Easily the best review of this fine watch on KZbin. Thanks for your thoughtful and fair review. I do think the 36 looks great on your wrist size. Would also point out that Tudor used the same sized hands and indices on the 36 and 41 which makes the 36 dial a bit more “crowded” than the 41. Yet the 41 looks slightly too large on most wrists. I think Tudor should have produced a 39 and called it at that.

a bit late to the party but just wanted to say that I think Tudor mods the ETA 2824-2 enough that they can call it an in-house movement, a bunch of other companies basically just make a 2824-2 clone and call it in-house anyway. Tudor changes out the shock absorber from Incabloc to KIF, same used by Rolex, among others. And they change the regulator from the standard ETAChron to Triovis, which is used by Vacheron Constantine, among others. They also take the time out to put in a different set bridge from the 2824 so there's no phantom date setting, which some manufacturers are too lazy to do.

I've owned this watch for the better part of 6 months. Honestly, my biggest disappointment is with its accuracy. I wouldn't trust the readings on any time grapher too much. My BB36 on my time grapher reads -1s/day, but in real life it's more like +6s/day. None of the different resting positions (dial up, crown up, or crown down) help slows the movement either. I was in a similar position as you. I was deciding between this watch, the blue dial 3-6-9 OP 116000, and the 114270. After buy this watch new, I really didn't connect with it. Mainly do to its accuracy and that nasty crown tube. I ended buying a used 114270 that runs about +2s/day. It's more comfortable to wear (the crown doesn't stick into my wrist, and it's a bit lighter). Also, I like the overall aesthetics more. IMO, BB36 looks more sporty while the 36mm OP looks more dressy. However, the 36mm Explorer has a nice balance between the two. Sure the BB36 has a better clasp and better lume, but it just lack the same charm as the Explorer. If I had waited another month, and found out about the BB58, I most certainly would bought that instead of the BB36. However, now I'm happy with my Explorer, so I'm not sure if I really need or want a Tudor in my collection.
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear you didn't connect with the Tudor, but that happens. I had the same experience with the 39mm Rolex Explorer. I still think the Explorer design is one of the best, but something about the size and scale of the watch didn't work for me I guess, I never really was totally happy with it. I probably should have gotten a 36mm Explorer like yourself.
@coltconley5 жыл бұрын
Beautiful watch. Perfect size (6.5" wrist here). I don't have a problem with an ETA movement, but there is no "top- grade", regulate-able, 2824. They should have used the 2892 instead. That's the top grade movement you're thinking of. Everything else the exact same, it would be worth $3000.00 with that movement. I (personal opinion) wouldn't pay more than $2000 with the 2824 in this particular watch. Would love to see a white dial variant, like the rolex OP 36mm in white (for comparison). Maybe next next year (2020).

Glad you got to review it and get your thoughts before your next purchase. I bought that one and a BB because I adore the snowflake hands (in part because it's a unique feature of the brand). I think in-house movements are nice but I think there's a bit of marketing hype around them.

It’s a Chronometer Grade ETA, or at least mine is. Came with a COSC certificate and a serial number for the movement. To everyone complaining about the non in-house movement, bear in mind many in house movements are not COSC certified. Mine is still within COSC parameters after three years.
@mikec34544 жыл бұрын
BTW, not sure if this is a coincidence but there is a member on Watchuseek whose username matches your channel's name, who asked questions to the forum about ETA movements and what grade they are. If that was you, you should have given some credit to your fellow watch community for helping. Going to assume it was you - in any case, you brushed off ETA movements in this video but it took some convincing in the forum for you to see ETA top grade is an incredible movement.

