the less you start using your phone, the more you realize others use theirs a lot and are missing out on real life. Especially for gen z, there is a normalization of spending hours a day on your phone (even before quarantine)

Seriously! I realized that atp the only reason why I still have social media is to stay relevant with my friends cause I hate being the only person who’s like “what’s that”. Like my friends were making tiktok references a week ago and I was just confused because I haven’t had it since September . I used to hate people who would complain about my obsession with tiktok and the Internet (now they have social media lmao) but I’m starting to sympathize with them (how the tables have turned). I am not one of those people who are like “ugh I hate phones yadada” but I would like to talk about other things outside of the Internet sometimes. Like the content of the convos I have with my one friend is just tiktoks and it gets annoying sometimes cause I’d like them to talk about themselves rather than tiktok.

@@mel_ty9500 yeah same! and I see what you mean, like everything is related to trends online rather than topics to talk about with friends not revolving around technology. I recently had to evaluate how much anime I was watching because I found that it was all I would talk about with people and it was an obsession. Our generation has forgotten the joys of talking about life and stuff not relating to trends.

i totally agree with this, but i don’t know what to do except go on my phone, laptop or kindle especially in quarantine. i’m a master procrastinator who hands in all assignments late (or never) which is really wrecking my school life. social media and films have been my escape :/. if you guys have any ideas of what to do except read books in quarantine i’d love to know 💞

@@blkbarbie2671 i really relate to this!! I'm slowly trying to take care of myself and do my assignments now, one by one, and so far it's going okay. My tips for what you can do is find a hobby! It can be like knitting/ crocheting (make cute clothes/bags/blankets etc. and it's really relaxing & fun to see the progress), baking and cooking for your family and make them happy, if you like drawing you can go outside with a sketchbook and headphones and sit somewhere and draw (take some food with you if u want!), i also want to try to start rollerblading when it gets a little warmer outside (: sorry if this is too much but i can write a lot more ideas if you want hehe

@@blkbarbie2671 I feel this :( If you would like some suggestions for how to do things different: First, maybe start consuming media in different ways. Get engrossed in an audio book, listen to a new album, watch a new movie, or a documentary on something you’re interested in. Then you can try to find online communities to talk about those things. I get that a lot of us are doing a lot of socializing online, but it would be cool if we could socialize about things we knew we were interested in. It might feel better!

I do something similar to this every few months, but I always end up crawling back to social media. I am a pretty solitary person, and if I don't go on social media there's a solid chance I won't see a single person the entire day. I end up becoming isolated and loney, so I go to my parasocial relationships and pretend I'm not alone. It's definitely a problem I should work on

Love this video. I’ve been feeling the same way for a while. 6 months ago, I deleted all social media. Everything - Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, etc. All gone. At first my hands would absentmindedly open my phone and try and pull up the apps (so strange how engrained these habits were). This lasted a couple of weeks, but after, I felt liberated. I spent time doing things I really wanted - I took up running, writing, and reading. My mental health has improved soooo much. Sending love your way from London xx

I feel like a good way to cure *phone addiction* is to _customize your phone_ so that social media is no longer at the forefront of your phone usage. plus when you make it aesthetic, you get to look at pretty colours/ pictures when you're aimlessly locking into your phone (basically you're going on a _scenic route_ ). Another tip is just to _change the cover of a social media app to a picture of something that's negative_ (like a cute bandaid/ pills) so that your brain will _naturally_ start associating social media with toxicity. I explained how it's helpful to make your phone experience more intentional in my video (that I literally posted today like what are the odds lmao) but yea ew to -phone addiction- . I'm tired of being controlled by a device but I would personally not be participating in digital minimalism lol. I've spent a year without a phone before and it was really eye-opening but it's just not that sustainable for me.

