Jon, it's very peaceful to listen to you always. My request to you to make a video on variety of edible tubers for those of us worldwide who can't physically attend the punpun festival. If possible a video documentary of the festival with the details could be uploaded for benefit of us. Many thanks for your presence. ❤ love from India.

This is such an important topic! I grow taro and sweet potato in subtropical Australia. They are both excellent crops here

Very interesting. Where I come from, tubers are still our main staple food although we are eating more and more grains too. I don't know if the cultivars we grow nowadays can be perennial but I'm certainly going to find out. Fascinating! Thank you for this video.

I live in a cold temperate zone of North America...here sunchokes (jerusalem artichokes) do very well, and are a plant and forget them until you need them food that overwinters just fine. Makes a pretty 8 foot hedge in summer. They spread on their own, unless you have a gopher problem. Keep away from fruit trees as sunchokes are allelopathic to some other plants. Best stored in ground until needed.

One root crop that's safe to eat off the ground would be jicama. Not as starchy as other root crops (pretty watery) but if you're hungry and don't have the time to prepare food, you can start munching on them.

we have something called Mandioca (manioc) here in brazil and it is great!
@TaLeng202310 ай бұрын
Cassava is pest-resistant too. Probably coz it's toxic unless prepared.

Manioc is a really good tasting food.

I cook taro in Thailand as we cook potatoes in the west. Just not easy to grow where I am because the soil is very hard with a lot of clay so they stay very small.
@TaLeng202310 ай бұрын
I would have grown them if i have land. Easier to grow for home gardeners than cereals. Only sad part of living in tropical lowlands is we can't grow potatoes. None of the rootcrops we have substitute well for it.

I would love to learn about all the tubers we can eat and how to prepare. I just learnt that the roots of yellow evening primrose are edible, in spring beforecthey flower, spreads easily from seed too...in fact the whole plant is edible and meducinal 💪....this is the lost knowledge that is coming back, relying on the foods that were God given right from the start 🎉Katrina blairs book on the 13 "weeds" found earthwide is incredible.

I have long suspected that cooked starchy root vegetables are our specie's original and true 'bread' (a staple food).

I Don't think so , More Likely a Food when there is not much Meat Around , Like During Winter ! During Famine !

There's a reason meat and potatoes are so damn tasty. Europeans and middle easterners have had bread for thousands of years though.
@jeffskinner122610 ай бұрын
Or like when you exist as a hunter gatherer and killing meat every day isn't probable or realistic, so you resort to gathering starchy root vegetables out of necessity much like our ancestors did for appx. 65,000 generations. Hence the name 'hunter gatherers.'@@jimmyhvy2277
