does No 1 AND 2 just everywhere. Our house is fully gated inside and out - I'm in South Africa. I have had lots of puppies in my lifetime, but this gorgeous little poodle just wont. I'm at my wits" end. He easily runs out with the other 2 dogs but he'll come back with them and dot it inside. In the beginning I did go out with him all of the time. Lock and unlocked but it seems impossible. Please help - anybody.

The rest of the time we were able to take him outside to potty… but it’s super stressful as I am also toilet training my 3 year old with autism. 🥲 I’m wondering if I should use pads or just stick it out sense he is going outside…?

I tried about 6 years ago to pee train my dog - he's little and a mix between Pomeranian and Yorkie. I didn't know what I was doing and nothing really worked. I eventually had him wear a diaper over the last few years. I decided to try again. He goes into the back room and basically finds the same spot and pees there. So I thought I could place a piddle pad right there. He wouldn't have any part of it and just went to an area of the room that didn't have one. By the end of the day I had piddle pads all over the place - but he ignored them all. I'm going to follow your advice and take him to one location each hour. He tends to go also right after eating or drinking. If I can get him trained, I'll be really happy. Diapers are ugly and immediately they smell up the whole dog. :) Any advice or suggestions?

Fantastic video - thank you so much!! We live in an apartment and rescued an older, small dog (just turned 11, possibly a Shih Poo). She's the most stubborn rescue I've ever owned but very food motivated. We plan to move aboard a boat to sail the world with us in 6 months. We initially put a fake grass mat on our balcony and she used it with zero training. I transitioned her to a washable pee pad on top of the grass with no issue. She uses her outdoor pad every morning but the rest of her potty trips are either at the outdoor bark park in the building or around town. It seems that she will not use the same pad indoors or at an indoor bark park, like at an airport. How can I transition her to use her pad indoors in preparation for a 15 hour flight to pick up our future boat? (She will fly with us in-cabin.) Once living on our boat, we can easily keep a pee pad outdoors in the covered cockpit. Also, do we need to train her to poop on the pad for the flight as well? It's an overnight flight so she doesn't normally eat or poop during that time frame.

In 2020 I purchased a mini goldendoodle (on the small size). The week I got him was when everything shut down. I had a month to stay home before returning to work. I’d take him out but as soon as we got in he’d go. My next door neighbor, a dog trainer (thank god) told me to start by taking him out every 10 min, and increase from there. I did that, and within a 6 weeks he was train, fully trained by 3 months. I use to put a diaper on him just in case, he wet himself in it a couple of times and hated wearing them, he’d hold his urine. I’ve tried introducing wee wee pads when the weather is bad, He would never!!! He’d come crying to me, but would not go on the wee pad. Now we are at work full time. We’ve decided to get him a companion because he’s not use to being alone. My sister had a yorkie, that we kept post of the time so he always had a play mate (they’d play like kids) We will be receiving this new puppy in 2 weeks. I’m hoping to wee -wee pad train her. With hopes of outdoor walking in the future. I’m eager to see how that goes!!

I have a crate for my 8 weeks Yorkie. I put two crates together and made it longer so she has enough space. At the back I have the a few pads, in the front she has her toys and two beds so she can stretch out and relax. When she's in her crate she goes on the pad. I also have a wee wee pad outdoor of her crate next to the crate so when she comes out when I'm home and she's playing or I'm trying to train her she goes on that one as well. Sometime I take her out in the backyard. It's a lot but she goes on and potty. If you not watching her Oh' bet and believe my girl is taking a wee somewhere else 🤣 It's tuff! Makes you feel like taking two drinks! 😂

I have had my Yorkiepoo for a month now and she is probably 90% pad trained. She actually picked her spots in the first few days I had her so I went with it. I have cats and have litter boxes so she decided that was her spots too. HOWEVer she wasn’t satisfied so she has a third spot. I am going to try when she is older to get down to beside litter boxes only. She sleeps all night at 3 mos old and heads to her pad when I open her crate door. With all the bragging of how good she is, she has at least one accident each day in other areas of the house. I have hardwoods all over so I just clean it up spray with vinegar water and hope it will soon not be a issue. I really don’t know what else to do. I am 84 and walk with a walker so I can not take her. Outside on a regular basis. My bigger issue is her chewing. She has gotten cords, woodwork, couch. Lift chair controls😳😳. If I catch her I really scold her but later on I catch her doing it again. She has plenty of hard chew toys, plus I give her a piece of carrot or a ice club occasionally to help with her teething pain.

