Great video as always! I prefer Patek Phillips, Vacheron Constantin, and Audemars Piguet. But then again, living in Geneva, you are spoilt for choice. Really recommend anyone who visits Geneva to visit the Patek Phillips museum or the many boutique watch makers in this small city!

Brilliant! Informative about the Rolex range and honest to boot. Especially the last 10 minutes as to the real "why" and "how" to buy a luxury watch. Nothing is financially sadder than a "man" with a payment on his Rolex, a lease on his BMW, and a HELOC in addition to the mortgage on his refinanced home. Top marks. Very enjoyable.

My father's Dream was to own a Escalade and a Rolex. Now he was just a middle class man (who never had Expensive desires.) Yet, just those two items he wanted within his life before one day passing away. Kinda like Most people have a Bucket list. His just had OWN a ROLEX an a ESCALADE!!! He saved up (and behind my mother's back) came home one day with a ESCALADE. Now my father ALWAYS placed us kids, and grandchildren and Most of all his WIFE FIRST!! (Honestly, they don't make men like him anymore!) I know I at least CANT find one!!! However, 5 years prier to his passing he was also able to walk into a Jewelry Store to walk out with his VERY OWN ROLEX!!! Towards the End of his life he wasn't able to drive anymore. And being on his 3rd ESCALADE (He would trade them in once paid off, usually within 3 years time. Just to Purchase the latest which had came out on the market.) But he still continued to wear his Rolex, he would have benifited from this video actually!!! Because he only knew of the status which ROLEX was about. Never knowing actually how to work it!!! Infact, once he had sent his watch in to New York to have it "fixed" in his mind. He hadn't known that Rolex's have a basic memory within them. (He thought his was broke!) Well he Ended up purchasing a watch safe that would rotate the Rolex within it. So YES, Your informative video he would have HELPED HIM OUT!!! Now, it's is actually the aniversary of my father's death. 6 years ago today. And I decided to pull out his ROLEX, and wear it myself. So now your video has actually taught me about them and how to work it and Enjoy it and ALL THE MEMORIES. I Hope it's NOT Passa' to be wearing a man's watch. But as family goes, I'm the only one in the family who will RESPECT and Enjoy his watch. I was the only child to have stayed by his side to also Enjoy ALL THE GREAT MEMORIES WITCH GO WITH THE ROLEX ASWELL!!!! (It was to adventually go to my son one day. However, that's a WHOLE OTHER STORY!) NOT RESPONSIBLE ENOUGHT!!!! Well anyway, I'm sorry this is SO LONG. But I wanted to thank You for making this video so that I may enjoy his watch and his memories that go along with it on this aniversary!!!! IT STARTED RIGHT BACK UP, WITH NO PROBLEMS!!! (Even after being in the box for 6 years!) THANK YOU!!!!!💖

Simply the best Video on watches I have seen on YT, a few years ago I inherited a rolex from my grandfather but my parents didnt tell me. When I became an adult though they told me and I became really fascinated by the watch. I now own a Submariner and I am never going to get rid of it. Thx for the video it is the ultimate guide, I would love if you were to do a similar Video for some other Brands such as Breitling, IWC, Omega?

Lechilla93 Breitling is a garbage watch. They lose 30-50 percent just when you walk out the store with a new one. A watch is not an investment but when you drop 5k+ on a watch go with a solid brand. Patek Philipe, Jaeger Lê Coutre, Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin and Rolex. If you buy anything else buy used.

This guy says it’s a status symbol yes but it’s also an investment. My dad bought an Explorer 2 in 1973 for $500. The watch is worth 12k to 15k now. I bought a Submariner used a few years ago and it’s already worth thousands more than I paid for it. I will pass both of these watches down to my two sons.

I have a (sort-of) watch collection and 3 out of the four watches I have are Rolexes. After I graduated college my dad gave me his old day date and ever since I've been in love with the brand. The quality and craftsmanship is fantastic. My dad's that I received as a gift is 10+ years old, been serviced once, and the thing runs like a charm! In my opinion if you're looking to get into the world of luxury watches, a Rolex should be the first watch you pick up (or an Omega if you don't have that much money.)

There are very reputable secondary market dealers that sell preowned Rolexes or other luxury watches. I think by law they have to list the watches as preowned but many are bought at an AD, sold or flipped to a grey market dealer and actually have never been worn. Most secondary market Rolexes are more expensive than retail, they are the ones that have long waiting lists at ADs. I personally don't think eBay is a reliable place to buy watches. Prestige Time and Watchbox are terrific. As you mentioned even if it is not the manufacture warranty get all box and papers, hang tags etc. It helps to insure the watch is authentic and helps if you want to sell it later. Good vid. Forgot to mention Bob's watches, great place to get a preowned Rolex.

Hi Anthony, great video! Buying Yacht Master first was a good move!!! I think you missed just one but very important thing: Rolex new Rolex Superlative Chronometer Standard (introduced in 2016) which is -2 to +2 seconds per day which is better then traditional Swiss Chronometer certification they used before (-4 to +6 seconds). Sets them apart from most by far... Certainly more luxury watch videos!!! Omega, Breitling and also some higher ends such as Patek, JLC and AP.

Thank you for a very insightful video. I have a question. I remember hearing that a formal watch should have black leather strap with white face and very clean/simple case with almost no decoration. Since most Rolexes do not fit this criteria, is it correct to assume that most of these well known Rolex models are not preferable for formal events?

