The problem with "but the olders are conservative so were gonna be cons when were older" is that 1. There was more opportunities and freedom back then at least for the middle class. 2. All generations are more progressive and more informed than the last.
@BasicLib3 жыл бұрын
The problem however with these problems you listed is: 1) Not necessarily true Not for minorities not for places outside the west etc. I can tell you first hand about the conditions my people were in at decolonization and ask you who is being left out within your societies when a golden age in the 60s is being painted. But more importantly, there’s no telling how the economics of the 21st century will go to determine that the mass expansion of human opportunity that has been occurring in one shape or form since the first revolutions of the 18th Century: The Political one that toppled Aristocracy and, Feudalism and in time Slavey And the Technological one that destroyed the Agrarian society making said political revolutions even possible due to the mass mobilization of the newly created urban bourgeoisie which would in time go to form the very “middle class” we all harp on about. Will end in this generation is a bit of the generational centralism problem in which everyone believes their time is when “IT” will happen. And it rarely ever is. Collectively it has been “Our time” where “IT” happened for the past 3 centuries and all the transformations in human society that have occurred over that period. 2) Secondly you are legitimately making JJs point for him. A Graccrian Conservative was not the Same as a Sullan One or one during the Days of Julius and even one then was not the same during the reign of the Augustus. Similarly a conservative during the 7years war was different from one during the American revolution which was different from one during the Civil war which was different from one during Reconstruction or the progressive Era or the Cold War or in 2020 What is “Conservative” and what is “Progressive vary wildly with whatever ideas are politically hegemonic at the time and the crux of the conservative-progressive tug in sociopolitics is that those older and with a lot more in terms of experience with political events and moments are a lot more inclined to support the “conservative” position as they have a lot more to loose as opposed to the younger ones who are a lot more predisposed to support any change to the status quo that grants them more power I.e the “progressive” position. Before it then becomes politically hegemonic and thus “conservative” A fun little corollary to this is Mao helped overthrow the KMT as the leader of the most “Progressive” faction in China, created a new hegemonic political order which was maintained by the former revolutionaries turned to old conservatives . This system was then challenged by younger “progressives” who overthrew Maos regime whit Deng Xaoipings opening of China now after 40 years his reforms were the conservative position and new Chinese progressives led by Xi Jingping launched a mini revolution within the CCP and overthrow the old Conservatives of Deng and plan to build a “new Modern China” and soon enough they too will by overthrown by progressives all they while being one party… a communist party of all things. YOU WILL BECOME A CONSERVATIVE it’s just statistically near certainty at this point that the experience of political shifts will leave you in the winds as your framework for viewing the world becomes outdated by something else. Now you can decide to not dig in much and just go with what the kids are saying when the time comes but you will never really be at the ideological forefront once a certain stage passes that is unless of course you are a communist in a capitalist society or a liberal(OG liberal) in an Authoritarian one etc. unless you support a set of ideas that never end up becoming hegemonic because they are too far out of the window of possibility, then you’ll never become a conservative. But that’s highly unlikely as at some points all ideas are eventually tried somehow somewhere by someone.
@JusSageMakes3 жыл бұрын
@@BasicLib I agree the third world has been colonized/exploited by the rest of the world and dont have a 60's to look back to (im also from the 3rd world and i also specificied atleast for the middle class in my comment, a bit western centric ik) but the very fact that we know about the injustices of the first world is a step forward towards equality, that in itself is progressivism. Knowlegde brings empathy, empathy brings change. 2. If im not mistaken youve argued that by times changing so will the desires of younger people compared to older people, yes, I will prob be "conservative" but as you pointed out the definition of conservative has changed over time, it just means we have progressed passed that definition of conservatism and thus have adopted new progressivism for the betterment of humanity. Its the same for even communism, i believe communism is better than capitalism, but i also believe there is something beyond even that. Each generation has/will be more progressive than the last, not because I or you "become more conservative" but rather the opposite, the next generation will be more progressive especially with the history retention/proliferation these days, barring a completely cataclyismic event humans will keep progressing.
@otto_jk3 жыл бұрын
In USA generally politics of the generations always reflect the person who was the most popular president in their youth. The Trump crowd is largely made of people who were white middle-class kids when Regan was the president. And when Clinton was elected the supporter base was largely made of middle class kids from the Kennedy era. Of course there are people who don't follow this trend. Black city dwellers vote always democrat and rural whites vote republican.
Ehh as a 30 year old man I kinda have to disagree. Me and all my friends were radical leftist anarchists when we were kids, and as we've grown up, us people of different economic and social status have all become either moderate conservative or moderate social liberals. Idk I think these kind of radical social philosophies are really only possible to believe in if you have no job and no real perspective of the world. So once you become an adult you just kinda grow out of it.

