Rare in cultivation, hard to grow, and stunningly beautiful, winter growing tuberous sundews are one of the highlights of our botanical collection. Damon has been growing tuberous sundews for decades from tubers and seeds, building our fantastic collection of plants. In this two-part video, he will talk you through the collection and tell you more about these fascinating plants. Be sure to watch Part 2 for more!

I recently got my hands on seven D. platypoda tubers - surprisingly difficult to find, even down here in Australia. They’re my dream Drosera, looking forward to see them pop up in… five or so months😆

I grow a lot of orchids that require cool conditions (under 70f) so my grow tent is always 55-65f. Is that appropriate for the "cool season"?

If you shortened the day length on the lights, it would! Check out Damon’s other video about growing tuberous sundews!

I recently obtained some fresh seed of Drosera gunniana from Conara, Tasmania that I plan on planting at the end of next summer, as it is currently too late here for planting in the US. I have attempted tuberous drosera before with some more advanced species tubers (squamosa, zonaria, ect.) obtained from the late Allen Lowrie, but I was unable to keep them alive. Knowing gunniana is more forgiving then those species I decided to try again. Would this species do well with the light provided on an east-facing windowsill with around 5-7 hours of direct sun in the fall and winter? I do have LED lights for my other plants but they are on for 12+ hours a day.

If you can give it the same day length as the natural winter day lengths, it will be happy! We have ours in full sun, but it’s the winter cycle or shorter days and lots of clouds. You can grow them under lights too, very happily, but with shortened photo periods and make sure the lights don’t heat the area up. They’ll need those cooler temps too! Lights will probably work best and produce the best looking plants 😊

Hi I moved my Drosera Tubaestylis indoors with one full spectrum A19 grow light for growing vegetables since veggies need a lot of light like most tuberous Drosera’s and most carnivorous plants in general the temperature in my room and around the inside of my house is 65 at night and 72 during the day rarely it’s over 75 inside my house is that go if not what do you suggest I can do for improvement also my budget is very tight and I mean tight
@California_Carnivores
@California_Carnivores Жыл бұрын
That should be a god temperature range for them - sometimes we reduce the photo period by a few hours to mimic winter sunlight

Can these be grow indoors in a cooler house? Also would I be able to have it outside in zone 7b.
@California_Carnivores

They’re a little tricky to grow. You can grow them indoors, and that is probably best, but you’ll most likely need grow lights set to the natural light patterns of the winter sun!

Question can I grow Drosera Tubaestylis outside in Miami Florida
@California_Carnivores
@California_Carnivores Жыл бұрын
That may be difficult; it depends on your ambient conditions September - May. They need short photoperiods and they need to be kept under 80 degrees, preferably below the high 70’s even.

Between December and February our temperatures are between the late 50s early 60s sometimes though not often 48ish all the way to around 75-79 sometimes over 80 though not always I think I might just pull it of thought with our summers being rainy here I’ll use my patio for the protection from rain
