Korean social media has a new new trend that exploded in popularity at the moment and that hot trend is rice paper ddeokbokki! Ddeokbokki (also spelt tteokbokki) is a spicy rice cake dish that is very popular here in South Korea and is also one of my favourite Korean foods. At the moment everyone is making it with a twist! Instead of using rice cakes like usual, a recipe has gone viral where you roll up rice paper into a rice cake shape, and maybe even fill them with cheese and use those to make the ddeokbokki. I’ve seen this recipe everywhere so I decided to jump straight on the trend and see if it was worth the hype!

This is one of my favorite videos ever, it shows how wholesome and wonderful Sara is, as well as her relationship with Hyun. Every year, I will cook tteobokki following Sara's recipe and toast to her!

I thought the whole trend was created by people in countries where it's hard to find rice cakes (saying this as someone who spent 3 months plotting how to get some to make tteokbokki). No idea it actually originated in Korea! I need to try this, it looks sooo good.

@@yulana990 well, i don't really know what actually you mean but it was our trend so all of the titles were in vietnamese, you can search "bánh gạo tteokbokki làm từ bánh tráng" and rice paper is hard to make it, better to find to buy it

True!! It’s way more chewy, take less time to cook and it can absorb sauce better, making it more delicious! Plus, it’s a cheaper alternative for real tteokboki for people outside SK as they are a bit expensive (import products)

I watched a few Korean mukbangers try this trend and quite honestly, yours looked the BEST!! Actually made my mouth water and I think I’ll have to give your recipe a try 😍 Great video. ㅋㅋㅋ 보고 있으니까 고등학생일때 친구들이랑 집에서 떡볶이 만들어 먹었던 때가 생각나네요~ 우리는 양파, 당근 파 넣었는데 제일 처음 물에 어묵 먼저 넣고 끓이면서 야채 넣었어요~ ㅋㅋㅋ 큰 머그컵에 양념장 만들어서 물조금 넣어서 풀어주고 그거 넣어서 끓였는데 물이 넘 많으면 오래 끓여야 하니까 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 제일 음식(?)잘하는 친구가 만들고 나머진 보조.. ㅋ (만드는 중 심심하니까 잘라놓은 어묵 쏙쏙 빼먹고 떡볶이 만드는 친구한테 재료 먹어치운다고 혼나고 그랬네요 ㅋㅋㅋ) 떡볶이 레시피는 만드는 사람마다 다 달라서 뭐가 정석이랄게 없어요~ 사라처럼 있는 재료로 맛있게 만드는게 제일 중요해요~ 넘 맛있어 보여서 저만의 레시피로 만들어 봐야겠어요 ㅋㅋ

Now I know what sesame leaves look like :) be great if you could show other Korean and East Asian greens and how to cook with them. I see so many greens at the international grocery here but don't know what to do with most of them.

In malaysia the tteok itself a bit expensive..so its hard for us to buy it..and if buy the instant tteok its not very nice and delicious..with the rice paper i think its easy and cheap way to try and as sara said its delicous..ill try it one day since my home got many rice paper..tq for the recipe saraaa..❤💚💛

Wow. I am super happy to try this at home. We have to drive more than an hour to the nearest asian market and forgot the rice cake this time. Next we need an easy recipe for fish cakes

Cook video 💡 idea: Make a full meal of viral recipes only to eat together as a set. It’d be a fun one! : 😂 I’m like Sara, I’ve looked up MANY tteokbokki recipes but ultimately- go with two things: what do I have on hand and what flavours do I like... My personal must haves are: stock of some sort- homemade with korean radish, anchovies and kelp is ultimate dream: but realism is I usually use a splash of fish sauce, a sprinkle of Japanese dashi stock powder and green onions 🤭 Then other must have is flat fish cake, gochugaru and or gochujong, soy sauce.... I sometimes just want it all with ramen noodles instead of rice cakes... I know 😱 Sometimes the rice cakes get a bit too much for me so I’m thinking this rice paper cake will help me to make them thinner! And last must: 💓 ;)

This is genius! I always have rice paper over when I make summer rolls. Now I can use it to make tteokbokki all the time. Rice cakes come in a huge bag at the local Asian grocery which is hard to use up by myself...

I ve a lot of rice paper at home.. but I'm a vegetarian.. what do u think I shud put instead of fish cakes? N can I substitute chilli powder instead of gochujang?

I think gochujang is a key ingredient, so if you can get your hands on some (online if you can't find it in stores) would be ideal. It's not just spicy, it has some thickening ingredients that really bring the sauce together. I didn't have fish cakes so I sliced up a thin omelette on my first attempt. Yum yum yum!

I made this a few days ago. My mind was blown. And the cheese filled ones!!!! (Even if I do use dairylea slices 👀) And no more weird tteokbokki with the round Chinese hot pot rice cakes I made a 3 hour trip to buy 🤡

made a hybrid of your and maangchi's tteokbokki recipes with these cheater tteok with the mozzarella cheese inside (when i'm less tired i'll try making them from scratch out of glutenous rice flour i picked up using her recipe) and it was super tasty. even got sesame leaves from the asian grocery which definitely added a fresh element :) (skipped the fish cuz veg) but thanks i probably wouldn't have made this if not for this video. i left the mozzarella too long and didn't seal it well enough in the rice paper so some leaked :( lesson for next time. still tasted great though and coating the tteok in the roasted sesame oil so they didn't dry/stick while waiting on the sauce to cook down added something so thanks to maangchi too :) my first korean dish i made that wasn't fresh cucumber kimchi :-D

I want to try this so bad T__T I've always wanted to try ddeokbokki but I'm always afraid it's going to be too spicy (I can't have spicy food despite my love for it), even when it just has gochujang. About how spicy would you rate this on a scale of, Sara...?

I don’t make mine too spicy but if you’re not sure you can start with less gochujang and add more if you like :) Or you can make jjajang ddeokbokki or gungjung ddeokbokki which is a soy sauce base! It’s so tasty and not spicy at all!

i'd look for an international grocery with asian food or just cook some fish on the side and put the sauce on it at the end so it doesn't get overcooked