Really great review, thanks. It is my watch to keep. I tried a 114270 and never bonded with it. The hands for me is one of the best parts of the watch. The oversized crown and extended tube add character and some heft to it also. I got mine on the aged leather but enjoy the NATO that came with it. The NATO adds a different visual to the watch. It has a different case than an older explorer. It is bolder and to me looks more prominent on the wrist. This watch never did have to grow in me, it was an instant bond. I think you liked it, but sounded like you have a few lingering doubts. I think of the watch as more of an explorer style than a dive style. I'm glad you got a chance to try it out and hope you decide on it. It was a 2hr drive for me to see it in person. Looked at it walked out then right back in and got it. Haven't regretted it yet. A watch you might also consider is the IWC 36mm Pilot. Best review I have seen on this watch yet. Keep up the reviews. Thanks

Thanks for watching Charlie. You're right I have some doubts. I like the watch, don't get me wrong, but I think part of me feels like I'd wish I had gotten something else. The big draw for this watch for me is the price. Yeah it looks great, it's great quality, and there are only a few small things that I could complain about - but it's quite a good value I think. That said I think I like the OP36 better. I'll need to do a lot of thinking before I make a decision.

Best review of this watch ever...I saw and put this one on the wrist a few weeks ago, it seems like the Tudor's take on the Explorer, but it definitely has it's own style and is a beautiful piece. After looking at it more I couldn't shake the feeling that it has something off...but I just cannot put my hands around it, either the strange oversized hands or the lug size, which I didn't knew at the time it was 19 mm... Anyway, it's a good quality beautiful watch, but when it comes to the dial, I still think the explorer one's dial is absolutely perfect and any modification to it would make I worse, but I could modify some things about the Tudor.

This Tudor just feels a bit cheap. It was a very boring watch on the wrist and I was able to buy it way below retail price new which I still declined. I was interested in it at first but after wearing it I was very disappointed. You'd better get your hands on a GS or if you have a bit more cash to spare, the Rolex Explorer 36mm with whatever movement. Don't get me wrong, I like Tudor, and especially the Black Bay 58, but this watch just feels like no man's land. It's not a luxury watch and for the steep price you don't get much value. I'd rather buy for the same money a Longines with some interesting complications. I am not to keen on Omega either although I like the Speedmaster Tokyo, but saying you like it more than Rolex tells me you have never had either of those brands on your wrists. Even the Oyster Perpetual 36mm grape feels like 3 levels above this (that watch is actually pretty cool if you have a small wrist).

My BB36 has run bang on 0/day for the last 7 days. On its worst day it will gain a second. Tudor knows how to regulate a watch. I commented before that I was underwhelmed when I tried this on but I'm still banging my head as to whether I'm buying this. Are there any owners to comment? Echo the hour/minute markers are too large. They seem to be pulled right off of the 41mm. No AR coating is disappointing. ETA vs in-house is fine I suppose too, but you get a Tudor in-house with more complications and larger dial (which always costs more) for $1000 more. Albeit this is my preference. Hi Guy. Great review. I've had this watch for 11 months and I'm quite happy with its versatility and performance. I completely agree with your observations about the lug width. I have a seven inch wrist and I sometimes feel that I should have purchased the BB41-- a 20mm bracelet would have been better; however, i think the watch retains an appropriate degree of presence on the wrist thanks, in large part, to the high contrast dial. T-shaped endlinks like those on the Rolex 214270 would also have amplified the masculinity of the BB36. As it is now, my wife is wearing it on a nearly daily basis since my recent purchase of a Tudor North Flag which is, irrefutably, made for a man.

Thanks for checking out the review Neil. I think different endlinks and/or a 20mm lug width would have really done this watch a lot of good. I like that it's more conservative in size, and couldn't see myself going for the 41mm version, but at the same time this one feels a bit too small.

Great review. How would you compare the quality of the finish compared to the Explorer that you owned? Is it basically Rolex quality case and bracelet with Tudor design and ETA movement? Or am I giving it too much credit?
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
Good question. It's hard to give a 100% honest evaluation since I owned the Explorer for many months and wore it a lot in the time and had this watch for a week, but I'll try. I would say the quality of both the polishing and brushed finish on the Rolex is perhaps slightly better, but it's not a mile ahead. They're close. Of course Rolex uses more expensive materials like gold on the markers and hands, but I doubt that's really a factor for most people. I think it's close enough to the same quality that we would be splitting hairs in favor of the Rolex. Obviously the Rolex 3132 inhouse movement is much more sophisticated, but the main differences are mostly stylistic in nature.
@ronpower77906 жыл бұрын

Amen to that. Finally someone who is intelligent enough to realise that "in-house" does not mean "more quality". Of course when one pays $3000 for a fucking watch, one expects to get a proper built piece with a more original and better movement. Unfortunately that is not the case with this Tudor. It is sad that a $3000 watch has an ETA 2824 inside but at the same time it is a fucking tank of a movement who will not certainly let you down. I know because I have a Certina DS Action Diver which has the same movement - but it will only cost you around $800... go figure...

