A burnisher, takes off the waxy top of a coloring pencil. In certain situations it can blend but often you want to use it when your drawing is finished. It pretty much mats the drawing

It actually adds a glossy finish by destroying all the tooth of the paper and with wax pencils it can cause a waxy build up. I say this because I’ve been burnishing all of my illustrations since 2012. Some of my old work looks a bit hazy these days from wax bloom. Edit: This can be avoided by using *oil-based pencils like Fabre-Castelle. I use Prismacolor but don’t mind the waxy-ness.

I know this was uploaded a while ago but here are a few tips for using colored pencils! 1. Try to keep the tip relatively long and don't color with just the tip. Try to keep the pencil sort of flat and use the sides when coloring large spaces! 2. Don't be afraid to color lightly! With colored pencils you can build up the color and they are often easier to blend when used lightly. 3. To get a smoother more solid finish instead of seeing the paper through the coloring great tools to use are the blending pencils (as shown in the video) and a liquid called turpentine which can be used on a brush almost like pain to blend colors and create that solid finish but be warned! Make sure to use a light hand with the liquid blending as it can also pick up the color in unintended ways. Colored pencils don't always need to be used with a lot of pressure and can provide better results when used lightly and the color is built up! Sorry this is so long but I love using colored pencils for art and thought I would share some knowledge of mine. Hope this helped!! Enjoy coloring! 💕💕💕

Trick to getting colored pencils to blend without breaking your wrist. *no I am not a professional artist however I am a professional doodler.* So first and foremost you must have a soft and extremely pigmented colored pencil if you're already starting there, awesome. Next Step; you're going to want to hold the pencil as though you're trying to hold it horizontally rather than vertically and you're going to want to use the side of the pencil with very minimal pressure and you'll see this put a very light coat over the entire area evenly. nine times out of 10 no matter how bumpy the paper is or how rough the paper is using this technique will get it to cover the entire paper. basically you want to keep doing this while applying pressure with your pointer finger only to increase the darkness of the color. in order to get full coverage you want to avoid pressing down when you first start and you want to rather build extremely light layers it usually takes about three layers but doing this will also allow you to blend colors extremely easily. I always use two colors for one color, so for example; if I'm trying to do a piece orange that section will always be a find gradient between yellow orange and red simply because shadows change color perspective so you want to keep that in mind when you're coloring. you want to be able to switch the color and not have everything be one big block color and this is going to be the easiest way to achieve this. focus on putting down layers of colored pencils that are light enough if you absolutely had to you can completely erase them. if you can completely erase your colored pencil line you should be using the right amount of pressure. when you apply too much pressure to the pencil you actually create a process called Plastering that's where you push down so hard on the pencils that you get to see that like waxy shiny finish, if that is your preferred finish then by all means go for it but if you're going for a smooth animated or realistic look with colored pencils the only way to get it is to build it rather than to excute first chance. Have fun ! *edit after watching more* so if you look at her cloak even after blending you have a lot of white spots and it doesn't look the smoothest, if you try this method I promise it will fix that

Practice coloring softer, and do big areas in small patches. You always want to start lighter and get darker with layers. Starting very light for me helps when I want to do more than one color cause it leaves more to play with, as apposed to coloring really hard and dark cause its harder to erase and add detail. Hard to explain. Hope that helps.
@whattheflyingfrigde5 жыл бұрын
I've found that when you use colored pencils (regardless of what brand- I'm your stereotypical Prisma person), when you are trying to fill larger areas tilt your pencil so that you are using the side of the lead, rather than the tip of the pencil. When you color only using the point, it takes longer to color and sometimes it'll make scratches in the laid color (especially if you are overlapping) or it'll damage/put too much pressure on the paper, making it buckle where you've used it. It's easier to blend colors by slowly layering and blending as you go. The trick is to use a blender towards the end, because it deposits a sort of waxy texture making it hard to lay more colors if you need them. And erasing colored pencil is nearly impossible once you start anyway, so building is the best idea, even if that means deepening areas to create contrast and dimension. White colored pencils are evil, be warned. They dull colors rather than lighten them, so I would experiment with it before you use them or try laying the white down first before you put down what colors you want it to blend with.

I got some colored pencil tips for ya Rin! I draw with colored pencils for like... Literally everything I draw so xD If you get multiple tones of the same color, then if you color lightly over one area, you can keep adding layers of different colors to shade, light, and even make soft gradients. You don't wanna press to hard with a pencil, here's why: You will use up a ton of graphite, and make thick layers of colors that will be harder to erase incase of mistakes, and also don't blend to well (depends on the type of pencil you're using.) It will strain your wrist, and no one wants that! You might end up chipping the graphite and (as mentioned before) using up a ton of graphite. I also recommend looking up a couple KZbin artists who color with colored pencils. I highly recommend WillD

A good trick that helps me with colored pencils is to start out with coloring in very lightly, you’re able to blend colors more easily as you build up the amount of pressure you use. You dont have to start with lots of pressure...ease into It as you go.. And it helps with the pencil texture on the paper. Really beautiful work!!!