I’ve tried to incorporate 2 days a week without my phone. Sounds so low, but I average about 7 hours a day. Sometimes it just music in the background, sometimes it’s talking to people, but I recognize it as a problem. I don’t like silence. I legitimately cannot stand silence. I’m an only child and reminds me of loneliness and the times I was just alone. I can’t do one activity without some kind of background noise, even reading even if it’s just music or something instrumental. It’s also hard for me to put my phone away because I have two little ones and I love taking pictures and videos of them, for myself, for my husband who missed it because he was at work and for our families who live far far away. But your video also makes me realize how much I need to just, try better but at the same time, not beat myself up over my mishaps. Thank you for this and I really enjoyed this journey with you. I’d love to see how things are going now.

As an elder millennial, I can remember part of a childhood without technology. I was so happy and free as a child. Then I began using social media in my late teens and that began taking up a lot of my time. Then after smart phones were introduced, it was all downhill from there. I now spend 4-5 hours a day consistently on my phone and I think it does carry a lot of weight mentally. I miss interacting with real people, so I've been trying to be more intentional with my time and actually spend it talking to friends and family. I also try to keep in mind the productive things I could be doing, instead of just mindlessly staring at my phone for hours.

Great video, Amanda! I've been slowly detoxing over the last half a year or so, and I think I've successfully detached from social media and mindless consumption. E.g. the only social media I use is a private insta with only 20 friends & I stopped using Netflix. Even still, there's so much good and useful content to absorb, so I find myself using my laptop & phone a lot. So my next step is to drive down my screen time and shift to non-screen fulfilment like books and writing by hand. (And maybe actually learning how to play my guitar??)

Pro-tip: You can set app timers on your phone. Idk where for Iphones but for android it's under settings and digital wellness! I have an hour set for apps like IG and tiktok. You can obviously change it (I give myself more allowance when i'm feeling ill or somewhere with literaly nothing else to do) but generally it's more annoying to change the setting than to just find something else to do. It's been very helpful for me. Also if you aren't ready to give it up all together, make one day of the week a no social media day- My sundays are no social days! I try to fill my time reading (which is still on a screen but not mindless scrolling), or one of my hobbies. And if all else fails sometimes I lay and listen to music and think.

I've realized that I don't have any actual hobbies. All I do for fun is consume content - browse social media, listen to music, watch Netflix and KZbin, and play video games. I'm trying to change this but it's all I've done for so long that I genuinely don't where to start. I don't know what else I enjoy because I've been pacifying myself with my phone for as long as I can remember. Even sitting still and trying to think without any distractions is hard.

I would love to see more videos like this! Back in October I deleted almost all my social media apps, with Quora & KZbin being the exceptions. I still have to work on digital addiction but it was a huge step getting rid of Instagram

This was such a lovely video, I think we can all do much better in terms if curating a healthy relationship with social media, there is only so much we can blame on these apps. But it definitely takes time, thanks for your transparency! 💙

i deleted instagram from my phone half a year ago and its so relieving for me, leaves much more room for other thoughts not centering around other people/content you see on the app. definitely miss following my favorite artists but also I#m able to develop my own personality without influence ; if ypure thinking about digital detox def do it, youll see nothing on there is real

Thanks for this. It was a good push to do a digital detox myself. I won't banned the apps, I'll heavily limit them for 15 days. I hope that erasing some of my background noise helps me work through some stuff. Wish me luck.

15:42 see I’m kind of in the middle on this topic. I’m someone who holds conversations through text. I rarely send one text message of a meme and just move on. I usually text someone from hours on end about who knows what because I enjoy conversation. I do think FaceTime is better but I realize that it’s inconvenient for a lot of people. But what I do do (lol) is I send audio messages. I really only send audio messages to one of my friends but she’s the person I talk to the most anyways. And even though it’s not complete connection it grounds me in a way, and reminds me that it’s a real person on the other side. And then when I see her again (we live in the same state but she goes to a different school also Coronavirus so I’m only seeing her in like 6 month intervals) it’s not that weird to have a back and forth conversation. I have a couple of friends that I do just check in on and we just send a short text to each other or a meme, and I’m not a fan. I don’t really know how to have conversations with them because I’m used to sending short bits to them and not having a full convo.