I did some research on the 2824 that tudor uses. It's Top grad from eta and they also do some mods to it and prob regulated it to 5 positions. There are $8K + IWC watches that use ETA movements.
@dpjyule5 жыл бұрын
This top grade ETA movement is very accurate. It is more accurate than some in house movements so could be viewed as preferable. It works particularly well for this watch as the 2824 is quite a thin movement whereas the Tudor in house movement is absolutely not a thin movement. The original black bay was a chunky watch (I bought when first released) and believe the in house variant is a little thicker now as a result of accommodating the movement. As I have had several years of just being 1 second out per day I don’t see the benefit in an in house movement. Rolex themselves have only just managed to match that ETA performance in my experience. This is more accurate than my SubC and GMT2. My new Datejust which has the latest gen of Rolex movement is perfect - I mean have had for 10 days and does not seem to have lost or gained a single second which is unheard of. All in all the use of ETA gets some stick but Tudor have created a well built watch with nice finishing and an accurate movement. For a watch with such a low price could not ask for more really!

I think they will grow on me over time, at least they’re unique. I don’t have a problem with it having an ETA movement, at least it will be affordable to maintain. I also like that it has an Explorer 1 look, without the Explorer 1 price.
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
The 36 does wear fairly small, go check them both out at a store, and see what you think. The 41 might be perfect for you.

I have nothing against a well regulated ETA 2824, but a glossy black dial + absence of AR coating : not good. Will look cheap under bad lightning, exact same reason why I sold my Explorer 214270. Also agree that 19 mm lug width is neither here nor there
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
Yeah a glossy dial and no AR coating makes for a lot of glare and reflection. I think a matte dial or AR would have been a good design choice.
@frafa836 жыл бұрын
The AR coating scratch very easily, and within years it will lost its transparency. The nature sapphire glass will last forever.

I think most folks regret buying a Tudor... in the sense that they really want a Rolex and they compromised on what they bought when they should have just saved longer. The only watch Tudor makes that interest me as unique is the Pelagos (ceramic bezel, titanium, amazing bracelet).
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
I could see that being the case. In a way I would feel like I'd be buying the Tudor because I kinda like it and it's much more affordable then my prefered Rolex.

@marcoferay5751 Жыл бұрын
They should have made a 38 or 39mm. My dilemma is that 36 is too small for my taste and definitively does not satisfy me (my wrist is same size as yours) and 41 i am afraid is gonna be too big lol Now the new models are out with the 39 but I don’t really like the dials in terms of colours, they are not proper black or proper blue, does it make sense?
@GeordsYouTube6 жыл бұрын
Great watch! Looks great fits my taste right now. However the new black dial oyster perpetual in 36 will look just as good in 20+ years. I’ve liked the similar style Seikos since 1994 when I was gifted this obsession at 15 lol
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
Something about the OP36 dial that is appealing is that it's at least a little more unique then this dial. In my collection, having a Submariner already, it might be overkill to have 2 watches with almost the same dials.
@GeordsYouTube6 жыл бұрын
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews the sunburst dial of the OP is really appealing, I find sunburst dials hypnotising.. lost looking at the dial and not even noticing the time pass.. January 2019 is when I turn 40 the OP will be watch to mark this occasion, even if I have to wait a little longer to get the money together
@librarianrobert74265 жыл бұрын
I've tried on both this and the OP 36. The OP 36 wears significantly larger--a bit too big for me, in fact. But the lines of the OP case are so beautiful! I do like the idea of having a good, robust ETA that any good watchmaker could service. It's a tough choice! Both watches are absolutely brilliant.

