If it isn’t already planned, I’d like to suggest you do a video on using flash for macro photography. I’m trying to do some handheld macro with a flash. I’ve had some success, but would appreciate your view on this. I do mostly flowers and bugs outside, but would also like to try stuff stuff in my “studio” ( which is a table in my basement). BTW, I appreciate the videos you do, you have a knack for explaining things in a way that’s easy for me to understand. Keep up the good work.

QUESTION: The comparing example at 10:28 - I don't understand why the change of shutter speed doesn't affect the ambient light in the background...🤔Didn't we just learn that shutter lowering shutter speed will let in more ambient light (and vice versa)?

Hi Susanne, That's a good question. I should have said at this point that the ambient light is a lot less in that scene at 10:28 so even though I change the shutter speed, there is still not enough ambient light to affect the shot...I think I might have had the curtains closed for these photos to keep the amount of ambient light down. This part is more to show that changing the shutter speed doesn't affect the flash power of the shot. Thanks for watching 😁👍

:o Mind blown! I was super reluctant to get a flash because I figured it was just a cheaper alternative to a constant video light. But now knowing that the shutter doesn’t change the flash exposure, allowing for separate control of ambient and flash light, I know it’s more powerful for photography. Amazing! Thanks mike.

Since I am using an analog camera, my first pictures using the flash will be quite of a surprise ^^ Do you have a general recommendation or a rule of thumb for flashpower settings in a club environment with little ambient light and people moving and dancing? A low flash power and low shutter speed will be necessary I would assume, but how low is not „too low“ given an aperture of f8 or f11? Thanks very much :-)

Ah... Video is really big. Need to watch few times to completely understand. Voluminous informative contents are well packed with the stimulated time. Much awaited video. Initially I didn't know about flash photography. When I learned, it is completely new kind of photography. There is off camera flash concept, which has more powerful way to control light. Really interesting and difficult. We will explore many creative ways. For that we need 3 or more flash lights. At present, I have one flash. Due to limited budget available, unable to purchase more. In future, I will get it. Heartful thanks for making such wonderful video.

Thanks so much Ravi! It is such a difficult subject to learn, but when you understand the basics, it starts to make sense. When I first started, I just couldn’t get a good photo with flashes, but over time, I started to get better and started to get photographs that I was proud of. You can do it, just keep studying the basics and once you get those, you can build on them and really have a deep understanding of flash photography. It’s funny you should say that about the number of flashes, I’ve got a tutorial planned for single flash photography later in the year so keep an eye out for that one! I appreciate your video and the way you explain the settings and everything flash related. The only question I have is fo the APSC format cameras. I combined a fuji xt4 with a godox v1f with ar1 kit and I wanted to set the zoom for my prime 90mm f 2.0 but that’s the ff equivalent of 135mm...Should I just set the flash to it’s maximum zoom?

Hi Mike. I now have the Olympus E-M1 Mark III and am looking to start a flash system for it. I have some experience with Nikon and Nikon compatible (Phottix) speedlights and have had a transmitter and receivers for my 3 flashes. However, they are not compatible with Olympus. It seems that the best Godox-Olympos speedlight is now going to be the V860III. Since most of the Speedlights have built in transmitters and receivers, I would just want a transmitter so I can use one or multiple flashes off camera (I know I can have one on camera). From what I see, the correct models are Godox XProO Flash Trigger and any or multiple V860IIIO's with built in receivers. It is also my understanding that the trigger should fire the medium and larger units with built in receivers, but are those larger units compatible with Olympus. They don't seem to carry a camera name. Can you clarify a little?