jj (spoilers: rip) was post-ironically my favorite communicator of leftist thought on capitalism and the middle class - his videos are remarkably good at frankly discussing the anxieties and ennui and fragility of middle class white western capitalism. They have really accessible discussions about the exclusionary nature of the middle class aesthetic and narrative, and then, invariably, at the end he's like "which i think is neat and the best way for things to be". It's only fitting he be replaced horror movie style like this. jj mccullough is dead. long live jj mccullough

J.J. here talks about being "cautious of extreme ideologies" and being pragmatic, etc. saying that "as you get older you realize that people with extreme ideologies are wrong about most things" and its kind of depressing to hear, this is the thought process of the common 30+ year old, they're not necessarily wise, well-informed, educated, etc they are simply complacent, devoid of revolutionary spirit because it was slowly beat out of them over many year by the system they live under, they are comfortable. To be "cautious" of "extreme" ideologies is to assume, incorrectly so that our current political culture is a permanent fixture, that some opinions are by nature extreme, and not that they are extreme only relative to the status quo. Slavery for example used to be this status quo, and anti-slavery sentiment was considered extreme, not so today, J.J. here would have been one of the people to say "Just hold on a second, i think perhaps we should think about this whole abolishing slavery thing for a little longer, i mean, just think about the economy...". He talks like his age and years of consuming politics 4th hand has educated him into a wise position, one where "both sides bad", his vision of the world is limited, boxes inside boxes inside boxes, the division of political "sides", political identities, capitalist realism, etc. he says some may put their theory before observed reality as if we can be accurate in our assessments by simply observing and not thinking any deeper, not thinking of history and the many experiments that have led to that theory, we are not intelligent or unbiased enough to make these sorts of assessments purely through observation, that is the lazy and unthinking man's smugness talking, its quite easy to believe you've figured everything out when you dont think about things very often and base yourself completely on your percieved observed reality. He also speaks of gay identity as not being a political thing but everything is political, politics shape our lives to the most minute detail, many homosexuals have suffered greatly due to politics and have been elevated greatly by the same, to be at all is a political thing because your existence has to be accounted for on a political level, atleast in our current system. he says that he thinks that his reality being completely uprooted by a younger generation isnt a thing that really happens, this is obviously untrue, even in the example he gave of the hippies, they changed a lot about society, many feminist and racial advances were made by that generation a great deal of cultural, scientific, philosophical and political changes occured but this never crosses his mind, ironic that he said that so called "radicals" dont see the world for its complexities and nuances when he himself sees the world in the simplest most generalized way, where in all boomers were hippies and all hippies became boomers (in the coloquial sense) for example. This is the average person, the centrist, in all his triteness unquestioning, comfortable, afraid of change, smug. Fascinating, exploitable but above all, depressing. The ball and chain on humanity's leg, no wonder all "centrists" end up just being conservatives, their comfort and unquestioning leaves them vulnerable to the much more rhetorically effective right.

But it's true that regardless of your sexual orientation the ideology you align with can be pretty much all. And making your identity political as in recognising and assuming the politics behind them takes away the genuine human feelings of interest for each other. It sees sexuality as a tool and not an attraction. Which is why a lot people are against political lesbianism

What weird timing. I just watched a JJ video about 45 mins ago that finally upset me, the Mandela debate, not because of the topic, but because he insists on believing that objective reality exists. All I can say is that when he gets into his 40s, he'll start to realize how much of his beliefs about objective reality and centrism are just a product of being a 30-something, a phase that he'll likely grow out of once the honeymoon period of a stable middle class life wears off and the desire to fully radicalize sets in.

Hopefully JJ McCuck realizes the folly of being an Anglo Nationalist and rises up to support Québéc Libre. Or he becomes a Based Technocrat. Idk what JJs’ stance on Technology is but I assume he has no dog in the Spiritist/Materialist Political Compass.
