Check Out My 100s Of Fire Making Videos... Just like a chipmunk packs his jowls full of seed? Unignited Ferro Rod scrapings are packed tightly into a tinder wrapped striker. Eventually, one of the scrapings ignites and sets them all off. This... kind of, powder keg of scrapings burns so intensely that it will make some of the most difficult tinders go to flames. I first saw this technique Friday night on Nathaniel's Adventures Channel (Link below). He was easily igniting paper and other tinders and it seemed to make a lot of sense to me. "Of course!!! getting tinders so close to the source of the sparks was going to make quicker and easier ignitions"... I was anxious to give it a try, but had to wait out 2 days of rain first.. What you're seeing today is my first ever attempts at this technique. Please SUBSCRIBE at the end of the video. Thanks! Great video. I try to carry a magnesium bar when in the woods. It's just more reliable for me in any weather. Maybe I'll try that technique with different tinders. Thanks.

I use this technique with waxed jute twine. I have 4 4" pieces of waxed jute attached to my sheath with a ranger band. Scrape the wax off the end of a piece of jute with my fingernail and run it down the fero rod between the striker and rod. I now have burning tinder as well as a 4" match. I wrap the jute in aluminum foil and attach with ranger bands for waterproof protection. It lights very easily.

I always feel that when I am making the most of the resources I have then I am doing it right no matter what it is. Capturing every spark cast off the rod by wrapping the tender around the steel seems to me like it is the right way to go to get maximum results from each strike you make. This is a hypothetical situation but if I only had one strike I could make you can bet that I would be wrapping my tender around the steel to gain the maximum advantage. Again you are always bringing us good info and techniques to try. You know how humans are, some will swear by this method and others will not. THANKS for sharing it with us!

I need to figure out how to get a controlled and targeted burn of the "powder keg" of those scrapings.

Cotton balls, charcloth, charwood, fatwood, punk wood and on, and on, and I never thought of newspapers. Thanks. Now I have a real use for them seeing I don't have a birdcage or a need to wrap fish.

This is an awesome idea.. Capturing the shavings, then igniting them. I think the shavings aren't igniting because they're not getting oxygen till you begin to unfold the material.? Another Great video! Thank you.

Cool! as a backpacker I carry the lip stick size off, it now has a dual purpose for damp days when the tinder around is wet. Thank you for the great tip.

Awesome dude,the only thing I see different than what I did was use less material,I know that sounds ridiculous lol but the looser it's wrapped the worse off it is,plus the more it's wrapped the harder it is for oxygen to get in,how true that is I don't know,but when I seen my buddy do it that's what he was telling me,awesome video and thanks for the shout-out man

Interesting 'twist' with the jute twine, up till now I (I suspect like other people) have spent what seems like hours while sat in front of the toob picking oakum with twine only to find that I've ended up with a small baggie of what has become a flash tinder and correspondingly more difficult to use

Yes... big difference in the burn time.

Dave maybe it's me but whats the difference between that technique and just scraping the rod slowly and collecting the shaving then scrapping fast and igniting the shavings?
@thomasgold-10005 жыл бұрын
Did you just use your knife for the striker??? LOL Thanks Dave for the great demonstration...

Everybody carries hand sanitizer . use a few drops of the hand sanitizer on the tinder to get a fire using a ferro rod .
