I get those all the time! I love them. The brand I get is more lavender colored & the taro filling is more golden, but still super good. I stick mine in a ziploc baggie with a piece of moist towl & zap it for about 40-50sec. Just bought chocolate steam buns & bit into my 1st one, which then exploded onto me! Thankfully, I had let it cool down.

Lately I have been plotting to make an ice cream out of what Thai people call kaprao which is a really delicious SE Asian mint-basil. I keep thinking about what the swirly ball of ice cream on top of halo halo looks like, and I really want this ice cream to look similar but be green and white. Ideally I’m thinking natural flavors and colors. I’m also craving corn ice cream. I would definitely try this. I used to know a bakery that made ube stuffed fresh malasadas and they were incredible.

I remember when I was in middle school they used to sell those at 7-11 in Hawaii and I would eat it almost everyday with a Arizona green tea. Spend 2 buck's and get full. I wish 7-11 still had them, they discontinued it about 10 years ago

The flavor is earthy. Think of other root starches like sweet potato and yams but sweeter. To me it’s not about the flavor but the aroma. Ube’s smell is just divine. If not for the smell, i dont think it would be as good as it is, though it’s the color that make it popular, it’s the smell that makes it good to eat. Most of the time though they put food coloring on it. Real ube isn’t as vibrant as that. In fact, most are white with violet veins tho they turn more violet as they cook. Another thing, the flavor of it i associate more with coconut milk. It’s the best pairing. From what i observe, it’s the coconut that carries most of our traditional desserts’ flavor and the “flavor” that also steals the show are the fragrant ingredients like ube. Another of this type is pandan. I can’t pinpoint the exact flavor of the leaves themselves, probably just leafy flavor lol but it’s the sweet smell along with coconut milk that makes pandan a good dessert addition.

@@avariceseven9443 our ube is always violet straight from the soil, the white or grayish with veins is taro but it’s true that it develops its very vibrant violet color as it cooks. But other ube can be whitish-purple. Aside from the color, just like you I really like ube’s fragnant. I can smell it from a distance, it smells like home haha. Pandan is refreshing, we put it in our rice for its comforting aroma, unlike ube’s flavor pandan is more subtle but i like them both I can’t choose between the two. Ube can be intimidating, it can have a strong taste sometimes and whenever I hear people say they don’t like it, I just know that one of the reason is the ube they ate is not done right. Ube can have an “aftertaste” so many tried to mask it by adding too much sugar or condensed milk when they use it for dessert, a common mistake for beginners or from people who never grow their ube in their backyards but just a normal thing for sweet addicts lol. When done perfectly, one can really taste its distinct flavor, it can be addicting. The taste is just like any root crop with a punch of fragrance, and it’s not as starchy as potatoes.

@@thedr9954 are you sure it’s not those purple sweet potatoes? The ones i’ve seen so far are just whitish with some violets. I’ve not seen ube that is pure violet inside. Must be some low quality ube, lol. Ube isnt a popular root crop to grow in our province but we like it here, mostly, in halaya form or other desserts.

@@avariceseven9443 Yes, they have darker peel almost like a bark, whitish pigment can be present but not necessarily in veins coz i really can't name a particular pattern to it. Purple sweet potato have almost the same outer appearance as normal camote, with ring if cut in cross section but their color is more consistent, they also have a very distinct shape unlike ube. We used to have ube, camote/sweet potato, cassava and sometimes taro. Purple sweet potato is more "nakakaumay" for me than ube haha

A local grocery store used to sell these and the most delicious char siu bao that I've ever had, but sadly the store closed. I was THRILLED when I found this exact brand at an Asian market in the neighboring city because they are identical to what I had been buying at that grocery store deli counter. I've bought a couple different bags of frozen bao from that Asian market, but still haven't found the ones like my old grocery store sold. My quest continues!!!

I am OBSESSED with ube. I live in pilipinas and my favourite store sells THE BEST ube icecream! So i bought some condensed milk and put some ice in the freezer and used my ice shaver to make ✨halo halo✨ Havent had it in so long so it was magical