You're right, get the XProO for then olympus/panasonic mount and the V860iii(o). The trigger will fire the bigger units, and the beauty with those bigger units is that they will work with any of the godox triggers, so if you were to change your camera system again, with something like thew AD600, all you would have to do is change the trigger for the correct camera brand. I actually learned alot - I don't do much flash photography, but I tend to use it when it snows or sometimes rains to capture the drops - Ps I have the Yongnuo also but I have rechargable battery packs for it : )

It is very much about trial and error...and I suppose its the same for photography in general...it always takes me a while to get warmed up and into the flow on a photography shoot. 👍

I'm using your video for my training and am conducting experiments with my Panasonic G9 and Godox TT685o flash to understand your points. First, I appreciate the video and am learning from it. I do have a question. At 6:25 you say (and I paraphrase) that as long as you're below the sync speed, the shutter speed doesn't matter because it will take in all of the power of the flash. If by, "doesn't matter," you mean that exposure won't be affected, that is not the result I am getting. I keep the aperture at f6.3 and the ISO at 320 for all of the tests. Then I set the flash power to 1/1 and shoot the same scene (my small office with window shutters closed, bouncing the off-camera flash off the ceiling) with shutter speeds ranging from 1/10 to 1/1000. Just for fun I did the same sequence of shots with the flash power at 1/16, then 1/32, and again at 1/125. In every test I see the exposure changing between every single shot, just as I do with ambient pictures. Did I misunderstand you by thinking that "doesn't matter" means exposure won't be affected? And if I did misunderstand, why did you bother to point out that you excluded shutter speed from your demonstration (only including aperture and ISO changes)? What did you mean? Thanks again!

So in your case I'm guessing, as you have cut out all ambient light, as you get over your sync speed, the flash has gone into high speed sync and in this advanced feature, it will reduce the power of the flash as you increase the speed of the shutter. I probably should have mentioned that if you go into the HSS function this changes as you go over the sync speed. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Good tut, Mike. Perhaps a bit long for a “beginners part 1”. I’ll bet many viewers will replay/pause the vid several times to absorb the content. Most folks in my circle shun flash, mainly because of the challenges of exposing for both ambient and flash. (It’s a small circle, OK? 😁) People stay with available/constant light sources - easy w/modern LED gear. Light bouncing/diffusion and zooms are easier concepts. But problems come up when managing two exposure settings. More so with multiple strobes. I remember flash meters and guide numbers. My old Vivitar units would fry the electronics in today’s cams. Useful examples in the vid (everyone is a ham). Kinda boils down to test shoot, chimp, adjust until we get it right - gotta be a better way.

It's such a huge subject that it was a challenge keeping it down to this! 😆 When I was learning the basics, I took a lot of bad photos for a long time and it wasn't until a fellow photographer taught me these principles...then I started to get it and started getting better results. It very much is a case of trial and error...I think it's one of the best ways to learn, as you start to see what works but more importantly what doesn't work and through repetition, you get a feel for it and it becomes more natural. 👍 Thanks for watching! 😁

Hi guys! I’m new to photography and I just bought my Canon 1300D last month. Just today, I took my camera to capture some indoor photos and set it to auto mode. The kit lens came with 18-55mm lens with AF mode so I switch it to auto focus. I was using the viewfinder and every time I press the shutter button halfway, it did its usual auto focusing sound but what came after that is the flickering of the flash before the click sound of the auto focus. I switched to manual focus and it didn’t flicker then I turned on the live view, it was normal. It’s just that every time I use the viewfinder plus auto focusing, I always get this flickering flash with a buzz sound similar like those of electrical wirings. This usually happens when I take photos in dark places or in darker lightings. How do you think should I fix this? I’m worried I might have broken my DSLR.

I don't think you have broken your camera. This sounds like it's an autofocus aid with the flash. When it flickers, it's basically giving the autofocussing system enough light in the scene to focus properly. In Auto mode, it will do everything for you, so what it is doing is making sure the focus is good before taking the shot. Does that make sense?

Noob (Flash) question. If I want to mix in a good amount of ambient light and this use a slower shutter speed of let's say 1/40 or even slower, will I get motion blur? Do I choose fill light on my Sony a7 III or slow sync? I'm guessing fill light. But what about motion blur? Does the flash always freeze the motion even at slowe shutterspeeds? I want to use flash as a fill in for indoor portraits if necessary.

