On my V1 flash, the lowest power setting in manual is 1/256. But when I switch to TTL, the power is lower! 1/256 is so much brighter. ... Why would that be the case? I'd like to stay in manual, but I can't get a lower output unless I switch to TTL

I know this is how it is designed. For me, the modeling lamp works fine as a constant light. If you need power output lower than 1/256 the modeling lamp provides enough power output. You just need to detach the flash from your camera otherwise the flash will still be triggered. You can hold the light in on hand and the camera in the other hand. Or ask someone to point the light onto your subject. This even gives you the freedom to move the light anywhere like an off-camera flash. Be aware that the Godox V1 modeling lamp has a warmer light temperature than the flashlight. This can be easily corrected with the camera white balance setting or in post.

In your research, did you not come across Flash Exposure Compensation? Or why TTL does what it does? Like the fact that TTL's metering system is the same one your camera meters with - *reflective metering?* Reflective metering isn't exact and always wants to bring everything to a middle grey exposure (also known as midtones) so using Flash Exposure Compensation is a must to override what TTL thinks should be your flash exposure. No need to be changing aperture to change flash exposure. Changing aperture will change more than flash exposure, it will also change the ambient light exposure and depth of field as well.

My friend bought the V1 for canon and it has ETTL but on sony version it doesn't have option for ETTL.

E-TTL is just Canon's terminology for the version of TTL pretty much all brands use now so the TTL on the V1 for Sony will essentially be the same thing.

Great video! I do have a question you might have the answer to when using TTL mode, the light is flashing 5 times before taking a photo. In manual mode, it fires immediately. I cannot seem to find the problem for this and in your video, it looks to work just fine.

That is strange. Can you try putting your camera in automatic and flash to ttl and try again? I’m curious if it happens that way as well

You probably have your camera set to ‘rear curtain sync’. If you change the setting it should only fire once on TTL.

You can also take a photo in TTL mode, hold the TCM button and it will save those settings and change to manual so it will only flash once 👍 good for if you are taking multiple photos in the same location and want to keep the exposure the same

Great video. I don’t know how it’s work for you but I have my Godox v1 on TTL mode and my Sony a7iv on Priority aperture mode / the light come from the flash but it’s not affect the picture so it’s look like no flash photo

I was wanting to love this flash but I can’t seem to get the aperture to go lower than 8 on it . Also I get the strobe light action through ttl and can get a single beam through manual . Maybe it’s user error , but staring at the flash and having it strobe in your face sucks.

@@JosephValenti yes it did. I just got the v1s today and had mounted it on the A7iii when I came across this video. It’s the perfect intro to the auto TTL mode as I had never used a flash mode. Would now be looking at more settings and looking for the accessory kit.

You shouldn’t need a trigger. I feel like maybe your hotshoe mount is either malfunctioning on your camera or the flash itself. Do you have another camera or another flash to test with so help confirm that theory

After using this for a year I can’t say with confidence that it won’t break sadly. My hot shoe mount broke on it. Illl be coming out with a video soon to show how to fix it- but yea it just wasn’t built too great sadly

thank you sharing your experience. I am not fan of aperture mode because i would select F2.8 or F/4 and shutter speed is very often abobe sync speed. i prefer Manual mode, iso 100, set SS to sync speed 1/200sec and tune aperture to underexpose sky and, if needed, use ND filter or HSS. Then i use TTL on flash and play with flash compensation or, if useful, activate TCM on flash to know the ttl value chosen and use it in flash manual mode. I am not specialist but works not too bad.

manual mode, not shutter priority I would say. iso 100..800, not auto. so you decide if you stay below sync speed (without or with ND filter) or use HSS depending on sun light, ... if you have a ad300pro...

TTL is a completely different mode to manual mode so there is no over-riding. TTL is like automatic however you can adjust up to 3 stops brighter or lower than what it give you. You do not need to set your flash manual mode to 1/1, it have no effect on when your flash is in TTL mode. I hope this help.

​​@@nelius1981Not true. Sometimes TTL gets exposure wrong in that case use Flash Exposure Compensation (FEC). Most cameras allow an adjustment between 3 and 4 stops + or -. No need to adjust the aperture or ISO to compensate for a faulty TTL exposure.

Really good and simple video! Do you feel like the V1 is too much top heavy on a small mirrorless body? I’m torn between the V350 and the V1 for a fujifilm X-S10. I’ve seen a used v1 for the same price as a new V350, i’m sure it’s a good deal but i’m worried about the size and weight.

It’ is and might be too too heavy for smaller bodies. I broke mine on Sunday at a wedding simply from being top heavy :(

I am not quite sure that is an interesting one, never even thought of that scenario. A quick google search suggest that it shouldn't matter but I'd like to test that. A buddy of mine has a full manual lens I can see if I can get my hands on it. (You mean manual as in aperture adjustment and focus ring right?)

Should not matter because its only metering from what you focus on and if you really want to test this just switch your lens autofocus button off and give it a try.
