Have you ever tried saltidos, or chamoy flavored snacks from Mexico? They are believed to have the same cultural origins as lee hing mui and crack seed in Hawai'i, ultimately originating from Southern China. In Mexico they call the dried fruit "saltidos" (which means "little salty things"), while the words "see mui" probably evolved into "chamoy". Chamoy is made from the leftover brine used to make saltidos. Chili powder is added, and it's reduced to a consistency anywhere between a syrup to a paste, depending on the intended use. It's enjoyed on candy, fresh fruit, shave ice, or ice cream and soft serve.