Hi, love the great overview in a way that fits the channel. One thing that i thought might have been relevant is the current state of Rolex stainless steel sports models that you would be "lucky" to get at retail because the grey market prices are at times even double or triple the normal retail. Reason i bring this up is because the way it sounds from the video is that potential buyers should be looking for deals even at an AD when in the current market, finding these sports models like the Daytona, GMT, Submariner and even the Explorer may already be equivalent to what used to be a discount. Anyway, great video as always, just my two cents! Thanks for all your content.

It stopped self winding about 10 years ago and I sent it to Rolex for service. The service was $750. I know, that sounds high, but it's back and perfect. I was dating my girlfriend for about four Months before she realized my watch was Rolex. She was impressed. I never brought it up because my Rolex is for me, not anyone else.

Great video Antonio! It's just a shame that some models are never available in store if you are a new collector (i.e. no past experience with the authorized dealer). Some potential long term watch collectors are being put into 3-10 year waiting lists just to get the watch they want (steel Submariner, Pepsi GMT/Batman and Daytona). This is just not acceptable for a luxury brand. This really kills it for me as I want the experience of buying brand new. It's a real shame, because it is impossible for a watch lover to buy a brand new steel Submariner, GMT or Daytona in store and remember that moment for the rest of their life. Grey market dealers are the ones to blame. Some old clients just order dozens of watches only to resell at an insane profit. I would never feed that mindset! Let's hope Rolex fixes this!

Buy a platinum Daytona and you get what you want. If you have no money for it I don’t think the AD wants you as a customer

Darren Toh Well... give me the name of one buyer that got a Platinum Daytona as his first Rolex. 🙂 No one starts a collection with the most valuable stuff. As a costumer, I would never walk into any AD to get a 30-50k watch without past experience. Maybe some Datejusts. Moreover, the only models I truly appreciate are the Submariner and Daytona. Maybe the GMT BLNR. No one wants to buy 5-10 watches they don't like only to get into a "list" to acquire the models they really wanted in the first place. Tough situation for true appreciators of watchmaking and craftsmanship because sadly there's too many people trying to make a quick buck with these models.

Great overall guide. There are a lot of KZbin Rolex videos but none as visually comprehensive and informative as this. Although this channel is generally about style and fashion, this video covers more than most specialist watch channels which don't cover the movements and generally just talk about design. Congratulations.

I don’t buy the “functional watch” argument for buying a Rolex. Today most decent watches are “functional.” I also don’t buy the “buy for resale” argument. If you can afford a Rolex, you aren’t buying it because you can sell it later. Sure, there is a resale market for Rolexes, but that is just a benefit that comes along with this luxury, and quite expensive watch. The fact is, Rolexes are beautiful, and are made with excellent materials including precious metals. You buy A Rolex because you made it and you deserve the best in life. Whew, nuff said. Thanks for posting your video. Well done. Mark

I wouldn’t necessarily call their movements “In house.” Aegler made their movements until 2004 when all they did was just buy their movement supplier. If you look at Omega or Grand Seiko, you get FULL in house movements and cases.

1. go to a Rolex dealer 2. TRY to buy the Submariner you saw in the window 3. Find out that there is a waitinglist for at least an year. 4. Listen carefull to the seller who tells you, thats it impossible to get on the waitinglist. 5. Find out that is impossible to buy this mass produced (8000 pieces a day) watch. 6. Buy a watch that will not impress others, but only yourself.

Great article! I own a 1998 Rolex Daytona stainless with white face and a 2016 Zenith El Primero Stratus Flyback, both purchased new. I wish the author had revealed the fact that Zenith made the movements for Rolex watches until approximately 20 years ago. If you look around the internet, you will see older Daytona's advertised as Rolex Zenith Daytona's. I paid $2550.00 for the Daytona and purchased it from the Elmendorf AFB exchange in Anchorage, Alaska. One could be purchased for $5500.00 new at Rolex stores at that time. In 2016 I purchased the Zenith for $3300.00 on the internet from Ashford and it is authentic. The Zenith has the date, the Daytona does not. The My Daytona is now worth somewhere around $20,000.00, it is still like new and I have all the papers and box. The Zenith is probably worth $5500.00, also still like new. The Zenith in my humble opinion is just as good as the Rolex and just as beautiful and with the exception of the date, the mechanics are identical.. The Zenith face looks very much like the Daytona, except I have the blue face and bezel on the Zenith. Both are stainless steel watches with stainless bands. Last time I checked, you can purchase a new Daytona now for around $12000.00, but you will have to wait at least 18 months to receive it. I waited 18 months for mine. If you want it NOW, you will have to pay around $25 K for one. Rolex has deliberately been slow to deliver their watches to keep the value high and it is working. Old Rolex watches are truly a good investment. You may want to consider a Zenith if you want to wear it every day, you can get it NOW for a very reasonable price, but the collector value will not keep up with the Rolex. Here is a look at the Zenith watch:kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKvci5J3drh5l7c

I really dislike rolex for the exact reasons most people like it. It feels like owning a rolex is just jumping on a bandwagon instead of showing that you are actually knowledgeable about watches. IMO going with something of the same quality, but a bit less mainstream would make a much better impression. This was a great video still, and don't let anyone convince you not to buy a rolex if you really like the style. I prefer a more elegant, thin style of watch with a leather bracelet and this is not an area where rolex excels.

Rolexs are great, but their “high end” watches are gaudy to the point of crassness. I’ve been looking at them lately, and am really only interested in the “lower end” ones because they’re less ostentatious. I honestly prefer some lesser known watches like Baume & Mercier, Breitling, Omega, etc.
