I’ve been doing this method pretty regularly. I like that it gives me volume and doesn’t stretch out my top layer like regular brush styling seems to do. After trying it I decided I preferred adding the gel after sectioning and styling instead of doing it to each section. I also did the first two sections upside down and then flipped upright and did the back section right side up. I love seeing people’s routines and taking pieces from them to improve my own.

Thank you so much Gena for your lovely honest review! 😍 I actually love how your hair turned out, trial & error is the best way to see what works and what doesn’t - and love how you adapted it for you. I came up with method mainly to help existing filp stylers who already prefer styling upside down. Also I realised I didn’t mention in my video but my hair strands are thick and my density is medium, the reason patches are sometimes seen on my scalp is to do with previous alopecia episodes - my curl type is a mixture of 3A & 3B. Xx

I tried this upright with my very long low-density hair after seeing someone else do it upright, too (on Instagram maybe?). Doing it upright involves starting with the back and working my way forward. It has been a game-changer for me. Thanks for your thoughts on the method! It helps to hear other people's tweaks.

I tried this today. I did the bottom layer styled down and the other two upside down. I really need my hair very wet to style too. It worked so good! I will continue to use this method for sure! Thanks for showing this!

Oh and at the end I flipped it all upside down and glazed more gel. Then flipped it all to one side and glazed more gel and did the same for the other side. Micro plopped. Then hover diffuse.

The first time I tried this my side looser curls were a problem. What did work is how to get the back hair in place after being upside down or even wet plopping so that the curls are not webbed. This was excellent commentary. This method does give you great volume.

I was wondering about this method for me too! I have high porosity, low density, fine waves/curls. I am still trying to figure out methods that work the best for me from a time and results perspective. I'm in a weird place where I get defined curls and no volume or I get volume and only waves.

So I do this method but instead I do it right side up with 4 sections. I adjusted it this way for my 2c/3a curls and it works wonders. My problem area was the curls at my nape just not clumping but this has helped tremendously. Skip the comb. No need it will loosen the clumps. Hope this helps.

I have been doing a modified version. I do like to style upside down but I don’t do the three sections. The part that I’ve adopted is where I weave my fingers in the back before I go upright. That used to be my trouble spot with upside styling. This works so much better. I do have medium hair but I do have a deep cowlick and that helps immensely. Am loving it

I think the other influencer you may be thinking of started Top Down Styling... This is for Volume & Definition. It is sectioned upright (same sections) and brushed straight up starting in the top section. I think she puts product on section each time before brushing, and doesn't use a comb. It is awkward, but some low D people recommend. I would switch to a bottom up upright sectioning with stylers in first. Ouidad official Rake and Shake does that but uses 5 sections (bottom, middle back in 2, above the ears, and crown. You rake the product and smooth with index and middle finger or smaller width comb as you break those sections into smaller ones, BUT i think using the 3-5 sections upright with product in, brushed & combed is what i shall try.

Thanks for trying out this method! I've been seeing it everywhere lately! I never have much luck with brush styling unfortunately. My curl pattern is a little looser than yours and I struggle to retain curl definition when using a brush.

Before I grab a towel, I use a wet brush on my hair, flipped over, but don't really bother with sections. I just finger through and scrunch, then towel and use a Denman brush, upright. Sometimes, I might section my hair and wind every piece with a long thin silver spoon. Those sections dry in perfect ringlets. Either way, it turns out curly.

I think you're right, this is more for those with thicker, fuller hair. I have thick hair and a lot of it. This technique works exceptionally well for me. I also do not get any matting at the back. I do have pretty short hair as well. I have hypothryroidism, so have had hair loss, and thankfully do not see any extra hair loss with this technique. I also let my hair air dry for about half an hour before diffusing to help with the dry time. I don't think you had too much frizz. You look really good!

My hair is fine thin 3b fragile high porosity curly hair. My hair didnt grow until age 4. I have scalp showing. I was told to wash once a week with conditioner and only shampoo every other week. Is that correct? Any tips? As a latina having really thin fragile curly hair is not so common and its so hard to find real helpful advice to help strengthen hair like mine and for growth. Ive had my hair like this my WHOLE LIFE. its not damage because i dont mess with my hair. I dont dye it or straighten it. Im afraid to since its so fragile. And if its my genetics its not obvious since my mother, sisters and family ALL have full thick curly hair.. And then theres me...someone who had this hair type my entire life. My hair grows sooooo slow as well. Sometimes i question if it grows at all 😭 Please help 🚩 I dont use heat or towel dry. I can just gently squeeze the water out and thats enough, itll dry within an hour. I dont use too many products because i get build up fast. I use lightweight products. My hair is also very very frizzy it sometimes feels like cotton. Balancing adding product with not adding too much because of buildup to not get frizzy or greasy is really hard. Its a mess.... Help me 😖 i want those bouncy curls at least if thickening isnt an option.

I wonder if there is a way to do a hybrid method with this where you can section the same, but start by styling the bottom layer upright and THEN use this method to style the top and middle layers. I had the same concern about the bottom section roots when I first saw the video, and I do struggle to style the top half of my hair upright. This could probably also work with gel worked in before brush styling.

I tried this method three times so far and everytime I don’t like the results my hair ends up going too forward towards my face. I end up more frizzy because the gel application isn’t as precise and when I flip up the back is funky. It’s easier for me to just do upright and I have more control of all those issues. But it looks so easy and I wish it worked for me.

But from an experienced curly who's never had it straight, the few at your face when you talked about curling the wrong way. I think you're actually curling them them the wrong way, and they were fighting to go the right way. That big S shape they're making when they're dry is what it looks like they're going against their natural direction. Hope that helps.

Yes you're totally right and I realized this too during styling. I said in the video how when trying to brush the entire section at once, I'm not able to let the curls go in their correct direction because the brush is horizontal. I tried both directions, over and under. However I think I just need to hold it vertically on each side and go in the natural direction of my curls like I usually do. ❤️❤️