Good question Luc. Either fill or slow sync will work ok for slower shutter speeds. You will get motion blur if the shutter speed gets too slow for the motion in your hands. If you are at your lowest shutter speed you can get before motion blur occurs, the best bet would be to increase the ISO or open up the aperture and then decrease the flash power, so you have more flash to ambient light. Hi Mike thanks for such a great video for flash especially for sony a7iii.. My problem with flash is the WB. In this video you telling us to select from WB flash mode.. And when i saw your flash setup in ur another channel (bubble) i saw u using day light instead of flash! What is your advice about WB for flash (sony a7iii) ? Thanks in advance :)

Good question Peter. To be honest, I sometimes forget to switch it to flash WB...as I did in the bubble video. 🤦🏻‍♂️ If you shoot in RAW, the saved image will store all of your WB info, so it doesn't matter too much as you can fix it, if the WB is off when editing. It is good practice to get your WB right in camera though. So when I remember, I switch it to flash WB. 👍

This is a really great video, and very helpful to me for understanding how to logically set up a shot using a flash. One thing: can you elaborate on your note about the display when using a mirrorless camera? I have an EOS M50, and I can't find the setting you mentioned. At least, it isn't obvious to me, but maybe if I understood better what you meant, I could work around this. Thanks again for the great video.

Thanks very much. With the sony, there is a live view display setting that switches between showing a preview of the final image with the current settings and just a view where it brightens up the view so you can compose the shot. I'm not sure how it works with the M50 though ... I hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching 😁👍

I use flash all the time for macro (with diffuser hood) and use the Yongnuo flash. I use rechargeable batteries and have three sets in my bag. I switch them out as they start recharging slower and then charge them all when I get home. My questions is about using M rather than TTL on the flash. I may have missed it but what advantage is there to using M and changing flash power or TTL and using flash exposure compensation? I always use TTL and Flash exp comp for macro work but wondered if there is an advantage to using M and just dialing up or down the power levels.

That's a good question Philip. I've found with the manual settings, I can dial in the settings I want and they will stay exactly the same. When I've used ttl, if the exposure changes sometimes my flashes will change abruptly or the ratios will change in the shot. I suppose its about having complete control over the settings and the flash power without leaving it up to the camera/flash to decide. I'd say if you're getting good results from using ttl and it works for you, that's great. 😁 Thanks for watching. 👍

Thank you so much for this video!! I think i am gonna have to watch it several more times to absorb all the information. One note, i google the max sync shutter speed for the a7iii and it up at 250. Your video states its 200. Is there a big difference between the two speeds? Or I getting myself confused with 2 different things?

No worries, there is a lot to take it, but once you get it, it'll all make sense! With the A7iii, I found that at 1/250 second I started to get just a little strip of darkness along the top of the frame...this is why I always say 1/200 with this camera. Thanks for watching. 😁👍

Does this mean that I need to use Manual setting on my Canon instead of AV priority? I’m new at all of this and don’t use Manual but need to add flash when shooting our properties. I use bracketed settings for 3 different exposures. How do I integrate using AV priority and my V1 flash? Can I not do bracketed shots and use a flash system on Auto? Would love to only use the flash on auto if possible.

Yes you can. This is more of a way to learn the principles of flash photography and not a "you must do it this way" Kind of tutorial. There are many ways to get the same result and if bracketing with your flash in auto works for you, then go for it. 👍

I have a flash that sat in the cupboard for three years as I could never make sense of it. Session 1 ... was a clear ah ha moment for me, session 2 and 3 were really good. For the first time, and with pauses to harass my wife and the dog with practice (poor dog hates the recharge whine) , I feel confident enough to use the thing. Simple explanation of M rather than TTL & how flash power, camera speed and aperture affect the result were easily followed. Thanks Mike.