I don't think that you understand people that are unhappy with generic movement instead of inhouse. In certain price point buyers want to know that work put in creating that watch is reflected in price, if you just regulate an ETA/put a Tudor logo on the rotor it's not enough for the price. I know that the movement is just one part of the watch but compare it to Nomos, inhouse, affordable and still great design.
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
Nomos is a bit of a rare bird, great quality and value at this tier.
@Amen206 жыл бұрын
Yes, but you also can get an Omega with an inhouse (even co-axial) in Tudors price range... I mean if you dig the design it's all that really maters.
@TheSC20k6 жыл бұрын
To be fair, Nomos' movements are based on the Peseux 7001 - except for their new in-house automatic.
@Xithz6 жыл бұрын
You're not necessarily wrong, I just think you're missing the point slightly. What you and most people completely forget is the fact that ETA makes incredibly solid and reliable movements. The ETA 2824-2 and 2892-2 in their top/chronometer grade will easily be as accurate as anything Rolex produces if regulated properly. They're insanely durable and reliable as well as easily serviced. There is a reason why basically the entire watch industry stopped making in house movements and went to ETA, they were simply better and more reliable. People have forgotten about that. Are they the best and most exclusive movement in the world? No they're not, I agree with you. But they're fucking great movements :) Side note, Omegas in house calibers aren't really in house, they're an Omega design manufactured by ETA exclusively for Omega.
@michaelbishop91576 жыл бұрын
they have done a lot more than just stick a tudor logo on it
@CarloDimacali6 жыл бұрын
I love the price, just within the limits of what I would term as attainable but without the guilt. I don't mind the ETA movement. In fact I prefer a more affordable movement like an NH35 or alike, as long as the timekeeping is not affected. My ultimate watch is excellent craftsmanship, but with the heart of a workhorse, that will run forever and if it did need servicing, you can go to your nearest, favorite watchmaker to be affordably serviced. Sizewise, I prefer it to be around 40mm.
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
They do have the 41mm version now, so perhaps that's something to look into.

Before I knew any better about watches, I never thought there would be a maintenance fee you have to spend in every five years. Watches are similar to cars. One has to be able to purchase it, and one has to be able to maintain it as well. You cannot bring Patel and those high-end watches to a random shop and fix it. Otherwise, the official customer service centers will never accept and perform services on those watches. After knowing this, I am not too picky with the movements anymore. IWC charges 750$ish for their valju chronograph, I cannot imagine how much luxury watch brands charge for their in-house movements.
@muirhouseterrace6 жыл бұрын
The price is a disgrace. I just yank the crown off my watch with pliers and give the insides a liberal squirt of WD 40 and then put the crown back on with super glue. After that it requires no further maintenance and it is perfectly correct twice a day.

Thorough & spot on review. My thoughts would be to consider to try on the new Tudor 58 if the style is of interest and overlapping the sub for you plus the new 39mm OPs (rather than smaller stable mates) and see if these connect. Just a thought

Nice review. I'm all for ETA movement, very cost effective for service. I'm disappointed with no anti-reflective on the crystal. 19mm for the bracelet width, is kind of a pain in the ass, but i was thinking of buying it with the bracelet and trying to work a deal for the leather strap, you are then covered for an option.

I thought the crown stuck out too far too before I hand the watch in my hands. In person, it's really not a lot in my opinion. Sure it could be flush to the case like any Rolex Oyster watch and that would be fine, but the way it is isn't really a problem.

I see no big deal in a in-house movement when the caseback is solid.
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
I think most people would assume an implied level of higher quality with an inhouse movement, though I don't know if that would be entirely true or not, but that is the perception.

I am all in for Tudors. I have the bb in house movement with black bazel, i have the bronze and now i want to purchase the gmt. One downside could be the fact it's bulky a little bit. But not that much. If you have a rather bigger wrist, the black bays looks perfect.
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
I might be getting my hands on a BB Diver in the not to distant future to do a review on. Hopefully that comes through, I'm looking forward to that, although it's the older ETA model, which is some ways I think I might prefer to the newest version. We shall see.
@polucovekpolukomarac6 жыл бұрын
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews no doubt that the ETA is as impressive as the in-house.See, I live in Moscow, there we have Rolex dealer but we don't have Tudor dealers in Russia, so i haven't seen an eta bb in person. I think it is good for around $2500. It is a Tudor not Seiko. There is a brand and design value you have to consider. It doesn't pretend to be another watch like for example Steinhart and other Rolex homages.
