The first iPod is 18 years old- and I picked one up a bit ago. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it wasn't as easy to get it up and running as a modern device, so in this video let's go over the steps necessary to make the iPod completely usable!

Weird thing is nobody actually OWNS songs on iTunes: _If you buy a digital music track or album from the iTunes store or one of its competitors, you don't own it. ... If you buy a digital album from an online service such as the iTunes store, Amazon MP3, or eMusic, you have no legal right to lend that album to a friend, as you could if you had purchased a CD_ . It sounds nuts but those are the terms & conditions😲 Bruce Willis had to deal with this Apple oddity a few years ago, check out the article here >>> www.theguardian.com/film/2012/sep/03/bruce-willis-apple-itunes-library

Think about this: There were 22 years between the releases of the Sony Walkman and the iPod. There are 18 years between the release of the iPod to now. This means that, in the year 2023 (in 3 and a half years time) *the iPod would be as old to us as the Walkman was when the iPod came out.*

Excellent job. I’ve got a Classic 160GB 6th Gen. First Apple product I got, got it just before the iPad 4th Gen and iPhone 5. Still works well, seven years later. Battery life is a bit rubbish, but I mainly have it docked into a hifi with an old 30 pin connector onboard. I always preferred the Classic over the other iPods. Storage means more songs. And high quality as well. Kinda got superseded when my iPhone storage matched and surpassed its storage. But still, an absolute gem of a device.

Gerrad Reynolds because they are a publicly traded for-profit company. Apple wants customers who don’t have a problem with spending money, not penny-pinchers. And they use proprietary connectors because of quality control. Lightning, unlike USB-C, has no maybes. You plug in and go to power up, sync data and to play music through certain cars and stereos. A given USB-C cord may or may not support all of those things, and there are no industry standards for it.

@Ben K. Then the "U" in USB (Universal Serial Bus) isn't really universal after all when it comes to USB C. Apple's cables are even less universal, as they only work on Apple devices.

This iPod got me into the Apple ecosystem. I bought the Bondi Blue iMac, Cube G4, iBook and so on. I got in on eBay from a user in L.A. and was sad I had to sell it when I upgraded. Back then I had to always sell my stuff in order to afford upgrading. Now older, I'm collecting everything all over again. Just found an iPod locally and picking it up after watching this video and bringing back the memory. Plan on using it with my 2008 Mac Pro. Thanks for the useful information.

I've also been using my 5th gen iPod for about that long! I had to replace the headphone jack at one point because the left channel wouldn't work unless the headphone cord was bent just right. I switched out the faceplate and click wheel after damaging them from running into the corner of a table at full speed. And a few years ago the hard drive gave me the dreaded death clicks and died on me completely, so I replaced it with an SD card reader and now have a lighter (honestly took a long time to get used to the weight difference!) iPod with double the storage capacity. I'm keeping this undead monstrosity going as long as I can and loving every moment of use. More convenient than using my phone in the car because I can operate it by feel and keep my eyes on the road.

The first Apple product I ever bought was a 20 Gig iPod Click Wheel. I bought it new in 2005, and used it daily till around 2011. Meanwhile I bought a 64 Gig iPod Touch 3rd gen in 2008, and still use it daily. I relegated my 20 Gig iPod click wheel to work use when I bought the touch. I purchased a used 30 Gig 5th gen when the 20 Gig died. The 30 Gig still works, but I rarely use it now. I do have plans to convert it to SSD storage since the HDD is really showing signs of wear. My 3rd gen iPod touch is by far the most reliable Apple product I've ever owned, and I respect it more every day. It gets me through my work hours with podcasts and great tunes.