The puppy pads are so useful. Some people might be lazy and simply use them as somewhere for their dog to 'go' but that is not what they're for. They're just to prevent any accidents in your house. If you're consistent and doing it right, house training shouldn't take more than a couple of weeks at most. Introducing bells are a great way to help your dog ask to go out. Every time they need to go, they'll hit the bell with their paw to alert you.

Hi thank you for the training, I've had my puppy for about 2 weeks now and he's great. He pees everywhere despite the pads available to him, when he pottys somewhere I say 'uh-uh' pick him up and put him on the pad - he instantly stops. I worry that he may be holding it - then when I turn my attention elsewhere - he continues his business somehwere else. SO my questions are 1. how do i make sure he uses the pads (i know your saying to practice hourly - but he gets distracted and ends up getting off the pad - he doesnt derive anything interesting over there 2. when we go outside, he gets too distracted by other things that he doesnt do the job 3, How often should I change the puppy pads - when he does use them - it doesnt look like he actually pees in one spot 4. PLEASE HELP - it does get a bit frustrating because he could literally go potty less that 2m from the pad

I'm fortunate enough to be able to train mine to use the bathroom outside in a fenced in area. The way I train my dogs contradicts what every dog trainer says but I have trained 3 dogs, going on 4, to NEVER use the bathroom inside, and they can be left roaming free in the house, unattended, even when I'm not home, for 10+ hours. The only time they will use the bathroom inside is when they absolutely can't hold it any longer which is incredibly rare and always diarrhea. My lab has only pooped in the house 2 times in the last 8 years. I use both positive and negative reinforcement. A loud firm "NO" when doing something wrong, a "Good girl", pet, training treat when doing something right. As for peeing or pooping inside or in the wrong place (not on a pad inside), I show it to them, putting their face up to it while pointing at it (not rubbing their face in it), they will try to push away so they do know they did something wrong, I say "No poop inside" or "no pee inside" then give them an hour in the cage. I only use cages for training, I don't like the idea of leaving my dog in a tiny cage for many hours. Trainers say they don't mind, I say how do they know they don't mind, it's not like you are aware of what a dog thinks...for the most part. This method does take longer but is much more effective than the so called "house trained" dogs that your typical dog trainer produces. If a dog cannot be left unattended, it isn't house trained. My method takes about 6 months to a year but after training is done they will never use the bathroom inside and can be left alone for many hours without doing anything bad. You can use the same technic for them tearing things up or chewing on things they shouldn't. Though I would use less time in the cage for anything other than pooping. 1 hour in the cage for pooping or peeing, 15 minutes in the cage for other things. I put them in the cage, in a room alone with the light on, I always shoe them what they did wrong and point to it and give a loud firm "NO" then straight to the cage. I'm working on a miniature pinscher now, my first small dog but I no longer work so I'm here all day. I smoke so I take her out every 30 minutes to an hour. She uses the bathroom up to 20 times a day, in which she only pee's or poops inside once within the say, rarely 2 times. So far, end of first month having here (now 13 weeks old) she hasn't ever used the bathroom inside more than 2 times out of around 20 within a day.

I have a golden-doodle which I got during the pandemic. He potty trained quite quick. But in the beginning, I’d take him out but he would potty as soon as we got in. My next door neighbor (a dog trainer) advised me to take him out every 20 min. Which I started doing. And increased to every 30 min, then every 45-1 hr. I’d have a bag of treats and reward him endlessly. Using this method, he was fully potty trained within 2-3 months. Now he’s 3, and he’s exceptional. He knows multiple tricks as well. He took to rewards very well. Till this day once I grab the bag of treats, he starts doing tricks, laying down, playing dead, high 5 before I can give any commands. Only thing is, once he was potty rained to go out, he never even use a wee wee pad. He won’t even go in a diaper, he hates a wet diaper on him. I tried and tried with the wee wee pad but was told once he’s learned to go out, chances of him going on a wee pad are slim, which is the case. We plan on getting him a companion now we’re back at work full time. And plan to pad train. Then outdoor train. Will see how it goes.

(hes 11 weeks so im pretty proud lol) but when i do take him outside for walks, to try to get him to pee, etc he will whine and then pee on the pad when he comes in - meaning hes holding it for the pad. would you recommend just pretty much waiting outside until he no longer can wait - even though hes whining ?

E R I N That is probably what I would do. They’ll only hold it for so long. The key is to reward as he potties outside (not after, but during) with a potty command. Give that same command then reward when he potties on potty pad, so he will start to connect the because to the word.