Tips for coloured pencils - use very light layers (if you struggle like me with being heavy handed hold the pencil by the far end and use the side of the point to colour) and instead of colouring in straight lines back and forth use small circular or oval motions (technique called Scumbling). This means you’re not left with streaky lines all over the drawing. Build up the colour with lots of very thin, light layers (either different colours or different shades of the same colour) until you have the colour depth you want and the shading right for your image. I don’t particularly rate blending pencils as you do have to use a lot of pressure and they’re just using up a layer of tooth on the paper with absolutely no pigment in it at all. Personally I prefer to use an odourless mineral spirits like Gamsol. You can use it on paintbrushes, q-tips, paper stumps or my own favourite by dipping in a dried up old Copic colourless blender pen and using that to blend out the pigment of the pencils. After those are blended and dried do your final layer or two of detail and shading on top with more pencil (you find that the mineral spirits restores a little of the tooth to the paper so you can get in a few more layers 😊 Hope some of this helps! Please feel free to ask any questions- I’m by no means an expert but it is something I thoroughly enjoy.

*tips for blending colouring pencils* -that don’t make ur wrist hurt: Colour in a circular motion with ur darkest colour with very light pressure, then go in with the same amount of pressure with the next lightest colour. (Apply rly light pressure) continue to do this until u get to the lightest colour. Then do multiple light layers over what you have done before with the lightest colour. Do this until it’s completely blended and u will be left with a rly smooth even blended layer :) hope this helped!! If this was confusing I highly recommend watching @isabella.drawss ‘s blending tutorial, it explain how to blend ;)

A colored pencil tip that my dad taught me was always color in circles rather than the horizontal/vertical coloring. It blends colors better with the circle method and it relieves pressure on your wrists when coloring because you feel looser when drawing a circle rather than a line. Coloring in circles also gets rid of that "colored pencil texture" and makes it look smoother. Think of it kinda like cleaning, where you're taught to "Scrub in circles so you won't get streaks" Now this method isn't great for every piece, and sometimes that go to instinct to just scribble the color on is better than scribbling circles. I don't recommend the circle method for large area Coloring, it'll take a long time to fill in the space. But for simple sketchbook doodles like this it can be perfect. The only downside is, it does take longer to color, but the end result can be so worth that extra time spent!

With colored pencils I usually start with light pressure and slowly build up the colors and tones and blend with a color that is lighter but in the same hue family or I just use white. Building up slowly may take longer but it saves your wrist from some pain.

I never use straight lines for colouring with pencil crayons as it makes the lines more obvious and I prefer an even coverage. I always just do sort of tiny circles (or at least circular-ish motions) and the same for any colour I'm blending it with. Makes it much more gentle. I've never got the hang of just straight line colouring lol. I did it that way when very young and was promptly told by my Mum to try the little circles trick and have never bothered trying the other way again since it just never looked blended. But with the circular thing it looks like I just used a crayon of that colour instead of blended two together.
@Alina__Nyan5 жыл бұрын
@@@AlexaFaie I use circular motions sometimes as well! It really depends what texture you need to represent, an example would be hair, which I would never use circles for, but instead go in the same direction (sort of). It depends on texture and pigmentation. The pressure of your pencil strokes matter. If you have light pressure strokes, the direction will be more visible, than a really burnished result. This is just my experience anyway, I hope you all have a lovely day.
@Mmc.8795 жыл бұрын
Burnishing 101 (the way I learned it!): ▪Put down all of the undertones you want to (let's say you're drawing an apple; probably will use yellows and greens, along with some red). ▪Once you have a solid layer, use the burnishing tool (even white colored pencils will work for this) in small circular motions over the drawing, smoothing all the colors together (and yes, this usually makes them look more vibrant). ▪Next, put the MAIN color you want (if you're drawing a red apple, this is presumably red) on top (of course not interfering with any of your highlights), pressing fairly hard, like you did with the burnishing tool, with the same swirling (small-circles) technique. You should have a lovely burnished colored pencil piece!
@LawlietDeMonti5 жыл бұрын
Tip to add: This works best on colored paper background (personally i like using black) and you can use the white pencil to its fullest potential! Also yes whenever you're laying down color with pencils use small tight circles to reduce the look of strokes and make blending a lot easier! 😊
