J.D. Sumner (November 19, 1924 - November 16, 1998) was an American gospel singer, songwriter and music promoter noted for his bass voice, and his innovation in Gospel music. Sumner sang in five quartets and was a member of the Blackwood Brothers during their 1950s heyday. Aside from his incredibly low bass voice, Sumner's business acumen helped promote Southern Gospel and move it into the mainstream of American culture and music during the '50s and '60s.
As a teenager, Elvis Presley idolized Sumner's singing after seeing him perform with the Sunshine Boys. Presley hired Sumner & The Stamps as his back-up singers in 1971. The group toured and recorded with Presley from November 1971 until Presley's death in 1977. Sumner not only sang at Elvis' funeral but had previously sung at the funeral of Elvis' mother Gladys in 1958.

I can see how Elvis could be in deep conversations with JD, with the others he couldn't really be to deep with them they preferred the high fun life, My thoughts on Larry althogh he seems to be a good man (not sure if he believed in God), is that he confused Elvis abit with these other types of being a human.

Thank you. This is truly beautiful. I met you over 40 years ago in Lake Charles, LA. My father and I walked up to you after your show. I asked about Elvis. I can't remember your exact words, but I left the Civic Center that night feeling just a little closer to a man touched by our Lord Jesus. Since Elvis passed, I've listened to so many stories, but (with the exception of Ginger Alden and you), most of them highlighted their own lives, not his. I believe your understanding of this tender hearted man was given to you by God.

I was lucky enough to meet J.D. Sumner when he came to my school back in 1981 when I was 12 and spoke at our Bible Study class. J.D. spoke about how when he met Elvis at Graceland before he was going to work for him in 1971. He said that Elvis gave him his credit card and told him to go buy a new wardrobe and whatever else he needed. J.D. also spoke about Elvis' strong faith in God and his love of Gospel music. J.D. was never just "an employee". He was a devoted and loyal friend who went on to dispute false rumors made about Elvis and set the record straight. Elvis would have been touched and proud of how his close friend J.D. stood up for him when some others close to him merely looked to profit off of his name.

I’ve only found KZbin about two years ago. I have watched every ELVIS video I can, every day, hours a day. Frustrating my husband 😉. I can’t believe how much is out there on Elvis. It’s been phenomenal. I know JD was a good friend and I know Elvis told JD once that he was worried about his drinking. JD convinced Elvis it was just a little whiskey to warm up his vocals. But I just saw a Geraldo show that is covering alcoholic/addicted celebrities and JD is up there with several others. I couldn’t believe it. Did anyone ever hear that? He said he drank two fifths a day!🥺 What does he mean he doesn’t believe Sonny and Red wrote the book? Sonny said on an interview “In the beginning we wrote it due to bitterness, I tell you…..

I was fortunate enough to know the great JD Sumner for most of my life. To me, he was also "Big Daddy" as he was to his grandchildren. I traveled to see him & The Stamps & The Masters Five. While The Stamps backed Elvis, I never went to the concerts, even though JD offered tickets & backstage passes. I preferred to wait & see JD in person & greet those Stamps in person! Yes, JD loved Elvis so much & would never have said anything negative about him, even though the media tried to paint our Elvis as a celebrity and idol as a "drug induced star." I only wish Elvis's closest caretakers could have gotten him into an intense care facility in time; however, I'll always believe God had His own time schedule for this wonderful man. We miss you, Elvis, and our fantastic JD Sumner. 🤗❤️❤️

Elvis always looked up to JD and really had a love for him. Many times Elvis called him in the middle of the night and spoke of things in the Bible. I think during those times Elvis looked at JD as a he'd called JD the night before he died and wanted to talk about something very important,JD was tying up loose ends to start the tour the next day and couldn't make it. He always regretted not going to see Elvis then. Elvis never would discuss things on the phone,he always wanted people there in person. Larry Geller and another person said Elvis was wanting to go on a gospel tour. Elvis said there were going to be alot of changes coming, and he was going to get rid of a lot of people, take time off and get healthy and take things in a different direction. I really believe that, because Elvis always wanted to be a gospel singer from a very young age. He was never happier than when he was singing Gospel. You could see it in his face and hear it in his voice when he sang a gospel song in his shows! You could hear in his voice the love and his whole being taken over by the words he was singing. Well, he's singing with the angels now and I know he's finally at peace and happy.

Elvis Presley was the closest thing to a human god! The greatest entertainer the world has ever seen, with A god-given voice along with extremely good looks and s style so many try to copy. I miss Elvis so I listen to his music all the time. Long live the King!

@@andyjohnmm What? I said he was singer and didn't play bass. Was that harsh? Possibly he was referring to his low bass singing.

Both these men gave the world so much joy. JD sang at Glady’s funeral and Elvis’s funeral. They knew eachother since Elvis was 14. JD said if Elvis found out someone was doing cocaine or pot or even drinking he’d fire them on the spot... with one exception. JD had an alcohol problem and he convinced Elvis that he needed whiskey to get that low bass voice. Lol He said on stage the whiskey was always on stage in a glass to his right. Elvis pulled him aside one day and said, “ JD, the whiskey isn’t affecting your job performance, but I’m worried about you and your health, that much alcohol will kill you. JD, told him, “ don’t worry Elvis, I got a handle on this. JD told this story on a talk show about addicts and I saw it here on KZbin. It was funny how Elvis believed that crap & only JD was allowed to drink. It was said that Elvis legally changed the spelling of his middle name to Aaron with two A’s because he wanted the biblical spelling. It’s in many of his biographies. Sounds like something he’d do. 😊 HERE’S THAT INTERVIEW OF JD SAYING HE SOLD ELVIS THAT HE NEEDED THE WHISKEY TO SING LOW AND GET HIS BASS TONE VOICE. NOT TOO MANY PULLED A FAST ONE ON PRESLEY BUT THESE TWO MEN REALLY CARED FOR ONE ANOTHER. (Enjoy, I did) 😂 And of course, I’m glad he got through to the other side of his addiction which makes it lighter and easier to laugh about. #RIPElvisPresley 👑 #RIPJDSumner 🙏🏼 (I bet these two are singing there hearts out for Jesus. Please, tell my daddy I love and miss him so much) 💔 kzbin.info/www/bejne/emmaYZetqNh3ZqM
