I think the cherry is just something they used back in the 50s/60s for the looks, when you print a color picture of the food in your cook book, a red cherry makes it look more attractive. My parents never put one on the toast. Also, for full authenticity points, you need to use those single packed processed cheese slices ("Scheibletten").

About strawberry sandwich: I don't know if it's only me and my family or someone else eat it like that in Poland, but in strawberry season by grandma used to prepare for me a sandwich made with sliced bake roll, spread with butter and covered with half-cut strawberries. It's a kind of summer comfort snack to me. The point is to use butter wich is not salty, but it general in Poland the salt is not added to the most of brands of butter.

Hi, swede here. Smörgåstårta is actually not a sandwich, it's more like a savory cake. The ingredients wary and everyone does it a little bit differently (though my moms is the best) but ive never seen a ryebread one, it should always be white bread and preferably Landgångsbröd but that might be hard to find outside of sweden. A more fitting sandwich would perhaps have been a Toast Skagen or a räkmacka(shrimpsandwich) maybe next time. I enjoyed this though 😊

I'm from Finland and the smörgåstårta (or voileipäkakku as it's called in Finnish) is also a family event staple here. At least my grandmother used to make it with ham or smoked salmon filling, cucumber, radish and fresh dill served on top. And it's always made with white bread. It's definitely a... concept 😂 but I have to admit, it's good.

Toast Hawaii IS 50s to 70s party food from Western Germany. And the cherry is more for decoration, you can leave that out. You even chose good cheese, the original is with American cheese. In germany i would rather prefer the "armer Ritter" or "Strammer Max". The "armer Ritter" is like a french toast and a sweet type. the Toast is plac3d in whisked eggs and after in a mixture of sugar and a bit cinnamon. you cann fill it with a mild cheese and then fry it in the pan. The "Strammer Max" is one of my favourite. It is a good german bread, like a stronger one with a darker crust. You fry it in the pan and add cheese, ham, fried eggs and tomatoes. Use a little bit of salt and pepper and eat it with a bit ketchup on top. This is more an german sandwich, than the toast hawaii
