Thanks, kassiniru. 'I Need You By My Side' was composed by Hudson Whittaker ('Tampa Red') in 1936. It was recorded by him and also by Merline Johnson. As you can hear, it is a short 16-bar [8 + 8] tune, beautiful in its simplicity of melody and chord progression - the Magnolia Chord Progression: I - I7 - IV - IVm. Tuba Skinny play it in the key of G (as they do with several of the tunes in their repertoire). Most traditional jazz bands hardly play anything in G; and would have transposed this one into the 'easier' key of F (the key in which Merline Johnson recorded it). The original Tampa Red recording is lower still - in E flat.

Thanks very much for this, kassiniru, and for filming it so well. It's a new song to me. I have never heard the original recording from about 1937 by Merline Johnson - and I bet that goes for most people alive today. What is clear is that it's a 16-bar song (8 + 8) that Erika sings in the key of G and that harmonically and melodically it has much in common with the first 16 bars of the 1917 pop song 'Girl of My Dreams'.

Pops Coffee, thank you for the compliment and for the comment. The song is new to me too, but Tuba Skinny is very good at announcing the tunes, so that I only had to figure out how to spell Merline. Then I got some matches on Google.

Thank you and well done, kassiniru. I find it necessary to consult Mr. Google a great deal in trying to learn about this old music. For example, he has helped me discover that Merline Johnson also recorded 'Sold It To The Devil', 'Running Down My Man' and 'Got a Mind To Ramble' - all of which are part of Tuba Skinny's repertoire. Somebody in Tuba Skinny (?Erika) must have a collection of Merline's recordings.
