Burnt ends are most definitely NOT the leftovers. They're cut from the fattier end of the brisket called the point. They're usually then then thrown in some sauce and smoked a little more which makes them extra delicious. When I was in school the Oklahoma Joe's (in the gas station) was on my way to and from school. The line would form before they opened and it was fantastic. Didn't realize how lucky I was to have been able to eat there so much.
@TareUhhhhhh25 ай бұрын
Originally they were the leftovers and actually used to be thrown out I think. Arthur Bryant’s was the first place that started serving them and I think they just gave it away because it was the “waste” part of the meat. We’ve come such a long way in recognizing that it’s the best part 🤤

I'm a Kansan and a BBQ freak, so glad you got to experience KC BBQ. As for the cinnamon rolls & chili thing, it's rooted in the school lunch program. These two items were served together on lunch schedules and a lot of young Kansans became "pre-programmed" for eating them in the same sitting. When folks first hear of it, they usually think of cinnamon rolls covered with chili, like mashed potatoes and gravy. Kinda weird, but hey, I'd try it. (I love both, so why not combined?) Terrific video, guys!

I’m a Kansas City local, and chili with cinnamon rolls is more a Midwest thing than specifically KC. I’ve lived here my whole life and hadn’t heard of it until my wife-who is from a small town in Kansas-introduced me to it. Essentially, you put a cinnamon roll in a bowl and then cover it in chili to eat. It sounds SUPER weird, but it’s surprisingly good with the combination of sweet and savory.

When someone at work said they ate them together we all thought it was weird. Tried it. Still weird. And no consensus as to whether you actually eat them *together* of whether the cinnamon roll is a side or dessert. Most people here eat cornbread with chili.

I am an Oregon transplant to KC. The BBQ scene is ever changing - new places are always popping up and some are better than others. Authur Bryants is pretty a-ok but you also have Chef J and Harp BBQ - both are delicious. And then you have Wolfpack BBQ. And then... you get the idea. There are tons and most have something delicious to offer. Chili and Cinnamon Rolls - definitely a midwest thing - Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri - possibly more. If you see a restaurant called "Runza" and it's the right time of the year - you will see chili and cinnamon rolls offered on the same plate. They aren't TOGETHER on the plate- like you don't cover a cinnamon roll with chili but the flavors of each complement each other.

Definitely a thing from school lunches in the KC area, and likely the broader Midwest region. If chili was the main entree, there would be a huge cinnamon roll to go along with it. That said, I've never done anything weird like pour chili on the cinnamon roll, or dip the cinnamon roll in the chili, but for whatever reason they always went together. Outside of school lunches growing up, I can't remember seeing that combo on a menu anywhere in KC.

haha never dip the cinnamon roll in the chili - noted! thanks for the comment, i assumed based on the other comments that it was mostly a school lunch thing. guess we'll have to create our own next time we're somewhere that serves both 😎

Fun video. Couple of things you missed. Arthur Bryant’s BBQ Italian food. Some of the best in the US. Italian Delite in Mission is a must whenever I’m home.
@waysoftheworld_5 ай бұрын
Thanks! Arthur Bryants will definitely be the 1st place we go when we come back to KC. We did also look into some Italian places, but the ones I found seemed more 'white tablecloth' style - which is fine, but can be awkward to film 🙃 Italian Delite looks great and super casual... also added to the list 🙌

Thoughts: 1. I have lived in KC my whole life but have never heard the term “cheese slipper” 😅 2. Cinnamon and chili is more of a Nebraska thing. They have a chain called “Runya” that I think made it popular. My wife is from there and has informed me of such. 3. Shoutout to your host for excellent recommendations! I’ve been to most of those places dozens of times. Blackhole Bakery still feels like a hidden gem. 4. I love Betty Rae’s, but I’d also add High Hopes and French Custard to the list. 5. Messenger is good, but I’d add Oddly Correct and Second Best to the list. 6. I’m so so on the Neighborhood Cafe. I’d recommend the French Market and Homegrown instead. 7. Lastly, KCK is the Street Taco capital of America. You have to come back and eat some tacos! Glad you visited KC 😁

thanks for the tips! Blackhole was fantastic - and Neighborhood was partly a convenience thing (walking distance) and I confirmed they had chili and cinnamon rolls, so I assumed they served the combo 🤷🏻♂️

Never heard of a cheese slipper, must be a hipster thing. My siblings swear that chili & cinnamon rolls were a thing growing up for school lunch but I must have suppressed that.
@greenate124 ай бұрын
The original cheese slippers always came hot because they would only bake on weekends and would always sell out before the slippers had cooled off. Also burnt ends used to be more burnt. But they got popular than the sliced brisket, so now it's more just a way another way to serve the brisket with just a little extra char and gristle/fat. Still good but if you want something more like the original you have to know where to go.

Great video! It's much appreciated because people are traveling to KC more than ever. Especially in 2026 when we'll host World Cup matches.

Chili and cinnamon rolls was a menu suggestions from the govt food programs in schools. The schools would get large scale cookbooks and this was in one. The Des Moines Register did a story on it, hence my knowledge.

Lived in KC all my life, 49 years. We had chili and cinnamon rolls for school lunches all the time and still continue to eat it. But I’ve never heard of a cheese slipper.

Crossroads is dead before like 6-8pm. Everyone passed out from Friday night XD Y'all hit Joes, which is top notch, but there is one on the Kansas side in the suburbs called Blind Box BBQ and it is a heavy contender.

Glad you guys got to try the Zman but I'm surprised so many people recommend Q39. Most people I know who live here (myself included) don't actually like it compared to our other famous options. I would have recommended Jack stack for the ribs and the cheesy corn. Also the pulled pork is to die for at any of our restaurants. Try that next time! Lamar's donuts is also a famous option you should try.
@waysoftheworld_5 ай бұрын
yea everyone we spoke with mentioned Q39, maybe because it was fairly close to where we were staying. It may not be a traditional 'sticky table' bbq joint, but we thought the food was excellent. We'll check out others like Jack Stack and Arthur Bryants next time! And Lamar's 😎

Hiyo, only place you missed that is a great place is called Wabash, and its over in Excelsior Springs Missouri. If you come back i highly recommend the sampler platter and corn fritters. Another place i recommend for breakfast is either Big Biscuit or Corner Cafe, both of which are in Liberty Missouri and the cinnamon rolls in both are amazing.
@waysoftheworld_5 ай бұрын
thanks for the tips! hopefully we'll get a chance to check them out. we we're pretty limited without a car, so we stayed around downtown. but it would be great to explore beyond the city 😎
